His is one of the greatest performances of this song. Although I am not a musician by any means, I do appreciate the country music of yesteryear, moreso than most I hear today. Yes No Great songs era. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/22/2005 Yes, this song is absolutely filled with a soul of its own, yet it is one that everyone with at least a moderate degree of experience with life can relate to. It comes from a time when the Great Depression was not such a distant relative. I can remember when there were country singers who would get so worked up over a song, while they were performing, that they would sometimes express their great sadness by tearing and ripping their shirts off their bodies. Communicating such a feeling is not an easy task for the performer, yet Hank Williams was able to do it without tearing his shirt off. I believe Elvis said it was the saddest song he'd ever heard or sung. Hank Williams was a genius, no doubt about that. It has to be the yardstick against which all country tunes should be measured, and I'm not talking the crap which today they call "Country Music". Today's "Country Music" is nothing more than pop music with a twang. I'd like to go back to the days of Hank Sr., Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Paycheck, Johnny Cash, et al. THOSE were true Country Musicians!!! If you don't like my opinion, that's okay, because music is a matter of taste. At least I CAN play it and write it...not just listen to it.
