If I Go Away Lyrics - Savatage

Review The Song (2)

Somewhere on that long lonely road
We all stand alone
Looking for clues
From our different views

In the dark I've called out your name
It echoes in vain
Over again
In an empty room

If I go away
What would still remain of me
The ghost within your eyes
The whisper in your sighs
You see
Believe
And I'm always there

Staring down a long empty hall
sponsored links
Pictures on walls
All with your name
But it's not the same

Searching for the chord I can't hear
Been searching for years
It's somewhere inside
But it's well disguised

If I go away
What would still remain of me
The ghost within your eyes
The whisper in your sighs
You see
Believe
And I'm always there

Someday I'll take a chance
You find them where you can
They tend to slip away
Those doors to yesterday

Forever is a long time they say
Maybe some day
I'll meet you there
If you've time to spare
Tell me then
Where I can go
Where they won't know
Who I have been
Can we start again

And if I go away
What would still remain of me
The ghost within your eyes
The whisper in your sighs
You see
Believe
And I'm always there

The End Of An Era | Reviewer: bd | 5/10/09

Savatage drove a nail into the coffin of what was know variously as pop-metal, hair rock, butt rock, and even glam with their album "Streets: A Rock Opera" insofar as the genre would offer nothing comparable to follow this 1991 release. Perhaps it is fitting that the end of an era should come through such a seemingly stale format, the rock opera.

Taken as a stand-alone single, "If I Go Away" sounds suspiciously like a mandatory power ballad, but at least four other songs from the album could claim that role, as well. In that context, the song would rate a couple stars at best.

However, in a more appropriate context, the song is much stronger. The role it plays in conveying the underlying story is a strong one, as our hero reflects on his own potential for self-destruction and wonders what effect he has really had on the world. The musical genre is known more for its superficiality; few power ballads convey true emotion. Yet, Streets might prove to be the band's magnum opus, and its meticulous construction—drawn from a novel manuscript by producer Paul O'Neill—is part of the reason why. "If I Go Away" is a powerful catharsis that defies the genre's treatment of such meter and range. Its enduring strength, like the rest of the album, is its lack of cotton-candy sentimentality. There are no sweet love songs; the human sympathy inherent to this track is more deeply human than they typical faux-romance of the cheesy, career-damaging power ballads brought on by the majority of pop-metal representatives.

Still, there are stronger appeals in the power ballad form. The album's closing tracks, "Somewhere In Time" and "Believe", are both stronger than one might expect, and although these songs exploit familiar chords and intervals, they still deliver, after all these years, a certain melodic and lyrical strength that defies expectation. Streets remains among my favorite albums, and "If I Go Away" is near the heart of its endurance. All in all, it's a three-star song with heavy earworm potential. On the one hand, beware of that. To the other, enjoy it.
