Think about what the phrase "keep the car running" usually refers to -- a getaway car. It doesn't have to be as morbid as you all seem to make it. It's just about getting away, being free, etc. Yes, that could mean suicide, but the rhythm and melody, despite some of the sadder lyrics, is more hopeful and longing than depressed. One has to examine all elements of a song rather than just the lyrics. In such a work, it would be erroneous to assume that the opinions of the character necessarily are shared by the author. While the specific meaning of "Keep the Car Running" is open for debate, to me it appears to be a song sung by a tinfoil-hatted conspiracy theorist who, in his mind, has given his name to the aliens who are going to show up at any minute and take him to the other side; an event he's been dreaming of his whole life. I could see how someone who was insistent on interpreting things in religious terms would read this song as being similarly told from the perspective of someone awaiting the Rapture (or some other cataclysmic spiritual event), but I think the language chosen ("they" know my name, etc.) and the image of the car idling in the driveway ready to take him to the rendezvous site more clearly refers to imagery from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" than the Bible.
