Consider this a letter that I never sent
However inconsiderate it seems
Do you still consider me,
consider me the boy you laughed with
or that you learned to live without?... I suck,
I know I'm late,
I know you waited
You wouldn't get me on the phone
And you couldn't make me not alone
My phone bills stacked up by my bedside,
with your picture, you're looking surprised
You're what makes New England so great
My island nights are all spent dying
Wait for summer to become wrought with lips,
my wishful thinking
You wouldn't get me on the phone
And you couldn't make me not alone
(Yeah you wouldn't get me)
Yeah you're a blue eyed lightning bolt
(You wouldn't get me)
I'm a national phenomenon
(You wouldn't get me on the phone)
Nothing's absolutely definite till it's absolutely, definitely gone (definitely gone)
I never thought this day would end (never thought this day would end)
I never thought tonight could ever be this close to me (close to me)
So let my hands stray past that boundaries of your back
to get you breathing (get you breathing)
And get this started (get this started)
You wouldn't get me, you wouldn't get me
You wouldn't get me on the phone
(Yeah, you wouldn't get me)
Yeah you're a blue eyed lightning bolt
(You wouldn't get me)
I'm a national phenomenon
(You couldn't make me not alone)
Nothing's absolutely definite till it's gone

Review about Logan To Government Center Boston! | Reviewer: Anonymoose | 8/22/09
I'm from Boston, so this song is almost like my theme. I never really thought of the meaning, I just swooned over the title and, "You're what makes New England so great".
Also, I've noticed that a lot of bands make references to Massachusetts that aren't from here. DCFC has a song called "Lowell MA", Get Up Kids have "Mass Pike"...I'm from here, so I don't know what's so great about it. I certainly wouldn't write a song about Mass.

You guys know the actual lyrics to most all brand new songs are on their website, right? That way you know it's the correct stuff. Just go to fightoffyourdemons.com, and click on the girl's head. The albums pop up, and you can then look for the song you're looking for.
They have a few things a little different there with some songs.
On their site, they have the last line being "You could have made me not alone."
(Of course, the whole song is organized differently, which is kinda annoying.)
I guess this is a play-on, on how he says "You couldn't make me, not alone" for the chorus, into forming a sentence that sounds almost exactly like it, but with an entirely different meaning (perhaps), which I see as meaning something along the lines of, 'you could have made me not single'. So, basically, he wishes they'd get back together (which is pretty obvious with the other lines in the song anyways).

yes the cure lyrics are in this song, that should not be the main focus though. the whole song, every line, every chord is amazing. brand new comes from a place we all know, but knew better back in the day. it's being young and wild and in love. yes brand new is love, and some angst too lol. one of the best songs from my favorite band!
blue line inbound | Reviewer: kp | 6/10/09
i've been a brand new fan for quite a long time, back when i was in grade school. i'm now a college student in boston and i didn't really get the title until my freshman year of college. Logan Airport to Government Center station on the blue line! but i always thought brand new was from LI. did jesse just happen to ride the T while he was writing this??
This song makes me think of the best day me and her shared. I dont know i mean i gues this isnt much but this is probably one of my fav songs from these guys
what it means (to me) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/2/07
I always heard "never thought tonight you'd ever be this close to me" and then he talks about touching her... It always made sense in my head until I actually looked at the lyrics... I think I'll just stay in my own little world where he says that :).
This song has been driving me absolutely crrrazy! Everytime I would hear that Cure song I couldnt figure out where i had heard those lyrics before. and I never remembered by the time I got home to look them up. Well last night I laid in bed for about and hour thinking what the hell is that from?? Brand New of course.... why didnt I think of that. anyhow this is a great song, one of my favorites. I especially Like "youre what makes new england so great" im from maine so naturally i apply it to my neck of the woods. thanks for listening to me rant.
i think.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/10/07
it symbolizes something ending. a relationship i think, like i never thought this day would end (he had a great day with someone and now its ending) but in his mind he knew that that night would be close to him
what it means | Reviewer: A.j. | 6/5/07
i think when he says " i never thought this night would be so close to me " means he never thought this night would come i.e. like he never thought he'd be in the position he was in, after what happened that day. OR it could mean he never thought that this one day, just another day, would have something so important happen, something so big he wouldn't ever forget the day or where he was that night. that's what i think.

maybe he's just saying that it was a long day and that its so close to being over that he's relieved.....just a thought
