Review The Song (8)Print the Lyrics
Stay with me a while,
Rise above the vile.
Name my final rest,
Poured into my chest.

Into the orchard i walk peering way past the gate.
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait.
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead.
Halo of death, all i see is departure.
Mourner's lament but it's me who's to martyr.

Pledge yourself to me ,
Never leave me be,
Sweat breaks on my brow,
Given time ends now.

Into the orchard i walk peering way past the gate.
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait.
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead.
Halo of death, all i see is departure.
Mourner's lament but it's me who's to martyr.

Spirit painted sin,
Embers neath my skin,
Veiled in pale embrace,
Reached and touched my face.

Into the orchard i walk peering way past the gate.
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait.
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead.
(Release your grip)
Halo of death, all i see is departure.
(and let me go)
Mourner's lament but it's me who's to martyr.
(into the night)

Review about Harvest

The song is about a suicide. Into the orchard i walk peering way past the gates. (it wasn't his time yet)
wilted scenes for us who couldnt wait. (in many religions and cultures it is believed that a suicide is a waster of the most precious thing ever given to him/her - life - and therefore goes to hell or some place similar to what the christians call hell.)
Name my final rest (choose your own fate)
Poured into my chest. (perhaps the means of doing it, or a metaphor for completely giving in to death)

This is also the reason why he feels embers beneath his skin.

What it boils down to is he doesn't want to face the fury of hell all by himself, and these are his last breaths before he dies.

- On a side note

There is a possibility that he has been sick and ends his life beforehand, but is not given entrance to heaven.

Strong lyrics, soft singing, beautiful music | Reviewer: Op-E-Th-I-An | 1/19/09

Opeth are lyrical gods!!!
I understand this song like this:
The man sings to his beloved, while he's near his last breath, and this is like a comparison to his feelings at the moment for his beloved, what he sees at the moment, and his dying wish: he wishes the never-ending love from his beloved to stay never-ending, even when he goes, rather unwillingly, cheers

Embers 'neath my skin | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/22/08

From my perspective as a guitarist/vocalist, every time you play music before the world it feels like you're giving up your life to them, and sometimes the thought makes you nervous to the point where it feels like burning beneath your skin, yet your hands seem to get so cold..

And the only thing that brings back that feeling of warmth and soul inside is the embrace of the one who you most intimately love.

Harvest = Amazing | Reviewer: Raven | 8/29/08

This song has a lot of meanings but I think personaly it could be about someone who had killed themselves bc it says "Into the orchard i walk peering way past the gate. Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait." That strikes me as he's saying, these people couldn't wait to die and so its not gonna be the same as people who could wait for their time. and then when he's talking about the "Spirit painted sin, Embers neath my skin,Veiled in pale embrace, Reached and touched my face." He's (I think) talking about hell "ambers neath my skin"

and then this could be talking about death or the devil embracing him in hell "vailed in pale embarce, reached and touched my face"

Or something like that.

just cant get enough of it! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/7/07

Amazing song! Opeth are lyrical gods when it comes to describing an emotion and no doubts they made it pretty clear in this song...and I love their acoustical playing, so unorthodox but beautiful!

Pledge yourself to me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/15/07

This song is written, to my perspective, a man who has entered the gates of death or will enter (this could mean emotional or literal), he says he's the martyr, he doesn't want to leave. My beloved sent me this song, and it strikes me deeply. HE is one who'd send this to me and would mean every word. Our love is so hard. We are so far apart and he's asking me to be his, though different states.

Pledge yourself to me ,
Never leave me be,
Sweat breaks on my brow,
Given time ends now.

This could mean he's already dead emotionally, but still wants me to be with him. Or the other perspective is that the man in the song is dead, and wants his love to continue to pledge her love to him.

The song is very romantic when you listen to the song it self, entwined with unwillingness to die, and longing.

Idk. what do you think?

Quite a powerful song. It's a bit hard to decipher at first, but after a second glance, it seems as though the lyrics were written by someone about to die (quite unwillingly too).
