Kind and Generous Lyrics - Natalie Merchant

Review The Song (16)

na na na na na na na na na na na na na na.................

You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
For your selflessness, my admiration
For everything you've done, you know I'm bound, I'm bound to
thank you for it....

na na na na na na na na na na na na na na ...........................

You've been so kind and generous, I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
And I never could have come this far without you
For everything you've done, you know I'm bound, I'm bound to
thank you for it....

Na Na na na na na na na na na
na na na na na na na na na na

Oh, I want to thank you for so many gifts you gave with love and tenderness,

The Perfect Lyrics | Reviewer: Patty | 12/27/13

Through the years I have always thought this was a sweet song with nice rhythm. The Lyrics became so much more powerful to me soon after my husband of 24 years passed away. I started a hobby of performing covers vocal and guitar. When I sing this song it is with such passion. I do 2 rounds of "thank you for so many gifts........", as Natalie does. The first round I feel as though I am singing to my friends who helped me through one of the toughest times, and the 2nd round I belt out harder because this round is for my husband. Thank you Natalie for such a beautiful song.

For my partner who recently gave birth | Reviewer: DISA | 11/18/10

My partner and I have been together for 10 years and we have just had a baby. So? Well it took us 2 years of fertility treatment including trips to the clinic, drugs, counselling, a ridiculous amount of money and lots of tears after 10 failed attempts. We split up for a while and shut ourselves away from each other and the world. We were heartbroken. But thankfully the 11th attempt worked and we now have a beautiful baby girl. The birth was amazing and our daughter is so special - the three of us are very happy and I have my partner to thank for this wonderful family life we now enjoy. I have posted this song on my partner's facebook page because the words are for her.

God Bless America | Reviewer: Dsang1 | 10/22/09

I have been struggling with the knowledge of what is going on in this country. I pray each night that God will bless the American people... then by chance I end up here and read the very beautiful "posts" about very giving beautiful people who give of themselves, so.. there is hope, people are good and giving and yes the world will go on... for now..
Thanks to all for sharing your stories. I too have a story but choose to just say what is in my heart at this very moment - gratitude for all the kind and loving people here on earth.

The perfect song.. | Reviewer: Rachael | 3/2/09

I have been looking for a song for my father daughter dance, and this one is perfect. He is my step dad, but I have called him dad for 14 years now. He has been there for me, kind and generous and honest. Also, it is perfect because it is not too sappy, and that fits our relationship better than the typical "daddy daughter" song.

Mom's 70th Birthday -Surprise Party | Reviewer: Karen | 9/28/08

Yesterday, we had a surprise party for my Mom's 70th birthday. My brothers, sisters, neices, nephews, son, all sang this song to her as a dedication to her --and her inspriring ability to care, love and celebrate all of her family in a way that has so enriched our lives and sense of being. She has 9 children, 22 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. She and my dad have always put each of their family members ahead of themselves. They are the best example of conscious living I have ever known. Thinking nothing of giving all they have to everyone they encounter. They sit comfortingly at bedsides while family and friends have passed, they open their home to us all, welcoming each of us with a bear hug and smile that light the room as we enter. Thank you, Natalie Merchant. It's as though you were speaking to my mother when you wrote your beautiful, gentle, "thank you" song. God bless.

I have a different take | Reviewer: Greg | 6/20/08

I saw Natalie at a concert at Wolftrap quite a few years back. She was uneasy and awkward on the stage at times and yet she was magnificent. I felt like I knew her for the a beautiful, complex human being that she is.

The poetic bitterness and nostalgia in the lyrics and the music makes me think that she is the person that wishes that she was thanked for doing something she has done for someone else. At the same time she recognizes her own vanity and weakness for expecting the praise that she never got.

I know that it's possible that other people do selfless acts of kindness and generosity but it's so rare. There are very few people capable of the kindness like Natalie is so I think she is talking about herself in a self-deprecating way. Not realizing that she exposing the beauty and the vulnerability of her own being.

It's possible that I'm just projecting.

For a very special lady..THANK YOU | Reviewer: Chris Broubalow | 2/28/08

I saw Natalie perform this tune in Bethlehem, PA a few years ago. Although I love Natalie, I was there to see Dylan. 7th row center and I walked out a few hours later with my mind completely blown.
I never thought I could ever get through the past few years in one piece. I did. I never thought I'd want to say what these words actually mean to anyone. My friend, Marisa. Words won't ever say enough...but this is damned close. THANK YOU!

A tribute to a beautiful being and to a magnificent artist... | Reviewer: Laurel | 1/15/08

I have known this song for quite some time. I have always loved it. Though I have never felt the intensity regarding expression of thanks. I do now.
These last few years have been a time of great difficulty, that's a bit of an understatement, 'sheer hell' maybe is a better phrase.
A very beautiful person came into my life. Maybe an 'angel on earth.' He saw me floundering, made a choice to help. I believe he literally saved my life.
The depth of feeling I have for his kindness knows no bounds. This song, says what is in my heart so beautifully, tears ran down my face...Thank you Natalie, and greatest of admiration, thanks and love to my dear friend. I don't know if he knows how significant his caring, his interest, how much an impact he has made... on me, my children, those I touch... thank you...

Kind and Generous | Reviewer: Deborah | 11/11/07

My daughter requested this song for the dance with my husband, her step-father, at her wedding reception two weeks ago. This is the first chance I had to truly read the words and get their meaning and her message to Gary. He has been there through thick and thin for her, marrying into our family when my daughter was 15 1/2 and I was undergoing breast cancer treatments and a subsequent mastectomy. He kept our family together, guided her and her brother when they launched into the world after high school and college graduation and still helps them every step of the way in their young lives. This song was perfect for the message she chose to send to Gary - he will cry when I give him the printed lyrics this evening as he did when he was surprised by the special dance she requested at the wedding reception. Gary is truly KIND and GENEROUS and has been the backbone for our little family for nearly 12 years! God bless him and all step-dads who choose to make a difference in the lives of those children who are not their own, and select to become true part of the lives of those families and those children! Deborah

Just a Beautiful Song and Sentiment | Reviewer: Tim | 9/28/07

I heard this song last week on internet radio while I was working. It captivated me. I downloaded it off of I-tunes. A day later my grandmother went into hospice and died a few days later. This song has been playing in my head and heart and on my computer ever since. We should try to say the things in this song to the people we love and cherish while they are still with us.

Thank you, Natalie Merchant, for this enchanting song | Reviewer: Kelly Arbor | 6/1/07

I will never forget seeing Natalie Merchant perform this song years ago at the A&B Amphitheatre on Maui. A light tropical rain began, and the sideways wind blowing onto the stage had the grand piano getting a light sprinkle. Without missing a beat, she found a rag and danced around the piano, drying the instrument as she swayed her hips and sang.

Natalie, I want to thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, for the kindness and generosity of spirit you showed. And what a wonderful song - everytime I hear it I say my silent prayer of thanks to all the benefactors in my life.
