In The Garden Lyrics - Van Morrison

Review The Song (18)

The fields are always wet with rain
After a summer shower
When I saw you standin'
Standin' in the garden
In the garden

Wet with rain

You wiped the teardrops from your eye in sorrow
And we watched the petals fall down to the ground
And as I sat beside you I felt the
Great sadness that day

In the garden

And then one day you came back home
You were a creature all in rapture
You had the key to your soul
And you did open
That day you came back

To the garden

The olden summer breeze was blowin' gainst your face

The light of God was shinin' on your countenance divine
And you were a violet colour as you
Sat beside your father and your mother

In the garden

The summer breeze was blowin' on your face
Within your violet you treasure your summery words
And as the shiver from my neck down to my spine
Ignited me in daylight and nature in the garden

And you went into a trance
Your childlike vision became so fine
And we heard the bells within the church
We loved so much
And felt the presence of the youth of eternal summers
In the garden

And as it touched your cheeks so lightly
Born again you were and blushed
And we touched each other lightly
And we felt the presence of the Christ within our hearts

In the garden

And I turned to you and I said

No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father in the garden

No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost
In the garden

Wet with rain

No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature and the Father AND THE SON and the Holy Ghost
In that garden, in the garden, wet with rain

Yeah. Alright.

No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature and the father In the garden

Treasure your summery words | Reviewer: Dunbar | 5/13/14

Some of the comments written by other people here beautifully express the emotions this song evokes. I am glad to share these feelings. I met a homeless man 20 years ago who had been beaten up. My then girlfriend an I went to help him. We waited with him for an ambulance. Whilst he sat on the floor covered in blood he looked like Christ. He sat singing lines from Van the Man songs. My girlfriend cried for days as we listened to these words. Life is so hard at times but there is always Hope

In the Toilet | Reviewer: jan moran | 11/29/13

Pure crap. The lyrics sound like he wrote them sittin on the bowl in the outhouse in his back garden. Just you and I and nature calling. He's a big fraud. Stream on consciouness my A--. Stream of the runs,

Beautiful | Reviewer: Anna | 8/27/13

Today is a bad day, one of the worst days of my whole life, but this song gives me hope and peace. Thank you, Father, for a beautiful and touching song like this one. Not all religious songs are gospel ones.

Van's Genius | Reviewer: Shirley Baker | 6/9/13

In The Garden and These Are The Days are both so exquisite, I am breathless whenever I hear them. Pure bliss. I love Van's voice, lyrics and all that he sings.......He never fails.

PERFECTION!!! | Reviewer: Van Morrison | 10/24/12

I first heard this song on July 4th 2009 when I proposed to my wife. It touched me then and it still touches me to this day. She is gone now, but I think of her and her family every time that I listen to this song. As the days go by, it comes up from time to time as a shuffle within the mass amount of songs from my itunes collection and I just cant help to think that one day, she will come back home... to this garden!

Wow, moved again with the Van | Reviewer: Robert | 7/5/12

In the Garden stirs me at a very deep level. This was our song - my wife subsequently moved on but when I hear this song it reminds me of our wonderful life together. I would love to meet a woman that is as moved by this song as I am - If I find her I know I can't go wrong. Van's music has moves me like no other artist, he is truly a poet and artist of the highest caliber.

Gorgeous and uplifting | Reviewer: seeker | 10/6/11

I heard this song for the first time the other day and it really touched me. I'm going through a very bad time right now and this beautiful song has helped to give me hope. Sounds like it's touched so many others, too.

Take me away, Van! | Reviewer: Debra | 4/21/11

Glory to God, Van! My husband and I have claimed this as our song! What a a beautiful blend of spirit, soul and love! I feel transported to a heavenly place when I hear these lyrics. It's like John's Revelation---yet something I can understand. I believe I will meet my Maker in a garden just like this.

heaven on earth | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/17/11

this song is pure poetry. it captures how heaven visits earth and settles in wet gardens: the 'christ' (i dont hear that as meaning the man himself, but something more abstract), the countenance divine, and none of the trappings of organised religion (no guru and no method and no teacher) - all adding up in the way only van can do it. exquisite

he means so much | Reviewer: stephen durrant | 7/2/10

I am pretty new to the internet.I have been
lisening to van since 68. spent about 15 years
refusing to listen to anything but him, which
I now realize was rather silly.
Anyway, I got the lyrics up for in the garden and
I was blown away by the comments. Ifeel the same way for about 200 of his songs,

amazing | Reviewer: Sam | 7/29/09

I don't believe in God and I'm not involved in any religion, but this song is just amazing and I think it gives a certain strength to everybody who listens to it. everyone can interpret this song in his own way and it's that what makes this song so beatiful.

Beautiful | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/12/09

Went to church today and they sang "In the Garden" and I loved it. So I searched for the song tonight, feeling really low and this Van Morrison came up as a suggestion. I downloaded it. Truly a blessing, this song. Thanks be to God.

My life | Reviewer: Matt | 6/20/09

I am a young musician mostly into hard rock and such but this is probably the first song I remember from my childhood. I ignored it for several years but as I came back to it I realized that this is and always was my favorite song. It's an emotional journey through my childhood memories and truly Is one of the most...the most beautiful song I ever heard

would like to know.. | Reviewer: Sharon | 1/24/09

I have the live version of this and there is a line that I would like to'let Him take His wife to the _?_________?____.' Would really appreciate it if someone could let me know. Thankyou .

I agree with you all | Reviewer: Bob Haskell | 11/16/08

This is indeed one of the most spiritually, emotionally, passionately beautiful songs of all time, sung by the passionately beautiful Van under full sway of his Muse and his gift.

I love it, too. It has punctuated my life at its most intense moments, and is one of my favorite treasures in life...
