Kenny Rogers Just Dropped In Lyrics

Last updated: 06/08/2012 11:00:00 AM

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)

I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag, but then...
I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)

Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a dead end sign
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
Yeah yeah oh-yeah

Someone should include the writer's name...Mickey Newbury who does a good acoustic version of the song. That the song was there for him was Mr. Rogers' good fortune. He did do it justice.

Video | Reviewer: Jim | 8/16/11

There was a proto-MTV video for this song at the time of the First Edition members sledgehammering a car under a highway overpass. I think they showed it on Smothers Brothers or some show like that at the time. The girl in 1st Edition had short dark hair. Kinda hot!

Turning point | Reviewer: Treebrother | 5/22/11

It wasn't long after the 1st edition hit the streets that Kenny "found a home in country music". We felt a little sold out, as this was during the days of Kent State and the invasion of Cambodia. I feel that Mr. Rogers' career in Country has been a bit closer to his true self than hanging out in psychedelia. He has produced quality product in his current incarnation, but at the time, it was like Malcom X singing "White Christmas".

Someone made a boo boo when they transcribed these lyrics on one line (My favorite line in the song) you said Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "dinged-in" sign. ain't no dinged-in sign, LOL the lyrics are actually Someone painted "april fool" in big black letters on a "dead end" sign.

Similar songs question. | Reviewer: Snaptick | 11/16/09

I have always loved this song, since before "The Big Lebowski" - honestly, I had no idea it was Kenny Rogers - I thought it was a little more contemporary - every time I heard it, I would somehow miss the radio intro, or maybe I just didn't want to believe it was Kenny. Now that I know, I have a whole new respect for the man :)
For a similar sounding song, I would suggest Jace Everett - Bad Things (which is also the theme for the TV show, True Blood.)

Killer Song | Reviewer: Smokey B. | 11/5/07

This has to be one of the best songs ever.

Jerry Lee Lewis did a version in 1966/67 that is totally Killer, in all senses of the word. It blows Kenny away, I think, but it's out of print, as far as I know... (I'm listening to it now! :) )

I've known about this song for a long time and knew that Kenny did it. My question is do you know other artists that have done this song. It's really a great song with killer lyrics. Thanks Garbear.

Driver 2 | Reviewer: Renton | 5/5/07

I found this song on Driver 2 in the year 1999, and I thought "This song really goes good with Driver 2" It's a great song! And can someone tell me when this song was made? By the static and buzzing; I'm guessing late 60's?
