Review The Artist (5)

Joan Baez was born on January 9, 1941 in Staten Island, New York, the second of three daughters to Dr. Albert Baez, a physicist, and Joan Bridge Baez. Her mother was English-Scotish, the daughter of an Episcopalian Minister and a professor of drama who had migrated to the United States, and her father was of Mexican parentage, the son of a minister. Her father's activities as a physicist, researcher and UNESCO consultant took him to many parts of the country, and Joan's childhood was spent first in the small town of Clarence Center, New York, and then in Redlands, California. She developed both her social consciousness and her love for music at a relatively tender age. Picking up the ukulele, Baez made her performing debut at a high school talent show when she was 14, performing "Honey Love." There she began singing both for the high school choir and for herself, and learned to accompany herself on the guitar. When her father took a job at M.I.T. a few years later,the family moved to Boston, where for a short time she studied drama at Boston University. She enrolled at the university and soon began singing at the Boston coffee houses, colleges and later concert halls along the East Coast to increasingly large crowds. Then came her 1959 Newport Folk Festival debut. Baez signed with the then relatively small folk label, Vanguard, which first released her performances at the Newport Folk Festival, and then released her first album, Joan Baez, in 1960 and the rest, as they say, is history...
Her admirers transcend musical strata and national boundaries. Her growth as a musician and as a human being have proceeded hand in hand. Enrolling herself in the Civil Rights cause and the peace movement, a spokesman for non-violent resistance to and protest against immoral authority, she has refused to pay taxes that go to escalate the war in Vietnam, and has sung at almost every historic demonstration, and fosters a school for non-violent protest in California. |

a pure moment of happiness, a state of grace | Reviewer: monique B. | 7/26/07
Quimper, July 22nd 2007. It's raining hard. I spot
about 40 people waiting outside the gates,3 hours before the concert! I'm 55 years old, my best friend has brought her reluctant mother who can'twalk very well; she 's present because she doesn't want to be alone in her hotel room and her niece who has to work in Rennes could sell her her ticket. It would'd be nice to force her to forget about her dinner; I think it will be like last year, I'll be at the back and see nothing (I have 5 cds of joan Baez).Wrong! we were lucky enough to be in the middle on the right (maybe because the wind blew through the open canvas.We soon forgot the disconfort; when she appeared, everybody, two thousand people of all ages, stood up spontaneously and became very quiet when she started singing;It's not only her voice, but the choice of her beautiful songs; she makes us fell better than we really are, and convinced that all those who listen to her whether they are English, German, Spanish, Bretons, French, even American are quite decent people after all. So thank you, Grande Dame, and please come back!I am not very rich, a widow with a daughter who is a student,not very young but I don't mind, I love life as it is, my back aches a little because I sat crooked for more than an hour and never realised it, so absorbed was I in your beauty.Even my friend's difficult mother was under the charm and is looking for a cd with the songs you sang;
No one will ever sing this beautiful again | Reviewer: Steve A | 8/11/06
Many of the best songs ever written are by Joan, many of the best covers of other artists tunes are by Joan and many of the best moments of my life have been listening to...Joan. Is she the most beautiful woman with the most beautiful voice ever?. Guilty, your honor. Her music has a passion and a sweetness that reaches deep,deep inside and transforms you. And please don't read about the passionate life Joan lives or you will fall hopelessly in love .
Voice of an angel | Reviewer: Gaia das | 7/24/06
This woman has the voice of an angel, the courage of a lion, and the heart of a goddess. I remember you, dearest, after all these years since we met in the back room at Longshoreman's Hall ... and think of you, and your sweet mom, just about everyday.
she is best | Reviewer: mohammad | 2/15/06
