Instrumental isn't quite right. Its a yell of pain.

In the Silmarillion, after Morgoth outright claims the Silmarils as his despite promising Ungoliant he'd feed her everything, she attacks him, having grown huge from the treasure she's consumed. He yells in pain and fear, and his Balrogs come to his aid and drive Ungoliant from him. The area in which this occurred was named Lammoth for his yell.
