It's Still Rock and Roll To Me Lyrics - Billy Joel

Review The Song (21)

What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing?
Can't you tell that your tie's too wide?
Maybe I should buy some old tab collars?
Welcome back to the age of jive.
Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey?
You can't dress trashy till you spend a lot of money.
Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me

What's the matter with the car I'm driving?
Can't you tell that it's out of style?
Should I get a set of white wall tires?
Are you gonna cruise the miracle mile?
Nowadays you can't be too sentimental
Your best bet's a true baby blue Continental.
Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk
It's still rock and roll to me.

Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in the papers
'Cause it's always been the same old scene.
There's a new band in town
But you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine...
Aimed at your average teen

How about a pair of pink sidewinders
And a bright orange pair of pants?
You could really be a Beau Brummell baby
If you just give it half a chance.
Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers,
You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers.
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me

What's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing?
Don't you know that they're out of touch?
Should I try to be a straight 'A' student?
If you are then you think too much.
Don't you know about the new fashion honey?
All you need are looks and a whole lotta money.
It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock & roll to me.
Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me

When this song came out, I noticed a lot of things happening in popular music. It's like somebody discovered a gimmick that made one song a hit and thought everybody needed to do it. Police whistles in disco, robotic voice effects in R&B, synthesizers instead of guitars in rock. Wasn't part of the reason The Police broke up was because they went from being a guitar-bass-drums trio to having saxophones and keyboards? The music was still good, but the band changed. ELO went from mixing classical with rock and using a lot of strings to using keyboards. Where are they now? Yet the Rolling Stones, and Billy Joel, keep doing what they do.
Trendy stuff can make you a quick buck in the short term. But if you change just for the sake of being hip or "relevant," you're lost.

awesome! better than today's music | Reviewer: clemins | 3/17/11

its still rock and roll to me is about sticking with what you want and not letting others take control of your opinions. if you think 80s music is better than todays music than go with it and dont change. ive "seen" billy joel once but i was too young to remember. ever since than i havent forgot how 80s and pre-era seemed better than brittney, lil wayne, and others. this is what this means to me.
P.S. if you feel old about kids not knowing 80s music, well i'm turning 16 and i'm feeling old.
P.P.S. lol gareth odd how im always wearing my dads old kiss shirts and having a mullet

We need songs like this,... | Reviewer: Gareth | 3/16/11

... reminding us that the passion we hold for the cool we feel with the love we have for our latest pop culture explosion will someday soon be someone else's KISS t-shirt and mullet.

Like what you like and love what you love. Never apologise for taste (if that's not ridiculous, I don't know what is). If all appreciate is what's in, you'll never really appreciate anything. That's what I get from this song. How about you?

Who I am. | Reviewer: James. | 10/13/10

In this song, I'm the guy avoiding all of the new trends. And It's true. I'm still stuck on rock, blues and metal. and I always will be. And designer clothes? SCREW DESIGNER CLOTHES!! still. this song just screams that there isn't any change. and I agree.

Two Voices | Reviewer: That One Girl | 7/29/10

This song, I believe, is supposed to be sung like there are two people. The first person wonders why people are telling him to get into the new trends. The second person tries to convince him that everything is changing, but the first person knows that everything is the same as it was before.

This still makes sense today. People think that they're making a statement with their clothes or music, but it's been done before. Nothing has changed from the time he wrote this song to the present.

I'm gonna perform IT'S STILL ROCK N ROLL TO ME | Reviewer: MLoh | 3/11/10

I LOVE this song, had the privilege to have seen Billy Joel perform it live TWICE in concert when he was here in Australia (1998, 2008). I especially loved his showmanship on stage, with twirling the mic stand in front of him, grabbing it to chuck up and down during the musical interludes, lifting the mic stand into the air et al :) I'm intending to perform this song with a backing track at my next church Young Adults Acoustics Night at the end of the month, where I fully intend to do the same thing with the mic stand lol

Awsome Song | Reviewer: Scotty K | 9/15/09

I just downloaded both volumes of Billy Joels Greatest Hits, if you like this song, then you should defintly look at other songs Billy Joel has wrote, it wasn't until tonight that I realized how many songs Joel wrote that I have listened to on the Radio. I wasn't even alive when this guy was popular, but I think he should get another chance of being number one.

Ahem... AWESOME!! | Reviewer: Ann-Marie | 7/9/09

So this song is just so Awesome. My mom was an 80s lady, she graduated in 85'. I only got to live a little in the 80s. But my mom has always listened to Billy Joel (and AC/DC, and The Police.) And I fell in love with this song. Billy Joel is just so awesome. I just Heart 80s Music in general. YAY!!! And I am jealous if you can actually remember the 80s.

I absolutely Love This song | Reviewer: Emorly | 4/16/08

I first heard this song in Dance class a few years ago. We were doing it for our summer recital. The next March, I took it to a talent conpetition and won first place and sweepstakes (first of all first places)! i'm now taking it to another competition this summer. This song is the very song I wake up to this morning!!! I absolutley, entirely love this song!!!
