Greatest Love Of All Lyrics - Whitney Houston
Review The Song (62)
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me
[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me
[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all

Find your strength in love

"The Greatest Love of All" is a song written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed and originally recorded by George Benson for the 1977 Muhammad Ali biopic The Greatest. The song was later popularized by Whitney Houston. Creed wrote the lyrics in the midst of her struggle with breast cancer. The words describe her feelings about coping with great challenges that one must face in life, being strong during those challenges whether you succeed or fail, and passing that strength on to children to carry with them into their adult lives. Creed eventually succumbed to the disease in April 1986 at the age of 36; at the time her song was an international hit by Whitney Houston.
The song received critical acclaim and became a big hit, topping the charts in Australia, Canada and the US, while reaching the top 20 in most countries, including Italy, Sweden and UK. It remains her third biggest US hit, after "I Will Always Love You" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)". All three songs, in order of their former popularity, re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart, after Houston's death, debuting the same week at numbers 7, 35 and 41, respectively, giving Houston three posthumous chart hits. Christian/Gospel/Inspiration | Reviewer: Bud | 4/25/13
I am into those three types of music at the moment as I work at a Christian radio station in Illinois. I play mainly Southern Gospel and Contemporary Christian "on-air".
But, maybe one of these days, I will have free range and include the Inspirational portion "into the mix", as well; anything from "Amazing Grace"(a capella) by Judy Collins to "We Are the World" to "Wind Beneath My Wings", "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics, "River of Dreams" by Billy Joel, and "The Greatest Love of All", among others mixed with the aforementioned format. It is all preserved at this time on a music site. The playlist is simply entitled, "Sunday Morning" which I explain can be played any day at any time, also. The range is amazing, even including religious songs by Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli with "The Lord's Prayer".
I quickly learned the lyrics when I had heard this in its due time on top 40 radio. Very few songs, to me, could instantly be recited as quickly as this one. It has the perfect flow for recollecting the lyrics to sing along; and it made me feel warm when doing so.

I find strenght in the song, cos i blieve there are some facts of lyf contained in it,truly d sng was writtn by Greed who has a breast cancer, she wrote it out of her despair, and i dnt fink witney in any way reduced herself by utterly expressin d song
Did you know that Whitney Houston's debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that, Christie? | Reviewer: Patrick Bateman | 8/7/12
It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.
The song is a lie. | Reviewer: Ceara | 5/18/12
I was surprised that Whitney Houston who professed to be a Christian would sing this song. The greatest love of all is the love that God sent His only son to die for our sins so we could all go to heaven. The song was written by a woman who was suffering from breast cancer. Sadly, the song says she never found the love she was looking for so she decided to love herself instead. What a very lonely way to live. The Bible says to love your neighbor as yourself. It doesn't say you should love yourself. I believe the "love of self" is why there is so much crime in the world today. If we train our children to love themselves, we are in for a lot of trouble. I am sorry that Whitney was not a better example of her faith. She was instead an example of the lyrics of this song.
Inspirational Song | Reviewer: Sarah | 3/1/12
Whitney Houston was a wonderful singer and yes the songs she sang were beautiful and inspirational. This song in particular was always my favorite, it inspired me and I believe the words in it and maybe at the time she sang it, she believed it too. The thing is though, she did not write the song, it was written by Linda Creed and Michael Masser, so they really aren't her words, she just sang them. I watched the special they had on E after her passing and from what it sounds, she had a very good childhood and a wonderful mother loving mother, who did teach her well. She went to church and she did not grow up lonely, she had guidance. Then she went to Hollywood at just 18 years old, and she became famous very quickly. Based on what they said in her special, she was a good kid, she had a lot going for her, and she had a good support system. However, when you are thrown into the spotlight and all of a sudden you are under all of that pressure, it changes you. I believe she snapped. She reached her breaking point, she could not handle the pressure. I think she snapped long before she married Bobby Brown, but he definitely did not help. When you really listen to the words in this song, after watching that special, it doesn't add up. "I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs", "A lonely place to be"? Unless the information from the E special they did on her is false, then that was not her childhood. It might have been the writers childhood or maybe they were writing about someone they knew, but it wasn't hers. She was not singing about herself, she did not learn to depend on herself, she depended on drugs. And she did end up walking in someone elses shadows. So, the song was a contradiction in other words.
the last paragraph of the song bothers me. It says it didn't work for her. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/21/12
That's how I read it: She sings all this song, only to reveal that she's not really sure it works.
"And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love".
I don't get it.
God Is Love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/21/12
Yes God is love! But please overstand we are the manifestation of God. We are God in flesh, materialized. Remember to love thy neighbor as thyself which means you must love self first to know love then treat others the same. God didn't say love thy neighbor as you love me! In life you will have at some time disappointment & loneliness no matter who you are no matter what religion. The song is saying to find strength in lve which is yourself your God self to get up & try again! To believe in yourself Because if you don't believe in yourself you don't truly believe in anything if you don't love yourself you can't love God! everything starts with you not anything or anyone on the outside God lives in and through you & is therefore a part of you. There is no love without the enter action between you & the God in you!
Tragic loss, Beautiful lady & voice, + impact Greatest Love of All | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/12/12
As an early childhood teacher in the late 1980's working and traveling I loved her song "The Greatest Love Of All"which seemed to speak to me.As a wife and mother of three children I worked in hospital, schools, homes, daycare, private Pre-K in my job. My boss,Dr. Mary, had her Ph.d who later died in a plane crash in Africa loved this song as well.We felt Whitney made an impact on trying to turn our attention to our youngest and our children who are vulnerable in this world. These young children will ultimately be the ones to help turn our world around if we teach them well, help them find a sense of pride from working to achieve, help them see their inner beauty and help them maintain a sense of dignity when they fail if they have a love of God which is the Greatest Love of All!.She had a magnificent voice who was double blest with beauty and sound by God. My deepest sympathy to her mother, aunt, family this is a great loss as her positive songs made a positive impact on the world. We need more positive music! My children and granddaughters will be given a copy of this song to remember how this song had an impact in how I lived and worked with all God's children.Prayers to all her family in this tragic and sudden loss of a beautiful voice and person that made an impact in her earlier years which we all should have listened to back then.As she sang about a young child's innocent laughter this song sure inspired us as we went out in the world doing our work with God's young children.

Because the greatest love of all | Reviewer: frankenzhu | 2/1/12
this song is not telling lies.. as it sAYS it's happening to me... what she might telling was during her time was a child it seems no one has to guide her, so it just want to express that if you start teaching good deeds from a childhood there will be good future to become,. and then i find the greatest love of all inside of me.... any individual should start the love from herself before others, how can you love others if you dont know how to love yourself,? so mandy there is no lie when you know how to love yourself...
