Review about In The Backseat Liked it very much | Reviewer: 7007513 | 3/12/09
I think it's about how comfortable she felt having her mother around, how protected and peaceful. And suddenly she loses her in a car accident and has to make herself responsible for her own life and well..grow up :p
Its about not wanting to take control of your own life, about wanting other people to tell you what to do, where to go etc, so that you don't have to go to the effort of working it all out for yourself; someone's there to tell you what to do. Anyway, I'm drunk and repeating myself, but seriously:
I like the peace
in the backseat,
I don't have to drive,
I don't have to speak,
I can watch the country side,
and I can fall asleep.
Thats what it says to me anyway. Which admittedly, its easier to be liked sometimes, especially in youth, than it is to be yourself.
Whoever wrote the piece about this being about losing virginity, you are a complete idiot? Thats the stupidest theory I've ever heard and you sound like a cunt when you attempt poetry. Please don't write anything ever again and save the human race from such pathetic crack-brained drivel.
About her mother | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/12/08
This song is about her mother dying, her mother died in a car crash, she has a phobia & grief of driving because of it, and the learning to drive part is for closure, it's nothing to do with virginity lmao or anything else, it's an incredible touching song & she's strong to have sung it, people's interpretations are weird lol don't look so much into it though, you'll miss the true meaning
I hear this song as a moving out of her comfortable naive stage of life. She's been forced to grow up and she can't watch the clouds anymore because now SHE has to drive. She's been learning her whole life to drive and now there's almost some sort of hesitance. Her voice just exudes pain.. I love this song.
The meaning of the song | Reviewer: Mitch | 5/12/08
When i listened to this song, i wondered, "what was she singing for?" Does anyone think that the song means that she hadnt matured or grown really until alice died, maybe her mother? And now she had to grow up. So possibly this song was about a rite of passage?
One of the very best songs ever | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/18/08
At first, oddly, I thought it was a song about loosing your virginity (In the backseat), I didn't listen to the lyrics very well... Now that I read them, I can see it's a loss of innocence she is talking about. But isn't virginity one of the purest forms of innocence?
Alice died in the night I've been learning to drive... Intense, powerful, simply one of the purest form of melancoly trying to heal itself in contempt of what's lost to children when they become cold, shallow adults.
Yet some of us retain the ability to feel, to dream.
Ah, childhood, this paradise is lost only to those who fear to shed a tear when the sun fades down...
One of the best songs of the album funeral...I think the backseat is the only safe place to be where you dont have to speak if you don't want to, and to think while watching clouds go by...I think they recorded in one track, I love hearing the emotion in her voice, and hear the sadness, It's amazing!!!
innocence | Reviewer: soilssong | 11/4/07
I've always thought this song was about loosing your innocence, becoming an adult and wishing you were a kid again.
When you're a child, you sit in the backseat, you don't have to care about anything, you have no responsibilty, you just enjoy and watch life. When you grow up (learning to drive) you loose your innocence, your parents die, you take their place, the alice in you has died.
This song is incredible, one my favourite. Can't believe I'm seeing them at latitude I just cannot wait.
