Human Lyrics

Review The Song (8)Print the Lyrics
I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door

Close your eyes, clear your heart

Cut the cord
Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion, you taught me everything I know
Wave good bye, wish me well

You gotta let me go
Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?

Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message were receiving
Let me know is your heart still beating

Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer

You've gotta let me know
Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human?
Or are we dancer?

Are we human or are we dancer?
Are we human or are we dancer?

I listened to the lyrics again, having learned that the lead singer is a Morman. "When the call came down the line" may be his calling from God. "I'm on my knees looking for the answers" is his praying, asking for directioni. "My sign is vital" is his sign from God. And the "Are we human or are we dancer?" is asking if we're human in this world of wrong doing and disasters that are going on around us. Are we acknowledging the terrible things going on around us, do we care, can we feel the need to do something "or are we dancer" - are we just pirouetting around the issues, ignoring the good which needs to be done.

to the person who posted with title gorgeous on 12/17/08; you said denser doesn't make sense? in all ways, all songs are poems. therefore, denser is the logical word, plus grammatically dancer can never be used in the context that it is. secondly, if you think about "human or denser" the meaning connotates the question "are we human, the only living things possible of expressing emotion, or are we something denser, something that is more compact and less able to express feelings and exercise freedom, something that is incapable of living colorfully. the word "denser" in the context of the line in the song is synonymous with "duller", assuming denser is the interpreted word. enough of that debate though. like all poetry, songs are written for one purpose but intended by society to be interpreted by each individual hearing that song or poem. so, one person may place the word "denser" in the song because it makes the song have more meaning to them; like myself for example because it is more grammatically and literally correct in terms of english and context. however, other will find more meaning in the song use the word "dancer". it doesn't matter which word it really is, it just matters that you take meaning from whatever word you use to fill in the debatable blank.

In regards to the poster two down from me, when he says "Are we dancer?" He's using dancer as a adjective, instead of a noun (in which case he would say "Are we dancers?") to say that we're NOT free, that we're just going along with everyone else. In a choreographed dance routine, the dancers have no emotion or ability to do what they want to, if someone messes it up, everyone notices. You can match every line of the song to that concept, "Cut the cord" being cutting the 'puppet strings' that keep you in line with everyone else, and "Let me know, is your heart still beating?" is more or less asking 'Are you still human?'. In this case, it is using dancer as a negative adjective, promoting being simply human. Is being human so bad?

Love this song | Reviewer: Andrea M. | 12/22/08

As said before, the line is "Are we human or are we dancer?" That is the lyrics on the Killer's website, and Flowers has said the line was inspired by a comment by Hunter S. Thompson about how America is "raising a generation of dancers."

Beautiful, beautiful song. =)

Gorgeous | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/17/08

wonderful song, best song since "Somebody Told Me"! :D

by the way, whoever the Holly girl was, she was totally wrong about 'dancer' being 'denser'. it is really 'dancer', trust me. it's on The Killers' website and every other lyrics site out there. it represents being free and dancing like a puppet. so, are we human, or a we a puppet dancing is what that line from the chorus is trying to say. 'denser' makes no sense.

umm.. | Reviewer: Katie | 11/25/08

It really is "dancer" not "denser". The band's official website says so. As does Entertainment Weekly. It's a metaphor for being free versus being a puppet on strings. human vs. dancer. I would've submitted for a change in lyrics but for some reason it won't let me. Someone else PLEASE change it.

Simply amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/14/08

This song is fantastic from the first second to the last, from the first time you hear "are we human or are we dancer?". its simply amazing, the emotion, the lyrics, everything is perfect
well done killers
