Offspring Gotta Get Away Lyrics

Last updated: 01/18/2013 02:29:25 PM

I'm getting edgy all the time
There's someone around me just a step behind
It's kinda scary the , the shape I'm in
The walls are shakin'and they' re closing in
Too fast or a bit too slow
I'm paranoid of people and it's starting to show
There' s one guy that I can't shake
Over my shoulder is a big mistake
Sitting on the bed
Or lying wide awake
There's demons in my head
And it's more than I can take
I think I'm on a roll
But I think it's kinda weak
Saying all I know is
I gotta get away from me
I tell you something just ain't right
My head is on loose but my shoes are tight
Avoiding my fiends cause they all bug
Life is like a riddle and I'm really stumped
If you reason, don't you know
Your own preoccupation is where you'll go
I think I'm being followed, I look around
It's only my shadow creepin' on the ground

Know the feeling all to well, being a veteran and being diagnose with extreme PTSD for the last 12 years.
Average sleep of 2 hrs a night will make the world really small, to small sometimes !
Love offspring got 3 other albums smash is still cool after all those years.

Paranoia | Reviewer: Zach | 6/26/12

Drugs man... After months or years of being high all day every day it's exactly they way you begin to feel. Unfortunally there are some people who feel this way just because it's who they are. I think we all have a war going on Inside our heads.

It's difficult to grasp these concepts if you haven't experienced paranoia and depression yourself. The lines
"If you reason, don't you know
Your own preoccupation is where you'll go"
are an indication of the way people strive to prove their prefabricated theories using reason. Arguments supporting any thesis can be made in everyday experience, including paranoid ones. If you believe you're bad you'll use reason to support it, you being bad being an axiom to support the arguments you make about your life. Nobody experiences true reality, our interpretation of it is entirely subjective.

Drugs and low self esteem are often correlated. Which causes the other isn't clear. Guilt, paranoia and mental distress leads to drug use as much as drug use leads to these problems. Drugs distance us further from reality but this effect is temporary and artificial compared to the distancing caused by mental distress after traumatic events. Drugs are but a means to escape the warped, unbearable reality of a suffering soul.

Natural Paranoia vs Drugs | Reviewer: Andyrum | 7/18/11

I feel that firstly, it doesn't need to be about drugs. I've never taken drugs in my life and I've had all those feelings in some form. I've known this song for years but after listening to it today I actually felt like it was coming from the point of view of a friend of mine who has just started blocking me and some other friends out of her life, for reasons which don't quite add up. She's in a difficult and distressing situation and that apparently forced her to lose trust where it was before. Even now this song seems to give an insight into how someone I care about is thinking, and right now I couldn't think of a better fit! Everything that came up seemed to relate, but then it's a pretty generic song - which must be what makes it work so well. Not to worry, I haven't just had an epiphany giving me the delusion that The Offspring write songs about me and my friends...:D

Can relate! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/14/10

One thing that makes a good song is if the listener can relate to it and does it cause you to feel emotions. Only Dex and Noodles really know what they were writing about, but if you've ever used a bit too much (or certain) drugs, this is an excellent description of the mental problems that can develop. Could probably also describe normal life for a schizophrenic. I'm not sure about the latter, but I'm sure about the former!

everyone will interpret a song differently. Why it was written and what its about isn't as important as how you takeit and what it means to you when you listen. Though i do like the think this could apply to many problems and stemming from yourself.

Two Cents and respect | Reviewer: Nyarlathotep | 6/25/09

The Offspring were one of the first bands I really started to get into and this song, Gotta Get Away, is one of the first songs that spoke to me in any real fashion. I've given the lyrics much thought over the years, this song has been a continued one on all my playlists and I believe it isn't about any single topic, not drugs, not love, not mnetal illness, nor any combination. I have begun to believe it is spoken to the listener in a voice that almost everyone can relate to, I believe it is about the idea that we are all our own enemies and not matter what vice or issue you have you feel the need to get away from yourself and/or the subject in question, these feelings cause paranoia and general fear, confusion and self-loathing, all of which are included in the songs lines in equal amounts. Be it crack, a bad break up or work related stress we all have night were we are sitting on the bed and lying wide awake and most people have demons in their head that are more than they can take. The lyrics are sublime in a paranoid ideal.

Ah. | Reviewer: Broken (Inside & Out) | 5/3/09

Could be love, paranoia, drugs, or anything, but what really screams to me is the "over my shoulder is a big mistake". Bottom line -- whatever it is, he is blaming whatever that mistake is for what's happening to him.

I relate, too... but not because of paranoia. Something more terrifying... brilliant song.

its the same problem that i have | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/30/08

Totally sounds like a bad habit needing to be kicked...DRUGS specifically meth. cant sleep, paranoid, too fast or a bit too slow, the walls are closing in..yeah. sounds familiar.

Drugs | Reviewer: Mike Rein | 7/8/07

Its about meth or crack.
