When he was young you'd not find him doing well in school,
His mind would turn unto the waters.
Always the focus of adolescent ridicule,
He has no time for farmer's daughters.
Alienated from the clique society,
A lonely boy finds peace in fishing.
His mother says "John this is not the way life's supposed to be."
"Don't you see the life that you are missing?"
And he says...
When I grow up I want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.
Now years gone by we find man who rules the sea.
He sets out on a dark May morning .
To bring his catch back to this small community.
He doesn't see the danger dawning.
Four hours up, oh the ocean swelled and swelled,
The fog rolled in it started raining.
"The starboard bow." "Oh my gosh we're going down!"
They do not hear his frantic mayday.
And he says
When I grow up I want to be,
one of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.
"I'll live and die a fisherman."
Calling John the Fisherman.

Wow! I really have fun with this one on Guitar Hero but I never really payed much attention to the lyrics after the first chorus. Until now. It's like a short-form "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" or "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner". Very cool story.
primus, as you can probably tell, take their music much, much, much more seriously than their lyrics. Still, this is a great song. One of my favorites.
A really sharp bouncy and surreal song. I love the homage to Rush's YYZ at the start of the song on the Suck On This live album. Just a generally fun song.

I love this song so much. I've always wanted to be a marine biologist when I grow up because I love the ocean and sea. This song really has a big inpact on me. I always think that if I die doing what I love to do, then I'll die in the ocean's waters.
I absolutly ador going fishing and I thank you Primus fo coming up with this song. It's also great on "Guitar Hero II".

What does this song mean? It's about a kid who chooses not to follow the norm. Instead, he finds interest and comfort in the skills of fishing, something unusual and different. With a dream of being a professional fisher, John becomes one, a lonely fisherman who is eventually eaten up by the thing he loved most, the sea.
Written in his younger years, Les Claypool's typical redneck, tweeked out perception of reality delivers a dull, yet a metaphorically clear message on life. With his insane popping bass and the abstract whines of his bandmates guitar, musically this song is a powerful and aggresive, catchy tune. Inovative and creative, towards the dynamic of Primus, this song is one of my favorites of theirs.
Though the music and the lyrics are both very bold, I feel the intensity and surrealness of their music distracts the listener from the actual words of the lyrics. However, for intent listeners and Primus fans, the lyrics of the song, once heard and understood, personify the music and the perception of Primus as a band.
