The Clash Guns of Brixton Lyrics

Last updated: 05/18/2012 11:00:00 AM

When they kick out your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun

When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting in death row

You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, Guns of Brixton

The money feels good
And your life you like it well
But surely your time will come
As in heaven, as in hell

You see, he feels like Ivan
BORN under the Brixton sun
His game is called survivin'
At the end of the harder they come

You know it means no mercy
They caught him with a gun
No need for the Black Maria
Goodbye to the Brixton sun

You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh-the guns of Brixton

When they kick out your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun

You can crush us
You can bruise us
And even shoot us
But oh- the guns of Brixton

Shot down on the pavement
Waiting in death row
His game was survivin'
As in heaven as in hell

You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton

as on old ex bootgirl back in the early '80s many of the clash songs were/are anthemic,a lot of us were from hidious backgrounds and often we were no respecters of caution needless to say it raised the ugly head of the law and yes they got sick of us, hey bring on the dogs ,the battons and the cells if they caught us.we really did cause alot of shit.we lived .we breathed it,were homeless and always suspected...the clash wrote and performed this.boy did we get shitfaced to it.they helped make my midteens absolutely memorable...oi!oi!oi!

brixton is always aorund | Reviewer: Drummax | 3/31/12

Police in italy did even worst in genova years ago, injuring all peaceful people who were only sleeping.
Blood everywhere, people crying, devastated, and false cloues placed by specific guys of the Secret Services in some corner of the place. Today there is a movie on that ( called " DIAZ " ).

That night the line of bass of Paul Simonon was strongly heared everywhere.

Never listened or played enough. Long live to Clash.

As Tough as it needs to be | Reviewer: Duchess | 4/26/11

Much as I love most of the Clash's songs, this one just DOES something to me. It makes me think of cops REALLY kicking down doors, for no reason and that question that really does face anybody to whom that happens. It's harsh and that's good. The music matches if perfectly. I think of the 60's protests, like Chicago in'68 or Kent State in '70 and think: What the F*** are people letting happen now? We NEED the Clash spirit more now than ever.

I think this is more about the situation (then, and now also) in Brixton in South London, which is an underprivileged area and does not have the best reputation, rather than being about martial law or the government. There is a big gang culture in these places and always has been. Paul Simonon spent some of his childhood there.

a fantastic song | Reviewer: Sam Fleisher | 8/4/08

Everything in this song perfectly fits. Lyricaly it is such a powerful song about standing up for your self when martial law is declared. The bass line is so great, and everything just fits together so well.

Nouvelle Vague's cover of the song is incredible. Haunting and addicting. Look for it on

This song can never be overplayed | Reviewer: Maso | 10/23/07

I completely disagree with the Anonymous reviewer who posted on 7/24/2007. 'Guns Of Brixton' can never be played enough. The music, the lyrics and the melody... everything is spot on.

WOW | Reviewer: toni | 8/12/07

im part of a youth music project ,one day the tutor came in and said we should do a cover of this song.I had never heard the song before, but when I did I thought it was amazing ,long live the clash!

I give it a 5 out of 5 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/24/07

Unfortunately this songs is over played too much. But every song gets old.

But it is about the government just arresting everybody and killing them. and if they dont fight back nothing is gonna change and the government is gonna come after you next.

Excellent song.
I would consider it rival to white riot.
Possibly London Calling.
You know Pete Doherty and Carl Barat covered the song when the police burst in to a gig at their house.
You MUST listen to it.

SIMO IS THE BEST!!! | Reviewer: Sid the Vicious | 12/8/06

This is one of the greatest songs by the Clash that exists! It's off London Calling, so that means it's even better. All the songs on that album are gems, and this is clearly one of them!! The bassist, Paul Simonon wrote this one, and obviously he did a good job. This has got a great beat, great imagery, and soooo badass... This song will give you the chills- it's that great. Cheack it out! You won't believe you hadn't sooner!!

OHHHHHHH, GUNS OF BRIXTON~ | Reviewer: Avi | 9/2/05
