John the Revelator
Put him in an elevator
Take him up to the highest high
Take him up to the top where the mountains stop
Let him tell his book of lies

John the Revelator
He's a smooth operator
It's time we cut him down to size
Take him by the hand
And put him on the stand
Let us hear his alibis

By claiming God - As his holy right
He's stealing a God from the Israelites
Stealing a God from a Muslim, too
There is only one God through and through
Seven lies, multiplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who's that shouting?
John the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who's that shouting?
John the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame

stealing a god from the israelites stealing a god from the muslims too means his not respecting the god of the muslims and of the jews.so the god of them has no worth anway that means stealing a god.hes destroying the way of living so the religion.so their god.easily he stole the god because he showed em the war

    I dont get it | Reviewer: Juan | 8/23/2008

First let me start of by stating the obvious. This is a awesome song by an awesome group. I am also a spiritual person, as I think Martin Gore is (just listen to the stuff written during the Ultra/Exciter periods as well as Songs of Faith and Devotion.) Having a belief in a Creator doesn't mean I have to listen to bland, regurgitated "christian" pop crap. The song isn't meant to insult God or his believers, but rather those that use peoples spiritual inclinations for their own advantage. If Martin Gore believes that the author of Revelations was full of it, that's his opinion, just like the song Blasphemous Rumours was his opinion/artistic expression. I love that DM can take christian themes and give them a new twist (Breath,Personal Jesus, the Love Thieves etc.,) or modern take on them. I believe that their music speaks more about the human condition rather than anything too specific. Spirituality and the conflicts that arise because of it. The battle between mind and flesh. The treachery of the heart. Love and Hate. I'm just happy that there are even artists/musicians who are keen about these things and are willing to write about them. Especially when they are as good as this band. So much stuff out there today is just pure, mindless drivel, THAT'S what people should really be offended by.

    here's an answer | Reviewer: martin coetzee | 6/21/2008

i read one comment below stating that this song is slightly blasphemous. the song isn't a denounciation of religion. its broad based. perhaps targeting individuals with holier than thou attitudes. and perhaps criticising (an obviously christian) john for claiming god as his. a lot of war is fueled by religion (although we don't always like to admit it, everything is divided by race or religion) this song might be encouragement to break down that system.

to say "JOHN IS BUSH" is ignorant. this song isn't a political outburst, its an observation.

    i'm more frank than gore.

why can't popular musicians make music that might be blasphemous to you if it isn't blasphemous to them?
at every turn you condemn muslims, gays, jews and pro-choice people. if i were a gay muslim with an aborted foetus i wouldn't give a flying fuck if i offended you because all those things are endemic and RIGHT to me.

"freedom of speech and expression is awesome, as long as it doesn't criticize my extravagant christian lifestyle."

the same can be said of sunni muslims.

this whole world is fucked up. there's something more important than god you know. its called humanity.

    awsome song.

LET ME Explain. | Reviewer: Benediction | 3/8/2008

John is the chosen but a revelator which means Bush. "By claiming God - As his holy right (AMERICA-UNDER GOD)
He's stealing a God from the Israelites
Stealing a God from a Muslim, too
There is only "one" God through and through." Written in the bible for every war. GOD needs to be present. BUSH cheated and cause terror instead of war. STILL UNDER the DOCTRINE OF GOD for WAR but never broke the contract however, GOD HUMORS his modesty to cheat. HOW else did he still GODS from all and still come up with only ONE GOD of all. btw, it's written into two forms of doctrine christianity and catholic to help explain HOW this is possible. I surpassed the phrophecies written into ONE whole BOOK of aka "Depeche MODE" of our current bible one name said will be the stonekey of the greatest phrophet ever to leave beyond discoveries. Contact via email to unravel top secrets of the true almighty phrophet- almighty lord soveriegnty - I before JESUS CHRIST and then... unto him. FOOLISH everybody has something to abide against he who believeth most.

    haha | Reviewer: Julia | 1/4/2008

Noup this song is not about Bush. At least it wasn`t meant to be written about him. Gore doesn`t write about politics, religions and stuff. =) People don`t take it so seriously

    satanic inspiration! | Reviewer: luc | 1/3/2008

since the song is as nice as dark and as it is speaking of someone bringing only pain wich can be described as pessimistic words!!! so i say for me then he speaks about something against religions etc and seven trompets... apocalypse or things like that! someone against religion which is oftenly called the devil or : SATAN! the word satan is not used, yes, and the lyrics can be also related to st john... the lyrics stay lyrical in a hard way when he shout john the revelator that it can be easily taken by the side when you hear a song aggressive and dark lyrics... with some kind of a satanic inspiration!!! ah ah!
well, the review of such lyrics is easily complex as often with such poetry they are used to sing, since now a very long time! for example shake the disease is one of my favorite, another way to play with words... written about 1985!

    give me a break. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/28/2007

"The song is about George Bush and how he has hijacked Christianity to validate his war. If anything, it should make you aware of false prophets that claim they are on a mission from God to carry out his will. George's association of friends and actions and lies prove otherwise."

You're the dumbest fucking person on the planet if you seriously believe this. And so is Depeche Mode. Bush's religion has nothing to do with Iraq.

    Get off the fucking internet.

Blasphemy is in the ear of the hearer | Reviewer: notled | 10/24/2007

    Love this song!

Apparently, it was inspired by a traditional gospel song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Revelator_%28song%29

Because only true Christians(and those who have not reached an age of accountability) will be "gathered to Christ", John's writings condemn non-Christians to suffer the Tribulation and aftermath. This could explain the "By claiming God as his holy right..." line.
Of course, the "End of Days" writings of the Judaism and Islam also elevate themselves, while condemning the others. That is one of my problems with organized religions.

??? what are you people going off about, exactly? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/13/2007

Look, I am an atheist, but it does seem to me that if you are a religious person, then your religion would have kept you from listening to depeche mode a long time ago. They aren't exactly Christian pop.
