I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You) Lyrics - John Mayer

Review The Song (12)

No I'm not the man I used to be lately
See you met me at an interesting time
If my past is any sign of your future
You should be warned before I let you inside

Hold on to whatever you find baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find baby
I don't trust myself with loving you

I will beg my way into your garden
I will break my way out when it rains
Just to get back to the place where I started
So I can want you back all over again

Hold on to whatever you find baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find baby
I don't trust myself with loving you

Who do you love?
Girl I see through, through your love
Who do you love me or the thought of me? me or the thought of me?

Hold on to whatever you find baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find baby
I don't trust myself with loving you

Hold on to whatever you find baby
Hold on to whatever gets you through through
Hold on to whatever you find baby
I don't trust myself with loving you
I don't trust myself with loving you
I don't trust myself with loving you
I don't trust myself with loving you

Not Happy | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/4/11

What's in it for the person who does the charming, leaving and then begging back? Let me answer that>>>>EGO gratification. "And you'll add my name to the long list of those who don't understand and I'll regret the day when i refused to listen when they said run as fast as you can"!

My interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/17/11

I completely relate to this song. He's 'not the man' he used to be..His heart has been broken before, he was more reliable and trustworthy in love, he had more faith in love. 'If my past is any sign of your future' suggests that he has not been committed or reliable to those he was in a relationship with before, and why he is warning her not to expect a future with him.
So he is telling her to 'hold on to whatever you find'. If she meets someone else more worthy or who loves her then she should stick with them because they 'will get you through'. He is emphasizing that he can't give her what she wants, the love that she wants.
He only wants to be around her when things are good, and 'I will break my way into your garden' suggests that he will do anything to have her when she is not his, and she is happy, as a garden demonstrates something attractive and fertile. As soon as the emotions come out, as soon as it stops being superficial, he leaves 'when it rains', when the pressure is on to be something more substantial. He is all about the chase, he goes back to the beginning because that's the most exciting part, to 'want you back all over again', and it doesn't demonstrate any real commitment.
But he turns it back on her, he asks her 'who do you love' because he doesn't believe her love is truly genuine, as she evidently doesn't know him or see him for what her really is, which is why he accuses her of only loving the 'thought of me' and being just as superficial as he is.
It's beautifully written because its so simple

What it really says | Reviewer: Occasional Lover | 9/11/10

I think, that what he's really saying, is that he does love her but he's not a good lover to have. He's going to break her heart when he leaves and again if she lets him come back. He feels like his past relationships have made him numb to new relationships, and he wonders why she loves him. Is it his qualities, or is it him as a person? He's selfish enough to want her, though he knows he'll let her go... but he's honorable enough to warn her upfront. This song, if written from a female prospective, could define every relationship I've ever been in. It makes sense.

true meaning | Reviewer: d ev | 7/14/10

what he is really saying is when he first meets a girl the feelings are strong. Its something new and exciting.. the longer it goes on he gets bored. If he leaves her then he wants her back because he can't have her... Aka john is a playa playa!

great song to use to put the breaks on a rebound relationship | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/7/10

music speaks for you sometimes when you don't get it yourself... Hearing this song allowed me to understand I needed to push her away NOW... not later but NOW! This is a very interesting time for me and my past relationship has taken and continue to take it's toll on me as the children we share doesn't allow for a clean break... my heart is broken and I tried healing it with "begging my way into another's garden just to break away every time it rained... & courting her again was exciting and fresh all over again.. & again on cue ... she was in love with the thought of me, NOT ME... cause honestly this is not me... right now because I cannot trust myself loving anyone new...
Great song, great meaning ... whatever it holds for you...

What John is trying to say in this song is that before, his past relationships the girl treated him badly. Now he doesn't know why but he knows that he wants things he can't have. When he ha them he gets bored and he's just warning the girl to hold on because it might not last long or go through bumpy rides.

this song is not about "not loving that girl", it's about the feelings you have, when you meet someone new and compare things to the stuff you've been through lately. role's are switched - the last time you were the one totally in love and your girl back then was unsure, because she had the same experiences too... first love is so easy...it just get's fuzzier each time you break up and wanna start again with someone new...

John communicates through music | Reviewer: marcia sharp | 7/22/08

It's clear the author is letting his baby know that he does not have that feeling any longer...he cares,he wants to be good to the person involved with him but he knows he may not be able to make "her" happy although he deaperately wants to attempt it. He says: look at my past, it's a warning, I'm going to hurt you, I don't want to be responsible for the hurt I may cause you. It's letting someone know I am no good for you, I do not know what you see in me, (who do you love?) I don't understand why you love me. Hold on to whatever you saw in me, hold on to that "delusion" if it helps you get through...I don't want you anymore, I'll try to want you all over again.
Poor Jen...

Great Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/2/08

This song describes perfectly how I feel lately about meeting anyone. Its describing perfectly how you must take things slowly and that involves that ole push and pull.

I will beg my way into your garden
And well I'll break my way out when it rains
Just to get back to the place where i started
So i can watch you back all over again

See you met me at an interesting time.. I dont trust myself | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/7/07

This song totally reminds me of my boyfriend and the struggles he was going through when he met me. I am glad to say we are still together after 4 yrs... Love this song!
