Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine Lyrics - The Killers

Review The Song (22)

We took a walk that night, but it wasn't the same
We had a fight on the promenade out in the rain
She said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go
She couldn't scream while I held her close
I swore I'd never let her go
Tell me what you wanna know
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine
So come on, oh come on, oh come on

I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time
For me to go, so let me know if it's alright
I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth
She couldn't scream while I held her close
I swore I'd never let her go

Tell me what you wanna know

Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on
And then you whisper in my ear
I know what you're doing here
So come on, oh come on, oh come on
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on

lol. try the book Of Mice and Men.
the guy Lenny accidentally kills Curly's wife. he has a crush on her and wanted to touch her hair. she screamed, so he wrapped his arms around her to keep her screams from being heard. hence, "she couldnt scream while i held her close".

some of this IS the interrogation | Reviewer: Schehrzade | 3/16/11

He loved her, she cheated on him, he took her out and killed her (described in the first two songs of the murder trilogy) Now that he's being interrogated he's telling the police 'there aint no motive for this crime, Jenny was a friend of mine' as in he's one of the suspects but he's defending his position by saying he had no reason to kill her as she was a friend.

The Story | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/10/09

Part 1- Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf;
The singer has realised that his girlfriend (Jenny) is having and affair and decides to kill her (if he can't have her nobody can).
'Jennifer, tell me where I stand
And who's that boy holdin' your hand?
Oh, Jennifer, you know I always tried
Before you say goodbye.'

Part 2-Midnight Show;
The singer tells Jenny that he's going to take her out but to keep it a secret (so he has a chance to kill her). He plans to kill her and has a blanket in the back which he is going to use either to kill her or to hide the body ('I got a blanket in the back seat on my mind') He takes her somewhere near the water (the sea or a lake etc more likely the sea) and proceeds to suffocate her (referenced in both MS and JWAFOM). He the dumps the body into the water and drives away.

Part 3- Jenny Was a Friend of Mine;
The singer is being questioned by the police about Jenny's death, he denies it saying that they only fought and then she left. He continues to deny it saying that he had no motive however in a way he is actually admitting to the murder (he suffocated her- 'She couldn't scream while I held her close
I swore I'd never let her go...'). This could be because he feels that he didn't actually murder Jenny as such rather did what was necessary to keep her showing the descent to madness that started in LTBOTS.

Mr Brightside is NOT part of the trilogy, 'The Killers' have said that it is only a trilogy (The Murder Trilogy) but I can easily be seen as a companion song. (This is also the case with Andy, You're a Star)

...yeah | Reviewer: beth13 | 12/2/08

As i said in mr.brightside review:

Mr. Brightside is indeed part of the murder, it is not a trilogy, there is four.
Mr Brightside is the first out of the four.
(Then its Leave the bourbon on the shelf, the midnight show, and jenny was a friend of mine.)
This is pretty much about him and the madness thats becoming of him due to Jenny lying with other men.
"Leave the bourbon on the shelf" is the actual murder, "The midnight show" is disposing of the body, and "Jenny was a friend of mine" is the interview with the cops.

So.. yeah.

well wow,
i love jenny was a friend.
the trilogy is great but i think that mr brightside is connected with it aswell somehow.
then maybe andy you're a star is basically him talking about the guy she meets in leave the bourbon on the shelf.

You're ALL wrong he saying in the first verus that hes mad because they had a fight and alothough she says she loves him she has somewhere to go. So he's pissed and kills her but the cops don't know that so hes like "Why would I kill her we were good friends and I had no reason too!" but really he did.

murder trilogy | Reviewer: kev | 9/11/08

actually the motive was because she was cheating on him. it goes leave the bourbon on the shelf, midnight show, jenny was a friend of mine. leave the bourbon on the shelf is where he finds his woman with another man. midnight show his about the actual murder and taking her to the place to dump her body, the ocean. jenny was a friend of mine is about him being asked about it, like an interrogation. im almost positive hes admitting to it but saying it was justified. or he was saying how she died in his arms and telling this whole alibi. im not sure about jenny was a friend of mine

"She couldn't scream while I held her close"There ain't no motive for this crime"... it means the man it the song killed her but he didnt have any reason to kill her...

brandon flowers i love you. anyway its definately about a murdered girl since brandon flowers said it himself in an interview. i think he is being acused of murdering jenny and says, "there aint know motive for this crime jenny was a friend of mine" meaning that he wouldnt murder her and she was a friend of his but he was kind of mad with her looking at the first verse

my interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/08

im gonna have to disagree with you guys. most of the lyrics suggest that he did in fact kill her. "she couldn't scream while i held her close" and "i swore id never let her go", though she had somewhere to go. When he says "there aint no motive for this crime", he means that he didn't have any reason to kill her but he did anyway
