I totally agree with Casbahdude in that this is the most erotic song of all. This did untold things to me as a 15 year old when it came out on the extraordinary 'Kick Inside' album. The whole album seems sensuous . I am not as eloquent as the previous reviewer, but this song really illustrated what wonderful humans women can be, it created such a vivid picture to a lad flying through his most hormonal stage!

So many songs could be called Kate's best, and this is surely one of them. A perfect haunting melody, atmosphere and lyrics. Based on 'The Innocents', which itself is based on 'The Turn of the Screw' which is about a governess who thinks ghosts are possessing the two children in her care. In the film the boy, Miles, is seemingly under the influence of the dead former gardner (I think he was a gardener?) and acts way more mature than he actually is, including giving his governess a goodnight kiss that lasts about 5 seconds! Just background for anyone who didn't know

I remember hearing this the first time and loved it. There is a version of it by Hayley Westenra, which I have and is also good and it brought me back to the original Kate Bush version. Wish we could have more music like this these days.

I first heard Wuthering Heights peformed by Kate Bush in 1993 in a taxi in Montevideo, Uruguay. It really stuck to my mind. However I did not know neither the artist or the lyrics. Some 15 years later, when discussing music with a friend, I mentioned this song. I could remember the melody of the chorus and that the voice was a very fragile female - some Chinese sound. From this description my friend was able to find the LP and let me hear this awesome song again. Since then, I've been listening to it quite often.

For as far as I can interprete the lyrics ( as Dutchman ) this song is about
the loss of an unborn child. I don't have the experience of a miscarrage but
I do know what losing a child is. When our daughter was about 7 I got
divorced and now ( 2012 ) my daughter is 19 and I haven't seen her for years.
I wish everyone with deep grief about missing a child all the comfort they
need.

This is a beautiful and sad song and tear provoking. Kate Bush has the uncanny ability to touch the passion and pain and romance we all feel in our lives from time to time. If I ever have to be reborn I hope I hear her voice next to my cradle. Whenever the pain from this life overwhelms me I listen to her and am reminded there is real beauty in living and in the soul. IMHO Kate Bush is quite simply the loveliest creature to ever exist...a real angel brought to life at God's whim. Perfections and beauty made flesh! She has been here forever. Can you feel it?

I'm glad to see these interpretations of this song, things I'd never thought of.

I'd always interpreted the chorus as her watching him leave her, walking down the hill, and if she could swap places she'd run back to him (to herself). she's in the building from the lyrics, looking at him.

I saw the "hurt" as her pain at his leaving her.

If I am right, when she asks "do you want to know" she's telling him that he shouldn't assume she's ok, even though that's what she's been pretending. also she is saying he should WANT to know, as when she asks about seeing how deep the bullet lies.

I thought "exchanging the experience" was asking to him to consider her position, watching him leave, and to swap would be to wonder if he'd then realize he should return, up the hill.

After seeing these poignant reflections, I agree that there is probably a sexual overtone & double meaning to many of the lyrics.

I can see the frustrated actor over the arm of a casting couch with his big dreams going nowhere.
