VERSE 1:
When I was a little bitty boy just up off the floor
We used to go out to Grandma's house every month end or so
Have chicken pie and country ham, homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about Grandma's house was a great big feather bed
CHORUS:
It was nine feet high and six feet wide, soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese, took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids 'n' four hound dogs and a piggy we stole from the shed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed
VERSE 2:
After supper we'd sit around the fire, the old folks would spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war, Granny'd sing a ballad or two
And I'd sit and listen and watch the fire till the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing I’d know I’d wake up in the mornin' in the middle of the old feather bed
VERSE 3:
Well I love my Ma, I love my Pa, I Love Granny and Grandpa too
I’ve Been fishing with my uncle, I’ve wrestled with my cousin, I even kissed Aunt Lou… eww!
But if I ever had to make a choice, I guess it ought to be said…
I'd trade ‘em all plus the gal down the road for Grandma's feather bed
Yes I'd trade ‘em all, plus the gal down the road…
… Well, maybe I’d better reconsider about the gal down the road!
CHORUS:
It was nine feet high and six feet wide, and soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese, took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids 'n' four hound dogs and a piggy we stole from the shed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed.

Review about Grandma’s Feather Bed happy memories | Reviewer: sarah | 10/29/09
I loved this song as a child and remember bouncing round the living room with my sister when it played, never really knew the lyrics so it was great to fill in the gaps. I really loved hearing it again and will let my children listen to it too, hopefully another generation of John Denver fans to follow.

I grew up with this "bouncy" song as a kid, loving especially the whispered part about the gal down the road. Not until I read the lyrics, though, did I understand all the words to the chorus, which is good since I would not have known what a bolt or tick was when it came to making a feather bed. As an adult the song represents more than just a childhood memory, however. John Denver's music became immortalized in my mind and heart the day he died in that plane crash. Ever since then, the songs he sang - always with a smile, doing what he loved to do most - became songs that stood for the best in love, and romance, family and friendship. He shared his life with us, his fans for a very brief time, but left behind a legacy that most men never achive in two lifetimes. I won't be surpised, if when we get to heaven, we will see John Denver playing music while sitting in the middle of a great big feather bed.
Oh such a lovely bouncy song about childhood in the American South back in the day! lol Got this in my John Denver boxset and it's a lot of fun esp. the part about 8 kids, 4 dogs & the piggy they stole from the shed! Gotta love that piggy... : D Great song that should be listened to over and over again. : )
Very good, but you missed the bit where he whisperes something after saying 'I'd trade 'em all plus the gal down the road...' for the second time. What does he whisper?
to make this song better for people to read i would put the hand signals in ()-these pleaze!! 8-)
