She was uneasy and awkward on the stage at times and yet she was magnificent. I felt like I knew her for the a beautiful, complex human being that she is. The poetic bitterness and nostalgia in the lyrics and the music makes me think that she is the person that wishes that she was thanked for doing something she has done for someone else. At the same time she recognizes her own vanity and weakness for expecting the praise that she never got. I know that it's possible that other people do selfless acts of kindness and generosity but it's so rare. There are very few people capable of the kindness like Natalie is so I think she is talking about herself in a self-deprecating way. Not realizing that she exposing the beauty and the vulnerability of her own being. It's possible that I'm just projecting. This is the first chance I had to truly read the words and get their meaning and her message to Gary. He has been there through thick and thin for her, marrying into our family when my daughter was 15 1/2 and I was undergoing breast cancer treatments and a subsequent mastectomy. He kept our family together, guided her and her brother when they launched into the world after high school and college graduation and still helps them every step of the way in their young lives. This song was perfect for the message she chose to send to Gary - he will cry when I give him the printed lyrics this evening as he did when he was surprised by the special dance she requested at the wedding reception. Gary is truly KIND and GENEROUS and has been the backbone for our little family for nearly 12 years!
