Review The Song (29)Print the Lyrics
This party is old and uninviting.
Participants all in black and white.
You enter in full-blown technicolor.
Nothing is the same after tonight.

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind,
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here.

Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.

You enter and close the door behind you.
Now show me the world as seen from the stars.
If only the lights would dim a little,
I'm wary of eyes upon my scars.

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind,
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here.

Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.

Pink tractorbeam into your incision
Head spinning as free as Dervish's whirl
I came here expecting next to nothing
So thank you for being "that" kind of girl.

That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.

Review about Here in My Room

Don't overanalyze. | Reviewer: Hayden | 8/19/09

First off, I agree that the song is amazing and that Boyde is a genius.
That tidbit aside, I wanna say that some people are looking too deeply into this.
This song is very obviously about sex or "making love", hence the "your love is a verb" line.

The second verse clearly describes a confident woman seducing a less confident or self conscious man. That verse cannot possibly be about anything but the act of having sex.

The last verse is not only clearly about the act of sex as well, but it's even more graphic in its imagery.
"Pink tractor beam into your incision..." What else can that be about other than penetration?
"I came here expecting next to nothing, so thank you for being "that kind of girl." When he says "here", it could mean the party (Yes, I do think that the reference to a party is at least in part very literal) or he came to a particular situation (being alone with the girl in his room, perhaps) "expecting next to nothing." How many of us have never been in a similar situation, where we go to a place or meet with someone, and we really have no expectations or even bad expectations, but then something wonderful happens? In this case, he got laid. Maybe it was more than "getting laid" in the grander scheme of things. Maybe it was amazing love making. Maybe it was transcending, but at the end of the day, it was the act of having sex or making love.

But of course, we can all make our own interpretations for music. That's the beauty of art, the fact that we all make it what we want it to be. I just think that sometimes things are looked into more deeply than intended. There's obvious beauty and intensity and passion in describing a night or love making? I feel like some people trivializing such experiences when they say that the song cant possibly be this shallow in its meaning. I think that this is exactly what the song is about and I don't think that it's at all shallow. There is beauty in simplicity. Less is more. I can think of 100 more clichés, but you guys the point.

this song is many things, but not empty!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/21/09

"Love is a verb" is brilliant. It means that the love that we ALL are at the very core of our being finally has a way to express itself! This girl is not just f*cking him, she's ENLIGHTENING him!!! "the party old and univiting black and white" part is a metaphor for somebody sleep-walking, going through the motions of life on autopilot. She enters in full blown techincolor, (alive! awake! full of presence truth wisdom and of course Love!) and that Love is about to overflow, and be EXPRESSED with him!! He can now see the world as "from the stars", from the ONE HEART and ONE MIND, from a UNIVERSAL standpoint. he is forever changed. There is no going back, and even if that old "world-were" (the way he saw things previously) was to fall apart, he wouldn't change a thing because he is now ALIVE and AWAKE and realizes that everything else but that LOVE was all just an illusion. So he's okay with all of it just blowing away back to the "FICTION" from where it came. He now knows the TRUTH which is LOVE. (and again I am not speaking of Romantic love, but rather bob marley's kind of ONELOVE)So he say's "Thank you for being 'that' kind of girl" (the kind who sees through the illusion and by fully being and expressing her self aka,Love -since we all ARE love- allows others to see clearly as well!) This is a DEEP DEEP song. definitely not just about Sex!!! not by any means <3

i hope i'm wrong..this song is too good to be so empty. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/18/09

the fact that he repeatedly refers to love as a verb means that it is not a feeling, just a word to describe the action of having sex. it proves there is nothing behind it, that there is no feeling. the sex may be phenomenal, but it is not everlasting love. maybe it changed him by giving him a different perspective on women/sex/life, but one can never know. this song has just always meant so much more to me. i want someone to prove this wrong and save my fragile heart from the harsh interpretation of my mind. nevertheless, i can rest well knowing that boyd is a true poet, for he can take a casual encounter and turn it into something beautiful.

love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/28/09

i think there is a big difference between making love and sex. making love is commmonly reffered to in music, and is only a horrible thing when poeple make it that. these lyrics are much deeper than people realize. brandon boyde is a genious.

Incubus is fiction-worthy | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/26/09

"Pink tractorbeam into your incision,".. the guy definitely sings about intercourse. everything else can have as subjective of a meaning as any.

Personally, I'm into these lyrics "If the world were to fall apart in a fiction-worthy wind, I wouldn't change a thing," leaving "now that you're here" out; that's optional. I love Incubus.

now love is a verb... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/4/09

It doesn't really mean a physical action, so much as "love is a verb" means more that love has surpassed being a feeling, it's something more, its and action, a pure emotion, flowing in and out of you, a living breathing thing.

awesum song | Reviewer: laura | 3/24/09

I agree with all of you who say this song is not only about the sex, because its really not... "Nothing is the same after tonight" is deff not talking about some random hookup, besides the "party" thing doesnt necessarily mean a PARTY it could also mean like the life his living thats gettin "old and uninviting" and then the girl comes and changes all his world around.

What it means. | Reviewer: Chris | 2/26/09

There are subtle hints in this song that allude to a meaning a bit different meaning than a party hook-up.

From what I gather, the song is about a guy who has been hurt - physically or emotionally, and hasn't found love. Then when he sees this girl, who treats him differently, he feels more complete, wishes that things would never change.

"This party is old and uninviting
Participants all in black and white.
You enter in full blown technicolor
Nothing is the same after tonight."

Everyone is the same. But when he sees her, he sees something special about her.

"You enter and close the door behind you
Now show me the world as seen from the stars.
If only the lights would dim a little,
I'm wary of eyes upon my scars"

Literally pertaining to the fact that he has been scarred before. He's self-of that fact, but as the next paragraph will show, she's different. The fact that the feeling shared between them is described as "showing them the world seen from the stars" obviously means that it is something truly extraordinaire and special.

"I came here expecting next to nothing
So thank you for being that kind of girl."

He went expecting not to find this significant other, this person who seems him for what he is under his scarred self. Hence, "thank you for being that kind of girl." He certainly is not referring to "that kind of girl" that puts out.

Not saying that it isn't about sex, "pink tractor beam into your incision" is a pretty clear illusion to sex, but obviously the song is about more than them having sex, it's about love.

"Head spinning as free as Dervishs' whirl"
I'd say this would be an excellent way to describe intimacy with someone you're really connected with.
Again, I can neither confirm nor deny that this is Incubus' true meaning to the song, but I like to think that this is what it's about.

A life changing song | Reviewer: Apurva | 2/23/09

I heard it and I was spellbound. It still baffles me how a song can reach this utmost perfection. Its music and its lyrics..so hauntingly beautiful. They create an ambiance and image that go beyond the song itself. I wrote a story after listening to this the whole night...please do see it to see if the song signifies the same to you. http://brooderspneumonia.blogspot.com/2009/02/he-gazed-out-into-night-his-mind.html

Greatest track on the album | Reviewer: Derek Michael | 2/18/09

I flicked through the tracks on this album looking for something to grab me and when this song came on I just sat there wide eyed and listened. Definitely the most beautiful song I have ever heard of theirs, and although it references sex, it takes a more poetic approach rather than blunt, and gives the experience from the song a more meaningful value and not just a simple forgettable one night stand. The melody and instrumentation of this song is what I crave for from music. I have my own site up at http://www.derek-michael.com if anyone is interested in checking it out. My music leans more in the direction of this song instrumentally speaking. Beautiful song...
