------ About the song Perhaps Love performed by John Denver

i was at a loss when the father of my daughter left of another woman. though I knew he was a hopeless case, preferring playing computer games to coming home and playing with our daughter, nonetheless i waited for him to grew up..all the waiting, and finally the painful betrayal, made me question if there is indeed love..i came upon this song and made me realize that love is letting go of the father of my daughter and holding on to my dear daughter. thanks to john denver for making me finally sever all the ties with the person i thought will be my husband and forever love.

THE SAD SIDE OF ALCOHOL | Reviewer: Bart Eben
------ About the song Matthew performed by John Denver

i HAVE KNOWN MANY "BRILLIENT ALCOHOLICS IN MY LIFE, AND SEEN THEIR LIVES DESTROYED BY THIS DRUG.IT WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE LIFE AND DIVORCE OF THIS BRILLIENT MAN,I AM NOT MAKING EXCUSES FOR HIS DRINKING,(HE WAS AN ALCOHOLIC) AND THEY SAY AND DO MANY THINGS THEY WOULD NEVER SAY WHEN SOBER. HAVING LIVED WITH AN ALCOHOLIC,I WOULD BET HE WAS DRUNK WHEN THE ABUSE HAPPENED THAT'S JUST THE WAY THEY ARE.
JOHN DENVER HAD THE CLEAREST VOICE I HAVE EVER HEARD, WHICH LENDS ITSELF PERFECTLY TO BALADS, YOU NEVER HAVE TO GUESS WHAT HE IS SINGING ABOUT!HIS UN-TIMELY DEATH WAS A HARD THING FOR ME TO GET OVER, HE HAD A LOVE FOR THIS EARTH AS I HAVE--AND HE WAS NOT AFRAID TO SING ABOUT HOW HE FELT ABOUT THIS LOVE ,AND THE WILDLIFE WE SHARE THIS PLANET WITH- - AND THAT'S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HIS MUSIC. IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD "JOHN DENVERS WILDLIFE CONCERT", YOU NEED TO BUY IT, IT IS FANTASTIC !(DVD)

A true environmentalist | Reviewer: kjc
------ About the song Rocky Mountain High performed by John Denver

JD lyrics and music helped me through some tough times as a young man and an up and coming member of the environmental movement. John's songs and personal work did a great deal to the movement.

Memories of Alistair 1936-1985 | Reviewer: Jean McGilp
------ About the song Perhaps Love performed by John Denver

My husband,Alistair, died in my arms of a massive heart attack,
after only 4 years of marriage, in 1985. This sensitive song gave
me great comfort even then and still does, all these years later.
Its beautiful lyrics are memorable...especially "My memories of
love will be of you". Thank you, John Denver.

John calls it a Love Song but this one breaks my heart for him & anyone who has a lost love in their memory | Reviewer: patti
------ About the song Thought of You performed by John Denver

I have been a JD fan for so long that I can't remember my brain without his music. I first met him and heard him sing at a benefit concert he did at the U of MN in the fall of 1967 or 68. I find all of his songs filled with such true, deep feelings and caring and when I am asked to pick a favorite*, it is impossible. However, in all of the 30 years that I have been listening, buying his albums and seeing him in concerts every year for these past 30 years, I have never heard this song. Since I saw him singing it on YouTube for the first time, just 2 weeks ago, I have not been able to get it out of my heart/mind. The lyrics are filled with pain and longing and the melody is somehow beautiful and pitch perfect, despite the sadness(I am NOT a musician in any sense of the word because I think 'pitch perfect' has to do with the singer but am unable to really truly describe this song)- you will have to hear it yourself - actually SEEING him perform it, is the right way to 'hear' it. IF I am pushed to describe this song further, what I would tell you is that it is dark yet filled with hope?, is mysterious, even though he tells us the real story and overall is hauntingly beautiful. I thought 'Perhaps Love' was incredibly deep and filled with WONDER in his trying to describe what few can -- LOVE, but this one is MORE so. As I watched, I was mesmerized, then shocked to think I hadn't heard it before. I pulled out all of my 70+ CDs & DVDs looking for it. Not on one of them. I came back to 'You Tube' and listened to it until I lost track. I cried for a long time. I have NEVER been as touched by any song, as deeply. The ONE thing I do know is that it could ONLY HAVE BEEN SUNG BY JOHN because he EXPERIENCED THE EVENT and I know of no one else who can translate anything from real life into music the way John Denver can and take us with him. When I realized the meaning of the song, it was even worse. My heart was literally breaking for him. The intensity of his feelings in this song are so 'OUT THERE'. I will never be able to understand how someone could put such feelings into such beautiful words that are so SAD and still be able to sing it for an audience. It is truly a song for lost lovers(BUT I would not recommend any one whose heart is breaking listen to this until you are SO over her/him). John Denver, as he titled his song written for his youngest daughter Jesse Belle,'The Gift You Are' was just that -- a GIFT TO US and one that can never be replaced. I KNOW he was far from perfect as he so willingly and openly, laying bare ALL of his faults and missteps, tells us in his autobiography 'Take Me Home' but he was able to take all of his imperfections and wrongs AND RIGHTS, into songs that moved and changed so many people in a MAGICAL WAY. IN LONG, simply because this review of ONE song is certainly not short, if you want to understand John Denver and how deeply and passionately he felt about everyone and everything he loved and cared for -- from Annie and his family to the rest of the world - all of his friends .... from the tiniest softest newborn duckling to the soaring wondrous spectacular Rocky Mountains that he so LOVED, he cared ... and shared and LOVED ALL OF IT. IF NOTHING ELSE HE MADE US MORE AWARE NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT HURT, even if he had to share his broken heart with the world as he did. HE IS IRREPLACEABLE AND I, for one, will never forget him, his music, and his love of ALL that makes up our Universe, and I will miss him for the rest of my life. It is a Love Song but one that will break your heart. *ps I think 'For Baby, For Bobbi' IS MY FAVORITE JD SONG -- it was written so long ago, before all the hurts and sarcasm and the FAME and fortune, and in its simplicity and sweetness says EVERYTHING - 'I'll walk in the rain by your side, I'll cling to the warmth of your tiny hand, I'll do anything to help you understand, I'll love you MORE then ANYBODY CAN ... and the WIND WILL WHISPER YOUR NAME TO ME...I'll sing you the song of the Rainbow, whisper all the dreams that are mine .... and Morning Bells will chime.' It is the
first song I softly sang to each of my 3 babies, the first time I put them to bed at HOME. I reached deep into my heart to silently sing it, every I was in bed at HOME waiting for them to get home safely as teens. IT IS DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE SONG - it has served me well for 48 years since I now sing it to my 4 Granddaughters - the youngest is just 10 months old.

Answer to question about uncle | Reviewer: Forestchild
------ About the song Matthew performed by John Denver

Everything Hometown Boy said is correct. John did write the song for his Uncle Dean, but the song isn't intended to be the literal truth about his uncle's life. It's a story song with the main character based on his uncle. In fact, as far as I know, none of the incidents in the song happened to John's uncle, but I could be wrong there.
John tells all about his uncle in his autobiography and used to speak of Uncle Dean at his concerts when he sang the song.

As regards being abusive towards his wife he was never physically abusive, both of his wives have said this. There was some verbal abuse during his second marriage and a few episodes when he was drunk. No one's perfect.
