Hit The Switch Lyrics - Bright Eyes

Review The Song (9)

I'm staring out into that vacuum again
From the back porch of my mind
The only thing that's alive, I'm all there is
And I start attacking my vodka
Stab the ice with my straw
My eyes have turned red as stoplights
You seem ready to walk
You know I'll call you eventually
When I wanna talk, 'til then you're invisible

Cause there's this switch that gets hit
And it all stops making sense
And in the middle of drinks
Maybe the fifth or the sixth
I'm completely alone at a table of friends
I feel nothing for them
I feel nothing, nothing.

Well I need a break from the city again
I think I'll ship myself back west
I've got a friend there she says,
"hey anytime"
Unless that offers expired
I have been less than frequent
She's under no obligation
To indulge every whim
And I'm so ungrateful, I take
She gives and forgives and I keep forgetting it

And each morning she wakes
With a dream to describe
Something lovely that bloomed
In her beautiful mind
I say, "I'll trade you one
For two nightmares of mine,
I have somewhere I die,
I have somewhere we all die"

I'm thinking of quitting drinking again
I know I've said that a couple of times
And I'm always changing my mind
Well I guess I am
But there's this burn in my stomach
And there's this pain in my side
And when I kneel at the toilet
And the morning's clean light
Pours in through the window
Sometimes I pray I don't die
I'm a goddamn hypocrite

But then night rolls around and it all starts making sense
There is no right way or wrong way, you just have to live
And so I do what I do, and at least I exist
What could mean more than this?
What would mean more, mean more?

I have some | Reviewer: FeversMirrors | 5/16/13

I think after the line 'For two nightmares of mine' it should be:
'I have some where I die'
'I have some where we all die'
because he's (or from the perspective of the song: she's) talking about some of her dreams.

What does it mean..... To you. | Reviewer: Kevin Nichols | 9/26/10

It really doesn't matter what it is he's talking about, you're supposed to connect to the song in your own way. May I make a suggestion? Let's forget about thinking about Conor, and start to look through our own eyes. What did we feel? Did we remember a time in our lives that was consumed by this feeling? Maybe we're sitting in it now?

This song doesn't make me feel like I'm not alone, it makes me feel like when I feel that way it will eventually pass. That the sorrow that comes with the loss I've felt will soon lift it's burden from my shoulders and I'll be free to dance like I use to, sing with this voice that's gone numb. Someday soon.

Conor always write realy great lyrics. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/8/10

I'm not sure he was taking specifically about addictions, although that is the example he used I don't think that's the root of the songs meaning. I think he's talking about the feeling that you get, or at least I get it, when you just feel so distant from people and everything and you just stop to care. Many people may turn to alcohol or drugs at this point but I think he's talking more about the confusion and strange feelings you can get around people or maybe even just by yourself. I know that quite frequently I'll actually be sitting with friends and just wonder why I'm there with these people that I realy don't care about and there's realy no one I realy care that much about but myself which is rather selfish. You can get a realy odd frightening feeling of lonelyness and like there's no one there but you and you've already heard all ther is to say so... What you do? You can want to get out of your mind by alcohol or in my case cutting myself. But you always get over it and wonder what you were feeling so weird about. Until you get that feeling again.

Great song! | Reviewer: Great song! | 1/24/10

'it can be easier to consume alcohol then it is to connect to another human.' I just won't believe how not everyone could feel this way, all the time. But when I see people act, some of them actually convince me they might not need drinks to interact/connect. Maybe they're masters of disguise.

Meaningful Melody | Reviewer: Melanie | 4/1/08

Conor knows how to portray the feelings of guilt, indecision, and the sense of insecurity throughout this beautiful song. I think a lot of fans can connect to the struggle associated with alcohol and addiction. It's naturally human to find an escape that keeps you at peace and makes you forget.

In the Song it The Switch, Conor is able to explain how it can be easier to consume alcohol then it is to connect to another human. When sober there is always an inner battle going on inside ones body but once th alcohol hits your systemit silences the battle and puts all troubles at bay and how har it is to quit when you know that there is such an easy way out.

This song deffintely is a way to release yourself. Its easier to connect yourself to drugs nd alcohol then it is to another human. Conor shows the thinking process to a T. When you're sober there is alway an inner battle going on but once alcohol is in the bodies system it's as if the battle is at peace or at least easier to forget.

This is my favorite song ever. I love how in all of Conors songs he has suchh feeling and just completely gives himself into it. This song is amazing and lets me know I'm not alone.
