Just a comment...I really like this song but I have to say that the speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. Therefore, Sheryl would not hear the thunder before the lightening strikes:-)
Good is Good
(Crow/Trott)
Good is good and bad is bad
But you don’t know which one you had
She put your books out on the sidewalk
Now they’re blowing ‘round
But they won’t help you when you’re down
Love’s on your list of things to do
To bring your good luck back to you
And if you think that everything’s unfair
Would you care if you’re the last one standing there
And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn and run before the lightning strikes
And does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by
I don’t hold no mystery
But I can show you how to turn the key
Cause all I know is where I started
So downhearted
And that’s not where you want to be
And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn and run before the lightning strikes
And you could find a rock to crawl right under
And let your good times pass you by
When the day is done
And the world is sleeping
And the moon is on its way to shine
All the friends are gone
You thought were so worth keeping
You feel you don’t belong
But you don’t know why
And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn and run before the lightning strikes
And does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by
Every time you hear the rolling thunder
And you turn and run before the lightning strikes
Well does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by
When the day is done
And the world is sleeping
And the moon is on its way to shine (shine)
And all your friends are gone
You thought were so worth keeping
You feel you don’t belong
Neither do I

Review about Good Is Good thunder, lighting, etc. | Reviewer: Hoshi | 4/7/2008
i never really thought about the light faster than sound thing with this song (which surprises me since i'm normally a stickler for consistency!), but either way, i always viewed the chorus in a different way. i take "before the lighting strikes" as in "before the lightning strikes you." basically you hear thunder, you see bad times coming your way, and you run away from it before it can hurt you rather than sticking around and seeing what happens, thereby possibly letting "all your good times pass you by." fear of getting hurt is greater than curiousity about what lies ahead for this person, and sheryl crow is preaching against this, and i agree.
Rolling Thunder, Folks! Rolling. | Reviewer: Jason | 12/1/2007
Good Lord, please let go of the Thunder vs. Lightning thing. Yes, Thunder is caused by Lightning. Yes, The Speed of Light is much faster than the Speed of Sound. But you’ll notice Crow does specifically reference the "Rolling Thunder". That implies multiple Lightning strikes and multiple Thunderclaps, thus enabling the possibility of hearing a distance Thunderclap before a closer Lightning bolt strikes. Please see also "Poetic License".

this is an amazing song and i agree with winter! but heck yes i love this song!!
Lighting does precede normal thunder, which is why there is a differentiation made between "thunder" & "Rolling Thunder". Just a thought.

you guys are both wrong about the metaphor she employs. the song is about someone afraid to take risks and who ultimately runs the greater risk of letting all their goodtimes pass them by while theyre busy hiding from life.

just to respond to the comment above about the speed of light and sound, i believe that is the purpose of the song....
Lightning, thunder | Reviewer: Bob | 2/27/2007
Good tune. Great voice. And I thought her lightning/thunder imagery suggested someone who doesn't realize they're too late - if you hear thunder and turn away.... too late. Fits the sense of the rest of the song, imho.
I love it. I won't normally listen to this kind of music but this song jamz!!!!!!
