It went so well for you
With a place right where you wanted and the ones to fill it to
But some blows break the spell
That it hits you every day until you need to hit as well
It's just a shadow of the man you should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
You have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell
It all seemed fine for you
Till the struggle of ambition turned in violence upon you
Sometimes a landslide comes
If you're hiding in that avalanche you need a place to run
It's just a shadow of the woman you should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
And you have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell
I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there's never been a hand
Did we ever have it good
While we lived in Eldorado did we find the gold we should
If it really was the truth
Why are faces filled with anger that should only shine with youth
It's just a shadow of the people we should be
Like a garden in the forest that the world will never see
You have no thought of answers only questions to be filled
And it feels like hell
I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there never is a hand outside that cares
Still the promise comes of living fit for all
If we only get our back against the wall
I look at backs that pushed the wall for years
Scarred by many knives and too much fear

Review about Just a Shadow Bloody Amazing Song! | Reviewer: aimurray | 11/15/2007
This song is Big Country at their absolute finest. It gives me chills to this day and is especially poignant considering Stuart Adamson's early and tragic death. You can really feel his pain in this song. I saw them in concert at their peak and they were unbelievable. WTF, why aren't there bands like Big Country anymore?

If you moved to a differente country and to a small towm in Alabama, you can really understand the lyrics of this song....when you fell depressed and the place and country is not what you thought it would be at all...and if you have ideals and a real heart... in the past you helped a lot o people but now you have to start from zero...and people look at you like you are nothing...
Sucker punch | Reviewer: lotusmaglite | 7/23/2007
No, that's not a pun; this song is a sucker punch. It's beauty and hushed tones belie the violence and horror the lyrics express. Only at the end does the band tip its' hand, crashing forward with explosive anger, expressing the rage such violence should inspire in all of us. Simply brilliant.
While The Crossing was an amazing album, and many feel The Seer was Big Country's peak, I always felt Steeltown was their best effort, largely due to songs like this one.
