Got To Begin Again Lyrics - Billy Joel

Review The Song (1)

Well so here I am at the end of the road
Where do I go from here?
I always figured it would be like this
Still nothing seems to be quite clear

All the words have been spoken and the prophecy fulfilled
But I just can't decide where to go
Yes, it's been quite a day and I should go to sleep
But tomorrow I will wake up and I'll know

That I've got to begin again
Though I don't know how to start
Yes, I've got to begin again
And it's hard

Well it's been quite a while since I lifted my head
And I'm sure the light will hurt my eyes
I see the way that I┬┤ve been spendin' my days
And reality has caught me by surprise

I was dreamin' of tomorrow so I sacrificed today
And it sure was a grand waste of time
And despite all the truth that's been thrown in my face
I just can't get you out of my mind

But I've got to begin again
Though I don't know how start
Yes, I've got to begin again
And it's hard

A Nice Ending For A Nice Album | Reviewer: KeyIXTheHermit | 12/31/12

"Got To Begin Again" is a song. It's not a particularly good song, but perhaps it was never meant to be. This is the last song on his first album, "Cold Spring Harbor." Billy-ophiles know about this album: this is the album that was recorded at the wrong speed, making Billy sound like a chipmunk. Totally ruined and with apparently nobody knowing, it was released anyway (in an initial limited run), as was (of course) a complete failure.

Billy would come back a bit later with his second album, "Piano Man." It would be good enough to slowly build a fan base until his release of "The Stranger," which catapulted him into stardom. And once that happened, suddenly Columbia Records found the money and time to re-release Cold Spring Harbor at it's proper speed. Go figure.

On the whole, Cold Spring Harbor is a decent album. In many ways, it sounds more like the Billy from later years, more than "Piano Man" and the following albums did. "She's Got A Way" originally featured on this album (but didn't become a hit until it's release as a single from his live album, "Songs In The Attic."

So, the end of the album, and we have "Got To Begin Again." The close out, the fade to black, the "say goodnight, Gracie" of the album. That's what it is, that's what it does, and it does it as well as it needs to.
