we are chained | Reviewer: Mia | 2/26/12

I believe this song is about a love triangle. The guy is longing, desperately yearning for a woman he can't have (the lady); he's in love with her but outside forces (must be a devil between us) prevent them from being together, he's chained to her emotionally because he loves her (and possibly she loves him back) and he wants to be with her but he can't. On the other hand, he's chained to some other woman through a baby, he doesn't love her but here he's chained to her and possibly married to her because of the baby so there's pain all around. Uh! could be the sound of pain.

this song is about a couple who love each other more than anything , but have completely fkd their relationship up and cant fix it. the devil is used as a metaphorical figure in the song and has manipulated the couple with whores ,sex and pleasure and is the reason for all the wrong doing on both parts. They are chained no matter what and now can not escape their love for one another .. The devil in the song causes all the bad sources of pleasure eg : the whores in his bed and his head - the devil put them there hypothetically. still even tho the whores will still and always exist and the man cant help this , he will still be chained with that woman he still loves no matter what. 'Mary aint you tired of this uh uh? all night and the whores like a choir all night uh uh ' they meet up every time ' the couple ' for the same reason 'sex' just like the he does with the whores and the experience sounds the same with both the whores and the woman he loves, but its very different and is painful and sad as he cant escape the love he feels for that woman - 'uh is the sound that mother makes when the baby breaks ' . to sum it up the so called devil put a spell on a couple in love - where they can be together and love each other but they will never be truly happy. no matter how unhappy they are , or how much they hate , cheat and hurt each other they will always come back to one another. the man also admits to all the sleeping around , so the woman knows about the whores every night. ders no way out of it , and the situation had gotten so bad that they cant make the relationship happy or pure ever again. the fact that the love is so strong they cant escape it either . either way it is a no win situation on both parts. Its quite a sad song , but goes to show how strong and painful love can really be.

I think it´s about a man that loves a woman, but he is afraid, of love, of showing his feelings to the woman, that she will leave him like everybody else. That´s the devil.
He tries to fight he´s feelings so he sleeps with whores, but he can´t forget her. They are chained.
He knowes she is tired of him sleeping with all the other women, so he let her go. That´s the sound that the mother makes when her baby breaks, that´s also the sound of pain.

Have any of you read the 991/2 book on Doolittle? This song is about the perversion of modern society relative to our relationships. The sound 'the mother makes when the baby breaks' is the very same she is making during sex. I believe Charles Thompson refers to it as the "desecration of the birth canal". Haha. Feelings of pure love muddled a bit by our primal sexual urges, and Black Francis isn't happy. Maybe it's a dated concept, but look at the countless biblical references in Pixies songs. The start of all that glorious 90's dirge was once a good Christian boy.

I think its about a womanizing man, who sleeps with women to fill the emptiness he feels. He finally gets his latest conquest, then he feels complete whilst their having sex, so the 'chained' in this instance feels like a good thing to him! I think the music next is the sex.......After sex in the next verse he snaps back into his womanizing mode with a 'uh' whearas the woman is now the one making the hmmmmm mmmmm noises as she thinks she's in love, but the man is just hearing the same 'uh' noises after everytime he has sex!! This time however, the woman becomes pregnant, then has his baby. The man didnt plan for this and didnt love her but is now 'chained' to her in a different way! The music this time is playing out the rest of their lives!......Just my take on the song!!

seems too many of you are reading these lyrics too literally... the song deals with longing, this man is in love with someone he can't be with. Despite trying to drown it out with meaningless sex he still cant escape how he really feels. The sound the mother makes when her baby breaks? That's pain and anguish, there's no one getting born or murdered here, this band's got other songs for that.

I think he has a love but she is over him or tired of him or just som reason they just aren't workin out and he's sayin that if she leaves that he will have sex without love n he's bound to her n their connection but never feels it again

Two people whether they have met or not, are so far apart but at the same time they are bonded together by unknown forces. But then tragedy strikes. Even if one of the two dies, they are still bonded and chained and linked together. They have this connection that cannot be explained.

Hey | Reviewer: Sarai | 8/26/09

Okay, so here's what I think: It says: Hey I've been trying to meet you...there's a devil between us. Okay, clearly something is keeping them apart must be the inability to commit-- whores must refer to addiction such as drug addiction sex addiction or whatever. We're chained refers to the inability to keep away from each other although there is a lack of commitment, they just keep coming back to each other. While with someone else, the man looks at the lady he's having sex with and has a flashback to his true love, the sound a mother makes when her baby breaks, baby probably means something else, whether it's actually a baby or not, I think it refers to whining or moaning. That's just my opinion it may not be right, but eh...oh well.

my favorite pixies song. i love the melodic guitar riff that reoccurs in the the song. Black's sweet vocals that shift from musical to rough barks and Deal's echoing chorus both send chills down my spine. I think basically everyone above got the meaning right

A new light... | Reviewer: Jeremy | 3/5/09

I agree that the song is pretty straight forward, but does require some thought. I think it there is a man who seeks love, but he does run into a lot of whores. He does find the woman he loves ("where have you been? if you go i will surely die"), and is "chained" to her, by love and later decides to have a baby ("uh is the sound that THE MOTHER MAKES WHEN HER BABY breaks." I know that when her water breaks, the baby is coming, so I figure when the baby breaks, it's born) Maybe the whole "... the whores like a choir go uh all night and mary ain't you tired of this" is referring to meaningless sex. So they decided to have something better (a baby).

Looking too deep into it... | Reviewer: Ceelos | 2/20/09

This song's meaning is not at all complicated--it's pretty straight forward. A couple are "chained" together by a child. The man has an addiction to prostitutes (whores). Out of frustration the "mother" kills (breaks) her "baby". Shocking yes, but the Pixies' themes usually are.

the first reviwer nailed it. its intense....and we don't know why. knowing what the lyrics mean or in what context this song was created in wont make it go away. and thats what we want when we hear this song. we want that longing to just go away. but it wont, because its a part of us that we'll always have, like that longing we first experienced for raw sexual desire...not love.

life ... | Reviewer: tory | 3/19/08

It's about life. Sexual desire, the basics of sex, and the realities of sex - the underlying reasons we do it, ie: procreation. There's no mystical romance - we are all simply "chained' to the short-lived pleasures of sexual ecstasy, and Aren't you tired of it? (addresseed to "Mary)

um yea hey? | Reviewer: didlittle | 3/13/08

in my p.o.v. i believe that its about a guy who is trying to find his true love and they are chained together thru their fate and theyre destined to b together but he cant find her and there are whores every where keeping them apart. and he is jus having sex for the hell of things but he is tired of this pointless sex.
or that he is with a girl but their relationship is ending and they had sumthing good and they are used to it but there is no more love between them so they are jus having sex. and he says " mary aren't u tired" as in tired of lying to ourselves about were this relationship is going.
