The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on
September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, TX to Clem and Mildred
Mathis. As a small boy, the family moved to Post Street in
San Francisco. It was there that he learned an appreciation
of music from his father who taught him his first song, “My
Blue Heaven”. At age eight, his father purchased an old
upright piano for $25. When he brought it home, it wouldn’t
fit through the front door. So that evening, Johnny stayed
up all night to watch his father dismantle the piano, get
it into the small living room of their basement apartment
and then reassemble it. Clem Mathis, who worked briefly as
a musician back in Texas playing the piano and singing on
stage, would continue to teach his son many songs and
routines. Johnny had More...

------ About artist/band Johnny Mathis
The year was 1957. I was 12........Listening to the radio one day, I heard Wonderful, Wonderful...I had never heard a voice like that before. I was hooked on Johnny Mathis immediately. I went out that day and bought that record. I've never stopped. "Mathis Magic" is real. His voice still thrills me and whenever I've gone to his concerts and spoken to other fans they all agree with me when I say there is NO ONE who can sing a song the way he does. His phrasing, his microphone skills - he's is a master.... a rare talent and a man who is very humble.

------ About the song Chances Are performed by Johnny Mathis
These are the greatest lyrics ever. Very clever word play, "the chances are your chances are". From a poetic perspective, it is filled with internal rhyme and the end rhymes seem to re-appear out of nowhere. Listen to it with the lyrics in front of you. Genius. And beautifully sung by a master. (now compare to the worst lyrics of all time... Sixteen Tons)

------ About artist/band Johnny Mathis
I was fortunate to have seen Johnny Mathis years ago in concert. I still listen to his music and know what a great singer he still is. He has the fine dignified appearance that I admire in him as a performer. True Class. He will always be #1 in my eyes.
Happy Birthday Johnny.
Hi. It's Kathie. My Father was an avid fan and listener to Johnny's music. An accomplished pianist, my Dad played certain records including Johnny's every evening at home when he wasn't playing the piano for my Mom and my sister and I. He had a very descriminating selection, including Nat King Cole. He played many of the numbers we listened to for me to sing. I know them still by heart. I have Johnny's Greatest hits now and am listening to him tonight as I do my needle work. My dogs are lulled to sleep by his beautiful voice. We thank Mr. Mathis for his wonderful music. We have often wondered if he ever married or had children. Such beautiful love songs shouldn't have gone without a special girl. My birthday is Sept.19,46 so I've been a long time fan. God Bless him and many more years of good health and happiness to him. Best Wishes
Kathie

------ About the song The Twelfth of Never performed by Johnny Mathis
Never will there be a Love Song that tells the 1 You Love that you will be there into eternity with them with Your Love ... and Johnny Mathis has done this for many years. I first heard Johnny When I was Younger and My Brother said ..'Listen to the Words .. learn from the ... Then you Find Love to Fill the Song' ... I Finally Have.... Thank You for such Beauty. This song is so beautiful. It seems that it does not matter how many times it is played in the movie "Same Time, Next Year", I love hearing Johnny Mathis and Jane Olivor sing. Truly a beautiful love song for all ages.
All these kinds of songs predated my time but I am not fervently listening to the 50's - and Johnny Mathis is a god-man who was born to sing. God bless this angel of voice who is an icon and a deliver or soul and feeling. Have you listened to his other songs - Someone, Small World, Misty, Too much too little too late with the divine Ms. Neicy - a sheer taste of heaven.
But I've grown to appreciate songs like this that predated the modern age of Rock and Pop. This song reminds me of a simpler time, the music reflecting the times of my Mom and Dad's era, and there's a sadness that it and they are gone, and I find myself able to gauge the range from that time, through my coming of age in the late 60s, and the 70s, through to present day, and I have to pity those that think they are living in the hippest of times in the present, with a lot of the garbage that passes for music. For them, these are the only times that matter. That is, until they get well into their middle age. It's frightening to think of what will pass for music then.
Johnny Mathis will always be the greatest!!!
We share the same birthday September 30 and I have 4 minutes left to wish him Happy Birthday!!
I have every recording he ever made and cherish each one of them. I miss the fan clubs but still stay in touch with my "Mathis friends"
Keep spoiling us, John. Thank you

------ About the song Chances Are performed by Johnny Mathis
How old one has to be to feel and say these words? 16? 61? 81? It doesn't matter at all! At 64 now, it sounds as delicate and touches the same chord as when I was 46 or 24. The greatest artist is the one who catches in rhymes the best we all have inside: we are all full of stars, it´s just a matter of learning to see them in someone else's eyes - and in our mirrors as well!

------ About the song Misty performed by Johnny Mathis
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Nobody could sing it like Mathis did. I am one of the few males around not afraid to admit how good Johnny Mathis is. Its sort of a macho thing to just denounce him out of hand.
He has one of the most beautiful singing voices there is.
..i love this song the first time i heard it.. i have never fallen in love that time yet... now... i can relate... even with the movie.. Same time next year... Truly, my ultimate love song.

------ About the song Misty performed by Johnny Mathis
this is a libretto that fits the song, the melody.
it doesn't fit easily into it's musical straightjacket but there is enough room to allow interpretation to fit the bill.
this is one of the best songs i've ever heard! when i first heard this... it reminded that love can be sweet and painful atb the same time... but falling inlove is such a natural thing... lucky are the one's who find their match...
everytime i heard this song i feel like falling inlove all over again....i first heard it from the movie "same time next year" for me this the greatest love song ive ever heard in my entire life...
