This song is a cry of desperation to be the man he used to be. He has lived in the good graces of god and told everyone that he is a Christian for so long, that he is now slipping and giving in to the world. He feels like he is blending into the crowd of "insects" and that he is becoming more a part of the world and less a part of his faith. the lines "After years with a crown on my head, I've grown overfed, unconcerned and comfortably numb" and "It was a matter of time--I always said I could see so now I’m going blind" pretty much sum up the song.

When I first heard this song, I was putting it on repeat. The Lyrics are very hard to understand at first. It kind of talks about how he's born with sin and eventually indulges in "...the pleasures of the wealthy". The end talks about a cure...

They both suck now. mewithoutyou's album "I never said i was brave" is good. January 1979 is an awesome song.. Check out underoath's albums "Cries from the past" "Changing of Times" "Act of depression." these are when they bands really were good.

i love this song. the depth and hidden meaning is awesome. mewithout you is an amazing band i love everything they put out. as someone has already said, they are a christian band, but you really wouldn't know it by the style or a preachy messages in the songs. you could notice by the topics they write about, not that they necessarily talk about God, but that the worldview from which they are speaking from is one that lines up with the word of God. also the language they chose to use(or not use) and so on..

mewithoutYou has to be in my top five favorite bands of all time. this song, along with every other one on their albums, contains so many allusions to deeper things. i'm using this song for an ap english poetic evaluation cuz there's so much to it. HURRAY FOR DEPTH!

it truly is an excellent tale and the climactic chapter is titled January 1979, and the song alludes to the book if you read it then the lyrics

This song is one of the best sings i have heard in a long time. people should give it a chance! Yeah, the band is on tooth and nail records which is Christian music but you would never know. this song is not boring and gospely. its sweet dammit!!!
