Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down to the causeway
Do they still LIVE there by the cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed up world
****
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river

... a walk down memory lane with the floyd... | Reviewer: Samir | 9/25/09
Boy, this song is really something... I've finished school and college, and am working my ass off at a job of my choice in a field of my choice, and one could say that I am close to having everything a guy my age could desire... But somehow listening to this song takes me back so many years, in a walk down memory lane... And makes me long for the one thing that each of us now would feel that we have squandered... Our childhood... It makes me feel how much more I could have done in those days when I was a kid, but alas, those years will never return... Just close your eyes with this song on, and the happiest moments of your youth will start running in front of you, like a movie, which u can enjoy, but never be a part of again...
All one is left with to say is "Ah! those were the days"...

Dave Gilmour again proving he is an absolute genius musician/songwriter. Not many songs have an impact on me when first listened to, but this one did. Soulful, emotional, mystical, beautiful and virtually surreal. Perfect tempo, perfect timing and perfect musical phrasing. The instruments blend into one another effortlessly. The lyrics so deep and meaningful. A true masterpiece...

This is my all time favourite song. The lyrics are amazing, so simple and brief yet so meaningful. The instrumentals are amazing. Everything is in harmony and set at a beautiful pace. High Hopes is a true masterpiece. I LOVE IT
This is my favorite song of all-time (of any artist), and I'm sure that anyone, no matter their interests, can appreciate this masterpiece. The lyrics have so many dimensions to them, but it is the instrumentals that seem to transport your soul to a place unknown to the human mind."
that's pretty much all i can say about this song
