Good Is Good Lyrics - Sheryl Crow

Review The Song (15)

Just a comment...I really like this song but I have to say that the speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. Therefore, Sheryl would not hear the thunder before the lightening strikes:-)

Good is Good
(Crow/Trott)

Good is good and bad is bad
But you don’t know which one you had
She put your books out on the sidewalk
Now they’re blowing ‘round
But they won’t help you when you’re down

Love’s on your list of things to do
To bring your good luck back to you
And if you think that everything’s unfair
Would you care if you’re the last one standing there

And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn and run before the lightning strikes
And does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by

I don’t hold no mystery
But I can show you how to turn the key
Cause all I know is where I started
So downhearted
And that’s not where you want to be

And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn and run before the lightning strikes
And you could find a rock to crawl right under
And let your good times pass you by

When the day is done
And the world is sleeping
And the moon is on its way to shine
All the friends are gone
You thought were so worth keeping
You feel you don’t belong
But you don’t know why

And every time you hear the rolling thunder
You turn and run before the lightning strikes
And does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by

Every time you hear the rolling thunder
And you turn and run before the lightning strikes
Well does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by

When the day is done
And the world is sleeping
And the moon is on its way to shine (shine)
And all your friends are gone
You thought were so worth keeping
You feel you don’t belong
Neither do I

Yes technically its backwards but not really because think about it you hear the thunder from far away before the storm gets to you so yes the thunder is the sound of the lightning but most of the time you hear thunder before you go to look at the storm. So i agree with the something bad is about to happen because you hear it before you see it. But really who cares? I feel like people get so ridiculous about what they think the writer meant just take what you get from it.

"Rolling thunder" is not caused by multiple lightning strikes. It is caused by different components of the sound of a single strike, traveling at different speeds and through different distances.

Also, and reiterating to some degree previous posters' points:

Of course it's a metaphor, and of course Crow and Trott can exercise poetic license, but metaphors are better if they connect with something true rather than something backwards.

It is also possible to attribute the error to the "you" of the song, but this implies that the "you" is ignorant in other and less sympathetic ways than the rest of the song implies. Maybe, but it's a distraction and doesn't look intentional to me.

It is possible to argue that the lightning "you" runs from is subsequent lightning -- signaled by but not directly associated with the earlier thunder. I don't find this very convincing: If this had been the writers' intent, they could easily have indicated it. Instead, they deploy definite articles and use "every time" in a way that together suggest the opposite.

I'm reminded of the Diane Keaton character in Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper." At the beginning, in her poet persona, she comes up with an artless "poem" about a butterfly turning into a caterpillar, or some similar nonsense, and is devastated to learn that it's the other way around.

i think 'hear the rolling thunder' here means you feel something bad is about to happen before it has 'actually happened' that is 'the lightning strikes' so when u so frightened to face hard time and u run away or hide instead of facing it ,u also let some 'good time'pass along with it as u keep mourning about what bad happened to u.

I think by rolling thunder she means that the person "hears" or in other words senses thunder coming on, but he flees before the lightening even strikes, thus never really "hearing" the thunder. The metapor is even stronger considering that lightening comes before thunder, but the person is never there for any of it. This is where paying attention in english classes in highschool rather than physics becomes really important.

thunder, lighting, etc. | Reviewer: Hoshi | 4/7/08

i never really thought about the light faster than sound thing with this song (which surprises me since i'm normally a stickler for consistency!), but either way, i always viewed the chorus in a different way. i take "before the lighting strikes" as in "before the lightning strikes you." basically you hear thunder, you see bad times coming your way, and you run away from it before it can hurt you rather than sticking around and seeing what happens, thereby possibly letting "all your good times pass you by." fear of getting hurt is greater than curiousity about what lies ahead for this person, and sheryl crow is preaching against this, and i agree.

Rolling Thunder, Folks! Rolling. | Reviewer: Jason | 12/1/07

Good Lord, please let go of the Thunder vs. Lightning thing. Yes, Thunder is caused by Lightning. Yes, The Speed of Light is much faster than the Speed of Sound. But you’ll notice Crow does specifically reference the "Rolling Thunder". That implies multiple Lightning strikes and multiple Thunderclaps, thus enabling the possibility of hearing a distance Thunderclap before a closer Lightning bolt strikes. Please see also "Poetic License".

thunder always comes before lightning guys..
its a fact..

ROLLING Thunder | Reviewer: Jiminy | 5/2/07

Lighting does precede normal thunder, which is why there is a differentiation made between "thunder" & "Rolling Thunder". Just a thought.
