High Hopes Lyrics - Pink Floyd
Review The Song (106)
Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down to the causeway
Do they still MEET there by the cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights OF that dreamed of world
****
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down to the causeway
Do they still MEET there by the cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights OF that dreamed of world
****
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever

Pink Floyd Despiration | Reviewer: Justa Fan | 4/6/13
RE: "English Despiration"
The song is Time off Dark Side..."Hanging on in quiet despiration is the English way" and although not totally original it's a good application of a great quote from Thoreau's Walden:
“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation...
High Hopes is the only song that gets close to touching the Waters Gilmour Floyd and I really enjoy it so well done Mr. Gilmour. With the kick start of Syd I believe that Waters, Gilmour, Wright and Mason were able to produce a sound that is truly unique and only could have manifested with those 4 individuals together; a perfect blend. I know from work experience that it is not until the tension producing element of a venture is removed that one realizes the quality the tension actually helped produce. Still, life is more than producing and should be enjoyed so when something has run its course and is no longer fun it may be right to let go and move in a totally new direction. I believe On an Island was a completely different idea for Gilmour and it worked splendidly, actually one of my favorite solo albums of all time. Gilmours timing and feel is second to none. Of course we all understand Waters giving us the Floyd we know and love but I'm begining to believe his mere presense even if negative helped bring the best out of the other members at that time. This may have actually been one of his greatest contributions. Fussy perfectionist have their place. I believe Floyd has over 10 masterpieces. The next best band may have 2-3 and most great bands don't even have 1 (just some hits).

I was listening the song for hundred times. I don't know how many times, but now is for the first time when I'm listening carefully - for the words. I'm dreaming to my youth (I'm 52 yrs old) and all my thoughts are going to my classmates who are not living any more, or even worse, are living in another country such Canada, Australia or USA (a sort of dead for me/us, the remaining in Romania).
Yes, the grass was greener ...

dad was on gis deathbed | Reviewer: seth wudel | 7/22/12
When my dad was alive, he asked mw to play dark side of the moon on his grave after he died....a few years later , when he was on his deathbwd , i did him one better, and purchased dark side of the moon again, and played it for him as he was dying.....well, theres mote.....i was really addicted to crack at the time, and it was something i couldnt not buy when i had money....b and when i had a chance on the weekend to visit him on gis deathbed i had 100 bucks or so in my pocket, and seven hours to wait for the bus, already jonesing on crack, and drugs all around me....would have been so easy to give him...a couple times i thought i eould just wait til the following weekenf but it would have been to late cuz he had already died....but for whatever reason, love defeated crack this time and i got to give my dad his dying wish.....when i was in the store purchasing dark side of the moon, high hopes was playing on the tv.....it was the first time i heard it, and it absolutely mesmerized me.....it was everything i was feeling about my dad dying....when i got back to plat dark side of the mpon for my dad, he open his eyes or say anything coherent, but i caught him kicking his feet to the music a little.....that was the last time i ever saw him, and all i xould think about the way home had the song high hopes playing in the background.....when i hear the song i think of my father and its by far my favorite pink floyd song

This is The Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/14/12
I saw the video of this song the first time I heard it.I was alone in my room, with excelent speakers, in the mood of getting "entranced" by Floyd. But I never expected what happened then.
The song engulfed me, and for seven minutes I forgot where I was or what I was doing. At the end of the song, I discovered myself crying and longing for a world I have never known.
You can take apart the video to break it down and analyze it -the deep semiotics involved, the psychological meanings-, but when mixed with the song, you're no longer hearing or seeing, but feeling the strange alchemy of this song.
It is sad, and it is strong; it is filled with melancholy and longing. It is a powerful song. I hear it everyday I can, and somehow I feel calm, and determined, and full of energy: like suddenly realizing I have a purpose I've forgotten for a long time. But then again, that's just me. Perhaps someone else out there might feel something similar to what I do.

Alles van deze song is geweldig, hoewel de woordenschat niet gemakkelijk is. Ik koester dit lied als een zeldzaam juweel in herinnering aan vervlogen tijden en overleden dierbaren.
Pink floyd " the merchants of melancohy " but they got it right and did it the " pink " way ! | Reviewer: sab2871 | 11/27/11
Yes High Hopes is in a sure way a " tear jerker " song ! Ofcourse, not in some corny way but it is " deep " and so meaningful that its melancholy chant , rythm and lyics invoke " thoughs " of past regrets , challenges , love and ultimately " life ". The entire song is so " haunting " and " weighty " that one would say " who the hell wants to listen to such downer music ! However, as others have said Pink Floyd is addictive almost " doping " but thats the style of 5 men , all of British desent who have grown up in a society where wars , political strife, invasions and cultural swings imprinted , an already " Germanic / Celtic people with a dry , reserved yet quick witted personality that is " English desperation " as is mentioned in one of their songs ( can't recall ). Sorry for the history lesson but thats the way I see it . The band met at cambridge university and with the exception of David Gilmore ( friend of Syd ) the others came from families of Aristocracy / Society . So for the most part it seems like their final song to mark their love , admiration and sadness over the guy that created Floyd , steared its infant days but continued to have an impact on the band through its life as it went thru it 3 phases. Not to mention the way Syd left the band and the morbid life he lead in a mental institution. But again the song airs of English melancohly and is trance like . But who hasn't gone through downs in their life ? Its really a very serious song as really most of their songs are so relevant to life reflecting pessimism from optimistic let downs. Just typing about how I view " High Hopes " and Floyd is uplifting but no sooner I replay the song in my head the melancohly thoughs return. Its a timeless song and " haunting ". Regardless, of their tendency to produce this mood of progressive rock music they still manage to blend suchlyrics with the solid rythm of Nick Mason ( drums ) , Rick wrights surrounding Keyboards and Gilmore's lingering chords and solo. Sorry to repeat myself but its all so " haunting " its hard not to dwell into the truth and realism of the song no matter how depressing and reminding it is .

If you have to defend your music to people around you, your not in that strong of a point. I'm sorry to say that.
I love this song. It says to me what I fucked up as a youngter. And the thing that I yearn.
Mesmerizing! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/6/11
I am a long time Floyd fan(longer than I care to admit). I have had to defend their music to some of my friends and family who see their music as too melancholy. I have to admit that if you take the lyrics at face value you could view their music that way. The way I feel about the band is that their music albeit melancholy touches a chord in the very depth of your soul that you can realate to your own life. I saw them in concert in 1994 while they were touring promoting Division Bell. I went with family and friends, including my husband and 8 year old son. He was so mesmerized by the music that to this day he is one of their greatest fans, and it is one of his fondest memories, as it is one of mine. We will never again see them live, one of the greatest rock groups of all time, and this is one of my favorite songs by Floyd, the best on the entire album.
Best Ever | Reviewer: Kazi Riasat Alve | 5/7/11
Almost everyday I'm listening to this song from last 7-8 years but still I can't get rid of it's addiction. A real masterpiece created by David Gilmour and obviously one of the best ever songs human ever made. Its not a song, its a piece of art I have to say.
sweet memories | Reviewer: joy | 3/17/11
To me this is the best complete composition ever made by any rock band obviously with comfortably numb..this is a kind of song you can listen to everytime specislly the sliding guitar part..that was really awesome,it can bring a heavenly feeling when you hear this track..david,nick and richard are the god,i also liked the royal albert hall version where john carin played the slider guitar with gilmour..i came to know that gilmour wrote this song for his girlfriend,so keep rocking..
