In The Backseat Lyrics

Performed by The Arcade Fire
Review The Song (24)

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don't have to drive,
I don't have to speak,
I can watch the country side,
and I can fall asleep.

My family tree's
losing all its leaves,
crashing towards the driver's seat,
the lightning bolt made enough heat
to melt the street beneath your feet.

Alice died
in the night,
I've been learning to drive.
My whole life,
I've been learning.

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don't have to drive,
I don't have to speak,
I can watch the country side

Alice died
in the night,
I've been learning to drive.
My whole life,
I've been learn----Oh....

it's a great song | Reviewer: a girl | 3/25/11

such an amazing song. it makes me think of how when i was a kid i would just doze off sitting in the backseat.... such a wonderful feeling, sitting still while the outside world moves past you
now i think about how when i'm hitchhiking with a friend i always make him take shotgun so i could sit quietly and watch the road while he talks with whoever picked us up, lol
:)

All my life I played music, but I've never heard anything like this song. Pure, raw emotion simply
pours out of her soul. Not only can you see the
sadness in the video, but you also see the support from her other musicians swarming around her. Not only can she perform this song but obviously she has lived it.

Great Song | Reviewer: Animal | 12/27/10

I'm just now discovering this band. I was blown away with how beautifully crafted this song is. It reminds me a lot of Bjork from the 90's. I don't have a spin on what the song means...I think that's well covered already.

Superb Song | Reviewer: Armond | 8/19/10

This is a wonderful, emotional song to finish "Funeral." The song still pertains to the central theme of the album: the passing of loved ones. This song brings me to tears with the dramatic buildups and the easily experienced, metaphorical lyrics. Basically, being in the back seat means to be as a child. As a kid there are no responsibilities and everything simply observed. But since "Alice", the mother, has passed away, she now has to take control of her life as the adult now. This song is simply a tearjerker when reminiscing about childhood, growing up, and the death of a beloved parent.

Honestly | Reviewer: Jerry | 7/31/10

Like seriously, she better be singing more in their upcoming cd. Everywhere I look in this world, the man may be the thinker or something but the womens usually the head of the group or the family or whatever. Definitely in this band, you just feel more from her words, don't get me wrong the guys great but shes greater

A Gorgeous piece Spectacular In the back seat | Reviewer: Sarita | 4/7/10

The song in the backseat is a mixture of slow strings, to rocking guitar and drums.

The song is written my arcade fire. The girl whom sings the song sings about her mother who had recently passed away in other words Alice. I believe the song is based on being in the backseat as a child, and never learning how to drive. The point where it says my family tree is losing all it’s leaves or Alice died means her family passes on and she has no one driving. The only problem is she never learnt to drive, so how could you drive if you haven’t learned. It’s as a metaphor for choosing your decisions and not laying back making everyone decide where your going with your life. You decide where you want to go but poor for her she never learnt to make her own descisions (learn to drive) with no one left to make descisions for her she therefore sings this song or something sry I am just saying what I think. For 12 I love to describe songs.

I am also doing a painting of this song for school

Liked it very much | Reviewer: 7007513 | 3/12/09

I think it's about how comfortable she felt having her mother around, how protected and peaceful. And suddenly she loses her in a car accident and has to make herself responsible for her own life and well..grow up :p

Anti-Control | Reviewer: Anna | 2/28/09

Its about not wanting to take control of your own life, about wanting other people to tell you what to do, where to go etc, so that you don't have to go to the effort of working it all out for yourself; someone's there to tell you what to do. Anyway, I'm drunk and repeating myself, but seriously:

I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don't have to drive,
I don't have to speak,
I can watch the country side,
and I can fall asleep.

Thats what it says to me anyway. Which admittedly, its easier to be liked sometimes, especially in youth, than it is to be yourself.

possibly the dumbest thing ive ever heard | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/30/09

Whoever wrote the piece about this being about losing virginity, you are a complete idiot? Thats the stupidest theory I've ever heard and you sound like a cunt when you attempt poetry. Please don't write anything ever again and save the human race from such pathetic crack-brained drivel.

About her mother | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/12/08

This song is about her mother dying, her mother died in a car crash, she has a phobia & grief of driving because of it, and the learning to drive part is for closure, it's nothing to do with virginity lmao or anything else, it's an incredible touching song & she's strong to have sung it, people's interpretations are weird lol don't look so much into it though, you'll miss the true meaning
