Into The West

Lay down,
your sweet and weary head.
Night is falling.
You have come to journey’s end.

Sleep now, and dream
of the ones who came before.
They are calling,
from across a distant shore.

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see.
All of your fears will pass away.
Safe in my arms,
you’re only sleeping.

What can you see,
on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea,
a pale moon rises.
The ships have come,
to carry you home.

And all will turn,
to silver glass.
A light on the water.
All souls pass.

Hope fades,
Into the world of night.
Through shadows falling,
Out of memory and time.

Don’t say,
We have come now to the end.
White shores are calling.
You and I will meet again.
And you’ll be here in my arms,
Just sleeping.

What can you see,
on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea,
a pale moon rises.
The ships have come,
to carry you home.

And all will turn,
to silver glass.
A light on the water.
Grey ships pass
Into the West.

Wonderfull Amazing Perfect | Reviewer: Alanna [vanya in elvish] | 10/22/09

When I first heard this song I cried. I heard it when my step aunt played LOTR songs on the piano after the funeral of my Nana. It made me think she is in a better place and we will meet again. i love this song and nearly Know it off by heart
BEST SONG EVER

Hope put to music. | Reviewer: IXOYE | 4/3/09

This song made me cry the first time I heard it. I am a guy so that does not happen very often. The first time I heard this song was a week and a half after my best friend was killed by a gang who jumped him and stuck a knife in his chest. I never got to say goodbye, but this song made me realize that I will see him again and goodbyes won't be necessary this time.

Inspiring | Reviewer: Alrune | 3/10/09

Ever since I was little, and for the first time heard the story about a couple of insignificant Hobbits who fought and made their way to save Middle Earth, I was in love. The story is rich with symbols which made it a part of modern mythology.
This song to me translates as parting of friends, so as to continue the never-ending journey. It inspired me so many times, and continues to do so, every time a cycle in my life ends, with that feeling of excitement for the new, unexpected future, mixed with sadness for everything that I am about to leave behind. It captures that moment perfectly...
Beautiful.

Rovidan | Reviewer: Ron | 3/2/09

It's amazing how many reviewers have had the same reactions/emotions to this song. You hear it and cry but your not sure why. You try to sing along, but you can't. You are invariably reminded of some loved one long seperated or gone before. How very rare to find such a beautiful thing that can stir people across the whole spectrum of humanity, Christians, Jews, non-believers, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits... to such base feelings. Well done Annie, et al.

WHere this comes from | Reviewer: hannah Yahudian | 2/11/09

fran walsh, one of the screen writers for LOTR, was inspired by cameron duncan, a New Zealand amateur filmmaker. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a kind of bone cancer) at age 16 in february 2002, and died november 12, 2003. he was 17. pete jackson and the entire cast/crew of LOTR became extremely close with cameron and he produced 2 films, DFK6498 and Strike Zone, with their help.

fran walsh wrote this song for him and all those lost throughout the years and it was played at his funeral and is now played at numerous funerals throughout the world.

RIP cameron duncan

To Whom it my Concern | Reviewer: mark whitelegge | 12/23/08

We played this at my Nan's funeral, i just feel that the song has spirtual sense about it. it gives hope that loved one lost are never far away and that they are waiting and watching over us. not a day that goes by without me playing this song. very moving song it shows us that we can be ourselves and dream about the ones we have lost. so to whom it my concern and all whom now rest in heaven

White shores are calling you and i will meet again......

Origins | Reviewer: David Zexyz | 12/11/08

I am more interested in finding out how the song came to be.

I've read that phrases are taken from the last chapter of the trilogy, and that it was conceived as a bittersweet Elvish lament sung by Galadriel for those who have sailed across the Sundering Sea.

Does anyone know something more?

The only one that helps | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/22/08

I just lost a very close friend to a car accident. This is the only song that really helps - it gives me so much hope for her. Instead of keeping me sad, this song helps me understand her passing and be able to hope for the day I will see her again. Like Sam, I am left behind tearful, but with a promise of reunion.

It's more than a story. | Reviewer: Jon | 9/25/08

This is more tham a story, it's part of my life now. I have to listen to Into The West when im feeling relaxed and calm. Also, as the quote goes off the LOTR trilogy book,

'The reading world is divided into those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings, and those who are about to read them.'
And I'v recently finished reading LORT, and want to read it again because it's got a sense of powerfull emotions in it.

A fitting end for a Noble Hobbit | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/9/08

Each time I hear this piece and imagine the lyrics I try to picture who’s singing them. For me, it’s either a mother who’s goodbye to her child as she slips into that eternal sleep; she asks her “What can you see?” for she does not understand and doubts. Her heart aches to go on that journey with her young one, but she knows that she is not yet allowed. Or I imagine a very old person, who has lived a full and noble life, being greeted by his mother; she cradles him as though he were once young again and welcomes him to the shores of Heaven. She asks, “What can you see on the horizon? Why do the white gulls call?” as an exclamation of her joy that he is finally at peace and at last for him to know that he has been called home.

This song is haunting, yet full of hope. It is a fitting end for Frodo’s journey; we, like Sam, must linger and doubt and wait for our chance to be called home.
