Into The West Lyrics - Annie Lennox
Review The Song (108)
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
[Chorus]
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say:
"We have come now to the end"
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
[Chorus]
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
[Chorus]
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say:
"We have come now to the end"
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
[Chorus]
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass

Cryin' without reason | Reviewer: Adélaïde | 5/4/13
I had never paid attention to the lyrics, but I used to listen and listen again this song... I was crying without knowing why.
I understand now... To my mind, it is about love, and death, and heaven. It is about a world wich doesn't exist but wich I am waiting for...
I would like to be part of this world. I wish the ships... To carry me home.

When ever I hear this I always think of my friend who recently died. She was only nine but lived her short life to the fullest. Her smile brightened up everyone and never thought about her pain. She died with a smile and I hope we will sometime meet beyond the great sea, into the Grey Havens and possible jump on beds again :)

Beautiful | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/5/12
I'm a 21 year old guy and I've always thought that this is a beautiful song. But I've never really listened to it until now. I'm crying my eyes out, which I never have done to a song before (and I listen ALOT to music). This is really the most beautiful song I know. It's going to be played at my funeral some day.
Excellent song but SAD | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/28/12
When I originally heard this song at the end of the 3rd movie, I never thought much of it other than that it was a great song, so befitting the world. However, I just recently figured out what inspired this song and now, every time I hear it, tears come to my eyes which songs NEVER do to me.
Everlasting Love | Reviewer: Iman alidadiani | 12/30/11
Although this song in my opinion is talking of middle earth and valinor, but any way it's an awesome and great explaination of the life, LOVE and after-life;
I've read all tolkien's books(mostly silmarilion and sons of hurin), and I've seen all LOTR more than 200 times.
seriously whenever I listen to this song I can imagine myself in middle earth and when it's finished It makes me sad why I can't be in white city or one of middle earth people.
Whatever, thanks tolkien for his unexplainably beautiful stories and for awesome job of peter jackson for LOTR movie.
Passionate song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/16/11
This song is filled with so much passion. I love this song and listen to it over and over on my iPod. Lord of the Rings are some of my favorite movies but you just can't beat this amazing song of passion Into the West.
Nostalgic.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/11/11
I m fan of LOTR books and the movies...And when I listen to this song I don't know but I...actually want to live there!Sometimes I feel it like my heart is gonna break. If only I lived in Middle Earth....If only I could become one with the world...If only I could hold the world in my very hands...If only I could help make this world a better place...Sometimes it seems impossible how much power and emotion passes through a song...Thanks JRR Tolkien Thanks Annie Lennox thanks Peter Jackson...Thank you my God...

I sung this at my son sung this at his cousin's funeral and it made me so emotional because he was keep checking with me, I used to teach Music, that "Dad, is my singing okay?" and every time I said yes. I was so proud if him when he finished singing it.
saying goodbye | Reviewer: Chris | 4/25/11
I love LOTR both books and film and yes, I agree this is a beautiful song. Both my husband and I waited avidly for the films to come out and then the DVD's.
I used this song at the funeral of my husband. He died suddenly in my arms one Friday afternoon 18 month ago. I still hurt so much. There was nothing I could do to save him, although I tried so hard to do so. This song seems to me to say it all. We all have to say goodbye to someone we love deeply at some time in our lives. It's a hard but inevitable fact of life. I take comfort from these lyrics, You and I will meet again. And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping...
A beautiful song, touchingly performed, and one that will always touch my heart for many reasons.
Thank you all for reading this. RIP John.

I don't cry very often, but whenever I hear this song, I cry so very hard.
I cry becuase the song is so, so beautiful and moving.
I cry because the world is nothing like Lord of the Rings. You finally go back into the real world and no matter what you do, you realize that you can't find the Grey Havens or the West at all. It makes me so sad.
But there is still hope within that song. It tells you that when you are finally done with this life, you will finally go to the West. And it will be better than anything you could ever imagine.

I've noticed that alot of you are totally into The Lord of the Rings. If you like the books, than I suggest you read The Silmarillion. It's about how Middle Earth, the Elves, and the Dark Lord came to be. Very good book.
Goodbye to the characters we came to love and those who have left us behind | Reviewer: debra | 1/5/11
I have read the books & watched the movies. I was a huge fan before the movies came out and though the movies are not verbatim of the books, I came to love the characters just as much as the books. It was hard to say good bye to them when it was over. I bought the last movie a year after my mother died ( she passed away in 2006. I had forgotten the song by the time I bought the last movie and when I heard it during the closing credits, I cried for my mother again. The song helped bring me better closure for my mothers passing and although I miss her still, this song has the power to make me feel that my mother is just sleeping and i will see her again when i go into the west.

The 4th extra disk in the extended ROTK set has an interview with Peter Jackson about this song. The lyrics are a tribute to a young New Zealand film-maker who died just after Peter Jackson got to know him. The lyricist and song-writer were in Abbey Road studios and were in almost constant contact with the young man as they wrote, in London, and he was dying, in New Zealand. The intense power of the lyrics reflects the respect and love that everyone had for the young man. Peter Jackson says in the DVD interview that he is proud to have been able to create this tribute to the young New Zealander. He was taken by cancer.
Tears | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/19/10
I love this song as it says above it brings tears to my eyes. If I were to die today this is the song I want to be played at my funeral. Hopefully I won't die but she is a fantastic song and although it is sad it is just so beautiful.
Emotionally Powerful Lyrics & Music | Reviewer: Val | 8/7/10
My eldest son chose this track to be played at his brothers funeral (our youngest son) We nursed Ian thorugh terminal cancer and his funeral was discussed and planned. I find this track so emotional yet comforting at times too as I like to think of Ian only sleeping in my arms as he often did.
