I AM A PATRIOT Lyrics - Jackson Browne

Review The Song (2)

And the river opens for the righteous (5 times)
Someday

I was walking with my brother
And he wondered what's on my mind
I said what I believe in my soul
Ain't what I see with my eyes
And we can't turn our backs this time

I am a patriot
And I love my county
Because my country is all I know
I want to be with my family
People who understand me
I've got nowhere else to go

And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous

Someday

And I was talking with my sister
She looked so fine
I said, "Baby, what's on your mind?"
She said, "I want to run like the lion
Released from the cages
Released from the rages
Burning in my heart tonight"

And I ain't no communist
And I ain't no capitalist
And I ain't no socialist
And I ain't no imperialist
And I ain't no democrat
So I ain't no republican
I only know one party
And it is freedom

I am, I am, I am
I am a patriot
And I love my country
Because my country is all I know

And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
Someday

And the river opens for the righteous...(repeats)
I want to run like the lion,
Released from the cages
Released from the rages
I said what I believe in my soul
It ain't what I see with my eyes
Someday (repeats)

Another Version | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/1/12

Jackson Browne's long-time friend and perennial back-up musician, David Lindley, aka "The Wizard of Strings", aka the high falsetto on the song "Stay," aka the only musician "Acoustic Guitar" has labeled a "maxi-instrumentalist" (as opposed to those who are merely "mega-instrumentalists", LOL) etc., etc., etc. does an absolutely kickass reggae-inflected version of this song on his album Twango Bango Deluxe with Wally Ingram. Not easy to find...totally worth it, believe me.

Excellent Non-sectarian Political Commentary | Reviewer: essbeeaych | 10/9/07

I had never heard this song until about two years ago when I read a review of his "World In Motion" album. )Do take note that Jackson Browne did not write this song. It was written by Little Steven, Steven Van Zandt of the E Street Band & Sopranos fame.) I've never heard another version of this song other than this by Jackson Browne, so that should be kept in mind when reading my comments. This the best, most politically evocative songs I have ever heard, and the conviction with which it is sung gives me hope that, yes, "someday" we will rise above the tired-out politics that have been ingrained in generations to realize that we all should have the common goal of living to respect the right of each human to be treated with dignity & value. Does each human deserve such treatment? It is something that should be assumed, but also something that can be forfeited if a person does not extend the same treatment to others.

As childish and naive as it may sound, this song lifts me more than any religious song I have ever heard. It's simple & beautiful message of freedom touches me, and causes me to think of how so often we take for granted our freedom, while so many people, in so many places in the world ache for this greatest gift.

Lots of people want to pile on Jackson Browne for using his fame as a launching pad for social issues & political dissent. However, he isn't simply a celebrity who contributes to some cause. He lives it, and gives himself in sincerity. This is an example of a celebrity using the leverage created by their name & fame to actually do good in this world, not just someone lending their name to the social consciousness fad of the week.

This song, along with "Lives In The Balance", is a clear statement of beliefs by an artist who, through introspection & examination of the world that touches us all, raises our consciousness, if we dare to allow him.
