Grantchester meadows Lyrics

Review The Song (3)Print the Lyrics
Icy wind of night be gone
This is not your domain
In the sky a bird was heard to cry
Misty morning whisperings
And gentle stirring sounds
Belied the deathly silence
That lay all around.

Hear the lark and harken
to the barking of the dog fox
Gone to ground
See the splashing of the kingfisher flashing to the water
And a river of green is sliding
Unseen beneath the trees
Laughing as it passes
Through the endless summer
Making for the sea

In the lazy water meadow
I lay me down.
All around me golden sunflakes
Settle on the ground.
Basking in the sunshine
Of a bygone afternoon
Bringing sounds of yesterday
Into this city room

Hear the lark and harken
To the barking of the dog fox
Gone to ground
See the splashing
Of the kingfisher flashing to the water
And a river of green is sliding
Unseen beneath the trees
Laughing as it passes
Through the endless summer
Making for the sea

In the lazy water meadow
I lay me down
All around me golden sunflakes
Covering the ground
Basking in the sunshine
Of a bygone afternoon
Bringing sounds of yesterday
Into my city room.

Hear the lark and harken
To the barking of the dog fox
Gone to ground
See the splashing
Of the kingfisher flashing to the water
And a river of green is sliding
Unseen beneath the trees
Laughing as it passes
Through the endless summer
Making for the sea

Review about Grantchester meadows

Overlooked | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/20/2008

This song is generally overlooked by all but the hardest core of floyd fans. Although the band themselves are on the record declaiming the studio portion of Ummagumma, this is one of the gems. If you've ever had the chance to see the KQED 1970 footage of Gilmour and Waters performing this song, it is simply amazing. The friction between the two that came later is no where evident and they nail the song as the quiet peaceful ethereal piece that it is.

Folk from the Floyd | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/20/2008

This is pure Folk music from the early Floyd days. Disagreeing with the previous review, I wouldn't say this was a particularly LSD-influenced song - it simply evokes the atmosphere of Grantchester meadows, a rural tranquil area near Cambridge where Gilmour and Barret grew up. Waters wrote and performed it all himself - its a lost floyd Gem.

Classic Floyd | Reviewer: K | 5/1/2005

This is my favorite song of all times. For those in the know, this sums up the positive psychedelic experience very nicely.

The Endless Summer, laughing rivers of green.. It's the LSD experience, the day after.. when every question has been answered, the mind storms have stopped and you know beyond the shadow of a doubt the will of god.
