If Lyrics - Pink Floyd

Review The Song (8)

If I were a swan, I'd be gone.
If I were a train, I'd be late.
And if I were a good man,
I'd talk with you
More often than I do.

If I were to sleep, I could dream.
If I were afraid, I could hide.
If I go insane, please don't put
Your wires in my brain.

If I were the moon, I'd be cool.
If I were a rule , I would bend.
If I were a good man, I'd understand
The spaces between friends.

If I were alone, I would cry.
And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry.
And if I go insane,
Will you still let me join in with the game?

If I were a swan, I'd be gone.
If I were a train, I'd be late again.
If I were a good man,
I'd talk with you
More often than I do.

Old Floyd, drugs not necessary, only imagination/mental imagery. Loved Atom Heart... B-Side,"If", excellent tune to shout out on the guitar by campside fire, or while in the bath, or both, if that's possible..as well as the following tunes on both album sides. Hey, they're split now, but not our memories of all of them/great music pre-divorce :)

Spaces | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/26/12

So many PF songs happened to be prophetic: they talk about spaces between friends, and that's exactly what happened to them just as they reached the incredible and unexpected succes of The Dark Side of the Moon. The spaces between those 4 friends kept on growing and growing until the band broke up.
The best prophecy is anyway that of the rockstar buying a football team from Money. :D

What happened to music? The songs like these are gone now, songs that echo in your very marrow and bind with your being. Now all we have is crap like Good Charlotte and Creed. What is this? A big JOKE?

Lennon was right... The dream is over.

Atom Heart Mother - If | Reviewer: Denis Stockhausen Von Ulm | 5/5/09

A great song indeed, however not a masterpiece. After listening to the first side, Atom Heart Mother, this song creates a very big contrast. Very touching, but musical, incomparable to Atom Heart Mother.
By the way The Pink Floyd had sort of a rest after More - AHT, Ummagumma Meddle, and especially OBC - they only only 1 or two masterpieces on them, and the rest in just to fill up the space on the record.
I wish Syd and Rick were here....

Great song | Reviewer: TheWizardKs | 5/1/09

PF has always been known for their mood changing effects on audiences. There is no doubt that this song ranks right up in the top of their repertoire in its ability to move you. I nearly cry everytime I think about how there will never be any new PF music released.

Another one of the very many | Reviewer: Robert | 4/2/09

Unfortunately, in America, so much of Pink Floyd was not and still isn't appreciated pre-Dark Side Of The Moon. Meddle, Atom Heart Mother and Umma Gumma were 3 fabulous albums, as was The Final Cut, if only it had been released as a Waters Solo. I listen to "If" in many variations from live concerts of decades gone by every day.

just wanted to say the title of the album actually is Atom Heart Mother instead of Atom Hearted Mother. This song is one of Roger Waters's more personal songs indeed, besides "The Wall" which is an autobiographic work in some aspects.

Atom Hearted Mother- If- the lost ballad | Reviewer: Chuck Steffen | 1/20/09

this is one of those intimate and heartfelt ballad ever wrote, and I consider it a "lost" ballad because it is one of the highlights of Atom Hearted Mother, an album, by the way, that the late Rick Wright, considered their weakest albums. I don't agree with him, but I play this ballad on my acoustic guitar at many open mike nights and jams, and the response is always overwhelming. Interesting to note, that when I play this song on my guitar or play the track to any of my friends, they never come close to guessing that it is a Pink Floyd track, though to me , it is quite obvious, at least by the time Gilmour tosses in a short lead break, that this song is obviously classic Floyd. It could be that it is so intimate and such a soft and tender piece , that it is easy to overlook with all of the great music they have put out. Seek out this track, find it , and give it a good listen. You won't be disappointed.
