hey
been trying to meet you
mmmmmm hmmmmm
hey
must be a devil between us
or whores in my head
whores at my door
whore in my bed
but hey
where
have you
been
if you go i will surely die
we're chained
we're chained
we're chained
we're chained
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
uh said the man to the lady
mmmmmm hmmmm
uh said the lady to the man she adored
and the whores like a choir
go uh all night
and mary ain't you tired of this
uh
is
the
sound
that THE MOTHER MAKES WHEN HER BABY breaks
we're chained
we're chained
we're chained
we're chained
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)
we're chained (chained)

Review about Hey Hey by the Pixies | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/28/09
Two people whether they have met or not, are so far apart but at the same time they are bonded together by unknown forces. But then tragedy strikes. Even if one of the two dies, they are still bonded and chained and linked together. They have this connection that cannot be explained.
Okay, so here's what I think: It says: Hey I've been trying to meet you...there's a devil between us. Okay, clearly something is keeping them apart must be the inability to commit-- whores must refer to addiction such as drug addiction sex addiction or whatever. We're chained refers to the inability to keep away from each other although there is a lack of commitment, they just keep coming back to each other. While with someone else, the man looks at the lady he's having sex with and has a flashback to his true love, the sound a mother makes when her baby breaks, baby probably means something else, whether it's actually a baby or not, I think it refers to whining or moaning. That's just my opinion it may not be right, but eh...oh well.

my favorite pixies song. i love the melodic guitar riff that reoccurs in the the song. Black's sweet vocals that shift from musical to rough barks and Deal's echoing chorus both send chills down my spine. I think basically everyone above got the meaning right
I agree that the song is pretty straight forward, but does require some thought. I think it there is a man who seeks love, but he does run into a lot of whores. He does find the woman he loves ("where have you been? if you go i will surely die"), and is "chained" to her, by love and later decides to have a baby ("uh is the sound that THE MOTHER MAKES WHEN HER BABY breaks." I know that when her water breaks, the baby is coming, so I figure when the baby breaks, it's born) Maybe the whole "... the whores like a choir go uh all night and mary ain't you tired of this" is referring to meaningless sex. So they decided to have something better (a baby).

This song's meaning is not at all complicated--it's pretty straight forward. A couple are "chained" together by a child. The man has an addiction to prostitutes (whores). Out of frustration the "mother" kills (breaks) her "baby". Shocking yes, but the Pixies' themes usually are.

the first reviwer nailed it. its intense....and we don't know why. knowing what the lyrics mean or in what context this song was created in wont make it go away. and thats what we want when we hear this song. we want that longing to just go away. but it wont, because its a part of us that we'll always have, like that longing we first experienced for raw sexual desire...not love.
It's about life. Sexual desire, the basics of sex, and the realities of sex - the underlying reasons we do it, ie: procreation. There's no mystical romance - we are all simply "chained' to the short-lived pleasures of sexual ecstasy, and Aren't you tired of it? (addresseed to "Mary)

in my p.o.v. i believe that its about a guy who is trying to find his true love and they are chained together thru their fate and theyre destined to b together but he cant find her and there are whores every where keeping them apart. and he is jus having sex for the hell of things but he is tired of this pointless sex.
or that he is with a girl but their relationship is ending and they had sumthing good and they are used to it but there is no more love between them so they are jus having sex. and he says " mary aren't u tired" as in tired of lying to ourselves about were this relationship is going.

This song is amazing. I get the feeling its about two lost people finding each other through all the b.s and garbage.

hey, is simple but pure. Its meaning is complex, but you don't have to understand it to feel its intensity and know exactly the emtion it is portraying...
