In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics - Neutral Milk Hotel

Review The Song (35)

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me, me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me, me

What a curious life we have found here tonight
There is music that sounds from the street
There are lights in the clouds
Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees, trees

Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
Now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round' the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

Not about sex. That's the only thing I feel for certain about this song.
And I feel that art is generally not vague. Most artists create something with a specific idea and purpose and that's what their piece is a result of. I haven't heard Jeff Mangum say what this song is about, but I hate when an artist says "this song is about _________" and then listeners are like "um... no it's not." So I view art with the artist in mind and if I don't know for sure what a song is about I don't say "this is what it's about." I know there are some artists who create specifically for others interprutations but I don't think NMH or at least this album is really about.

Great song. | Reviewer: bartleby | 2/24/13

Lots of vibrations. And while I'm at it I find I need to say, or else I probly wouldn't, that art isn't even a little tiny bit about "love of the vague." Any art worth the name is explicit, concrete and immediate as a crack in the sidewalk or a punch in the gut. It might not be all that literal but that has VERY LITTLE to do with being vague and a WHOLE LOT to do with being ambiguous, redolent with many meanings, some more and/or less meaningful (at the very same time) to some than others.

Beautiful song | Reviewer: Eliza | 1/26/13

I've been obsessing over this song for the last couple weeks. every time i hear it i get something new out of it. Sometimes this song makes me feel happy, or nostalgic even. It is a very bittersweet song and takes me to a different world every time i hear it. The lyrics can be interpreted in so many different ways its a beautiful vague piece of art, that is more than a song. It's a memory, it has meaning.

you kidding me | Reviewer: qerasias | 8/21/12

You don't know how to listen to life if you take art literally. that's like trying to take the teachings of any religion literally. don't step on someone because they believe one thing as you believe the other. For all you know you're both morons. I'll indulge your irrationale if it's sensibly creative. But Anne Frank didn't write these lyrics. Anne Frank, the musical, or Anne frank superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This album was simply interpreted. And their interpretations remain vague for the sake of creation. I'd you want it to be about sex, so be it. If you wasn't it to be about necromasturbation, so be it. But when it comes down to it, art is about a love for the vague, not how awesome you think you are.

Mr. Bob Lang,
Seeing the words "Love, Dad" written towards someone other than
me for the first time and in the context of your letter hit me pretty hard. I know you'll probably never read this as your letter was 2 years ago, but I just want to say I cried for you and your son. I feel for you.
Beautiful song.

Dude I totally agree with you but its not because they drifted apart, its because she died. Sex was more than just sex, they made love. They shared beauty in their most vulnerable state. They gave themselves body and soul to eachother. She was his heart, he sadly lost her. I'm in love with this song and what it represents. Either way whatever it represnts, it still means love. The more I listen to it, I'm falling more in love with my GooBer<3 I'm so fuckin burnt, in the craziest state of mind but I'm so much higher when I'm with her. No matter what's wrong with me she loves me. I'm just a dirt bag and she's a princess. Her parents hate me and she doesn't care. I swear myself to her forever and always.

NMH | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/2/11

To the person below:

You do realize that half the songs on this album are about sex, right? You can't really spout critique at "the artists on the radio today" while listening to NMH. Semen stains the mountaintops?

This song whispers about love for someone, and since the album "ITAOTS" is a concept album using Anne Frank's diary, it is about love of a lost girl. It's not about sex, for once. Not every song needs to be about sex, unlike what the artists on the radio today believe.

Just listen and close your eyes and let the song take you above the trees.

This song is beautiful. I love the bitter sweetness of it all. It makes me feel a bit melancholy, but it makes me smile. It's really well written, and fantastically played. I love how he is sad about the death, but makes the best of his life.

@Ukrainan, not sex | Reviewer: Evan | 10/4/10

While there are other songs on the album that deal with sex(two-headed boy, etc) the stanza you mention is actually about death. The girl who he loves is dead (presumably Anne Frank if it follows in suit with the album) and if he thought it would do any good, he would forcibly move the muscles in her mouth to hear her voice again because he misses her so. But he learns to appreciate the beauty in the strangeness and sadness of life and death.

Mmhm. | Reviewer: Kara | 8/9/10

Um one thing, Ukranian, You're a perv. XD And I love how you just focus on only that stanza. Haha
That might be about it, but what about the rest of the song?

I agree with "b | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/20/10" about what the songs about. Its a pretty peaceful feeling at that to listen to it. :] Very raw and beautiful.

SEX! | Reviewer: Ukranian | 6/12/10

'Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
Now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago.
Now he don't even know his name'

This part is about him having finger sex with the partner which the "mouth" is suppose to be the lips of the vagina. He also mentions about the voice as being soft and sweet which means that she's moaning and in the end they don't have sex anymore due to the relationship drifting apart.

whoever said this song makes them want to kill themselves has an incredibly poor grasp of meaning. its actually a bittersweet celebration of all the incredible beauty, the strange wonder, that life contains - and how 'in the blink of an eye' it is gone - and all of our attempts to 'hold it close and keep it here.'

this is a song that should make anyone (except maybe a cynical seventeen year old guy) admire it for the happiness it describes and sigh for how fleeting it all is.

this song always makes me smile, being happy that i am privileged enough to live this mad, beautiful existence -- no matter for how short of an amount of time.

if you think that's a sad concept, then maybe dying is the way for you to go -- because you obviously aren't enjoying the life you're living.

My son Daniel passed away 3 weeks ago. He played this song on guitar and sang like he had written it himself. This was the last song I ever will hear him sing. And like a airoplane over the sea we released his ashes.. May his Soul live on, in a better place. May his return home be filled laughter, joy and music.. Danny, my son I love and miss you Forever! Love, Dad
