He Didn't Have To Be Lyrics
Performed by Brad PaisleyReview The Song (4)
When a single mom goes out on a date with somebody new
It always winds up being more like a job interview
My momma used to wonder if she'd ever meet someone
Who wouldn't find out about me and then turn around and run
I met the man I call my dad when I was five years old
He took my mom out to a movie and for once I got to go
A few months later I remember lying there in bed
I overheard him pop the question and prayed that she'd say yes
And then all of a sudden
Oh, it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing
To a family
Lookin' back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be
I met the girl that's now my wife about three years ago
We had the perfect marriage but we wanted somethin' more
Now here I stand surrounded by our family and friends
Crowded 'round the nursery window as they bring the baby in
And now all of a sudden
It seemed so strange to me
How we've gone from something's missing
To a family
Lookin' through the glass I think about the man
That's standin' next to me
And I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be
Lookin' back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be
Yeah, I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be
Because he didn't have to be
You know he didn't have to be

I think he knew my dad! | Reviewer: Shupaula | 4/17/2008
This song descibes my dad to perfection! I was 4yrs old when my mom married "my dad". I was 44yrs old when "my dad" passed away. Not one time in 40 years did he ever call me his step-daughter, I was always HIS daughter. Thank you Brad Paisley for the song. THANK YOU DAD for the love.
Amazing songwriting | Reviewer: Matt Stambach | 5/10/2007
The lyrics in this song are so magical and special. The situation he refers too has not been in direct contact with myself but when i put it on i sing my heart away almost to tears. It is a truely amazing song. i wish everyone else could hear it
It touched me too... | Reviewer: Nicole | 4/16/2007
I know that this is basically a 'guy' song, but it touched me too. I have a stepfather and not a day goes by that I don't think about this song and apply it to him. What happened to me is proof that there are still good men out there.
Heard again on Home Makeover | Reviewer: Rich | 12/24/2006
Tonight, on a rerun of Extreme Home Makeover, they aired a short clip of Brad Paisley singing this song. As a former foster dad to six boys, it was a delight to meet the boys who would choose me for their dad, whether for a few months or several years. I remember a line from a crippled foster boy in an old black and white movie: "You pity me, but I'm lucky. I got to choose my parents."
