Human Lyrics - The Killers

Review The Song (13)

I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind

And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Hear my regards to soul and romance
They always did the best they could

And so long to devotion
You taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye, wish me well
You've gotta let me go

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

You've gotta let me know

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

the word dense is ambiguous...an informal meaning of dense is 'stupid'...are we human tries to interpret the free element of our nature while are we denser tries to investigate whether we're all dummies and puppets unable to act on our own..

i really think it's 'denser' and not 'dancer'.if it were dancer, then it should be in plural form cos the question's '...or are we dancer?'.are we human tries to investigate the true nature of one...or are we denser tries to the deeper nature of ourselves

My personal meaning for this song... | Reviewer: Nicole | 2/3/11

...is probably a little different than everyone else's, but isn't that the way songs work? :)

When I hear the line "Are we human or are we dancer?" I think more along the lines of "Are we human" - just ordinary creatures going through the motions of life - "or are we dancer?" - going through life with a sense of spirit and animation.

In my mind, no interpretation of the song is incorrect. Even if it's different from what the artist intended, art has different meaning for everyone.

It's a song of meaning. | Reviewer: Brian z | 3/28/10

There's no use of arguing over what the lyrics actually mean. The song is suppose to be interpreted whatever way we want, kind of like we attach are own meaning from experiences to it. This song could mean something totally different to Brandon Flowers... so who knows.

Anyways, to me, the meaning has to do with life and where we stand. Are we human? ( are we just organisms of the earth bound to make decisions where our fate is unknown?) Or are we dancer? (our fate is already determined, we have a set path, kind of like dancers who have to perform set moves for a performance)

It's whatever you want it to be.

It seems to me, that the songs talks of the end of a long relationship, about being together because you are used to or because you really love a person. I think being human or dancer is about that, about realizing the truth and being able to confront it, instead of just keep on moving mechanically.
And "im on my knees, looking for the answer" is trying to notice the reality and searching for the courage to end something that we are used to, and fond with, but that its not the truth anymore.

I listened to the lyrics again, having learned that the lead singer is a Morman. "When the call came down the line" may be his calling from God. "I'm on my knees looking for the answers" is his praying, asking for directioni. "My sign is vital" is his sign from God. And the "Are we human or are we dancer?" is asking if we're human in this world of wrong doing and disasters that are going on around us. Are we acknowledging the terrible things going on around us, do we care, can we feel the need to do something "or are we dancer" - are we just pirouetting around the issues, ignoring the good which needs to be done.

to the person who posted with title gorgeous on 12/17/08; you said denser doesn't make sense? in all ways, all songs are poems. therefore, denser is the logical word, plus grammatically dancer can never be used in the context that it is. secondly, if you think about "human or denser" the meaning connotates the question "are we human, the only living things possible of expressing emotion, or are we something denser, something that is more compact and less able to express feelings and exercise freedom, something that is incapable of living colorfully. the word "denser" in the context of the line in the song is synonymous with "duller", assuming denser is the interpreted word. enough of that debate though. like all poetry, songs are written for one purpose but intended by society to be interpreted by each individual hearing that song or poem. so, one person may place the word "denser" in the song because it makes the song have more meaning to them; like myself for example because it is more grammatically and literally correct in terms of english and context. however, other will find more meaning in the song use the word "dancer". it doesn't matter which word it really is, it just matters that you take meaning from whatever word you use to fill in the debatable blank.

In regards to the poster two down from me, when he says "Are we dancer?" He's using dancer as a adjective, instead of a noun (in which case he would say "Are we dancers?") to say that we're NOT free, that we're just going along with everyone else. In a choreographed dance routine, the dancers have no emotion or ability to do what they want to, if someone messes it up, everyone notices. You can match every line of the song to that concept, "Cut the cord" being cutting the 'puppet strings' that keep you in line with everyone else, and "Let me know, is your heart still beating?" is more or less asking 'Are you still human?'. In this case, it is using dancer as a negative adjective, promoting being simply human. Is being human so bad?

Love this song | Reviewer: Andrea M. | 12/22/08

As said before, the line is "Are we human or are we dancer?" That is the lyrics on the Killer's website, and Flowers has said the line was inspired by a comment by Hunter S. Thompson about how America is "raising a generation of dancers."

Beautiful, beautiful song. =)
