Heart - Shaped Box Lyrics

Performed by Nirvana
Review The Song (214)

She eyes me like a pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your Heart Shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black

Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
hey
wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

...your advice

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on Angel Hair and babys breath
Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
...Your advice

*SOLO*

She has me like a pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your Heart-Shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could Eat your cancer when you turn black

Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
hey!
wait!

Meaning or no meaning? | Reviewer: Caligula | 5/16/12

One problem with undestanding lyrics of your idol is that everything is considered a masterpiece. To me as a writer the lyrics of "Heart Shaped Box" seem lazy:

Black/back rhyme repeats too many times for it to be really good writing.

"She eyes me like a pisces when I am weak"
"She has me like a pisces when I am weak"

C'moon... he needed to get the song finished but had only one verse. So he went with it.

Certainly these lines are his ideas but not too coherent nor thought out.

Who needs wants know the deep meanings behind the music? Just listen to the beauty and the magic of the music. Kurt wouldn't want people phsyco analysing everything he writes. What about 'umbilical noose', what is that supposed to signify?

Art | Reviewer: Dobravko Savićević | 4/3/12

Art is meant to be analysed as well as enjoyed. That is part of the beauty of it. Cobain's lyrics have great meaning, even if he never intended them too, that is why they are great lyrics. Poe's words sounded nice, but it was the layers of meaning that made his work the finest of it's kind. All songwriters use words and phrases they like, but the reasons for them liking such things are worth analysing. Some of you believe thinking about music is wrong. Why? Because you think it is cool? Such an attitude explains the popularity of club music.

I'm sure Kurt was awesome. But that doesn't mean EVERY SINGLE one of his songs had some deep meaning. Me, and alot of others, just write what we think sounds awesome... Whether is has meaning or not.

It's obvious this isn't about heroin... | Reviewer: TheHatterMostMad | 1/14/12

"Forever in debt to your priceless advice"

Since when does heroin give advice? She became controlling, always criticizing him and his music. Nothing was good enough. It was never enough. Most of his songs are about his feelings for the women in his life. "Heart Shaped Box" is no different. Look at "All Apologies" - Lyrics: "I'm married! Buried!" Look at "You Know You're Right" - "Nothing really bothers her - She just wants to love herself".

He found that Courtney was turning the love he had for her against him. He found that nothing he did was ever going to be good enough for her. His love for her was turning into self loathing. In the end, he only wanted to escape, since the only thing he wanted in life (a happy family) was going to be impossible.

Music was how he dealt with that pain. Suicide (or murder...) was the end result.

sad respect | Reviewer: bubble | 11/5/11

Cobain was heroin addicted and story about that is in every his song. He was in "spellbound cycle" from which there is no way out...When good, intelligent people get in that situation, they are crashed and torn between heroin and real life and like every artist he tried to present his feelings like metaphor so everyone can find themselves in his words............................

Calm down | Reviewer: Anonymus | 10/10/11

People, first of all, respect each other. Everyone here has an opinion that should be respected, not necesarilly followed. We don't know Kurt, we never will. Everyone here can say anything about the lyrics, with or without saying anything about Kurt's bio. We can't tell if he lied somethings in it. So please, calm down, see the lyrics, interpret them the way you want to, and respect the other people's way of interpreting them, ok? And enjoy the music. It's one of the last things we still have of beauty in this world.

this is bullsh*t | Reviewer: scroty mc bogger balls | 9/10/11

stfu children | Reviewer: stfu | 9/9/11

most of you probally werent even alive or done shitting in your diapers when kurt cobain died yet you all talk like you knew him or something none of you know who he was or how he thought so stfu and listen to the song , music was ment to be enjoyed not dissected and given false meaning by ignorant children, also take any given song with abstract lyrics have 20 ppl listen to it , your most likely gonna have 20 different interpetations of its meaning.

My humble opinion | Reviewer: Kacie | 9/2/11

First off, to the anonymous person right below me, Courtney really did gve Kurt a heart shaped box, I read that in a bio on Kurt. (Heavier Than Heaven)
Aside from this, the lyrical meaning throughout the song can be interpreted in many ways. That's the magical thing about music. I think Kurt may have been conveying pieces of his relationship with Courtney, however we will never know the true meaning of this song will we? In a way it's even more meaningful, not directly being told the meaning because whatever interpretation we make becomes closer to us.

Not even close | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/30/11

You guys making claims that you know what this song is about is ridiculous, you say Courtney sent Kurt an actual heart shaped box? The original song title was Heart Shaped Coffin. I'm not trying to be smart or pretend to know everything, but you guys don't know what this is about and neither do I.

Don't be so ignorant 3 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/26/11

My point is, if you're a true fan you'd know this songhas a deep meaning to his and courtneys relationship. Just because some lyrics sound strange, they make so much sense. Kurts that friend whos good at hiding his feelings, just because he says hes ok. You guys aren't true fans if you can't figure that out. Just read the damn lyrics.

Don't be so Ignorant 2 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/26/11

Look at the Lyrics,"I've been locked into your heart shaped box, for weeks" Self explanatory. "Meat eating orchards forgive no one just yet" Obviously woman... "Broken hymen of your highness, i'm left black" Just look at it.. "I wish i could eat your cancer when you turn black" He would do anything for her, once again, supports my other interpretation, this is a love/heartbreak song, some other people see other things but i'm sure this is what Kurt was writing. Prob cause Courtney, some of the things he did made her mad, shes the meat eating orchid!

Don't be so Ignorant | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/26/11

Just because Kurt Cobain didn't want people to relate to him, this song has meaning.. So obvious, he had issues obviously, it's no different than when a friend says nothings wrong, or your family. You can't just go, ooh ok, he's ok. It's true what they say, "ignorance is bliss". Dumb people believe Kurts words. I shouldn't have to explain this damn song, i'm sure someone has

hmm. | Reviewer: James | 8/22/11

I think it's silly of people believing the things a person like Kurt Cobain says; just because he says his lyrics don't mean anything, doesn't mean they don't. Perhaps he's just embarrassed about what they actually do mean. There are so many different layers to people, nobody really knows anybody.
