Going Back Lyrics - Carole King

Review The Song (1)

GOIN’ BACK
by Gerry Goffin & Carole King

I think I’m going back
to the things I learned so well in my youth
I think I’m returning to
the days when I was young enough to know the truth

Now there are no games to only pass the time
No more electric trains, no more trees to climb
Thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can play the game of life to win

I can recall a time
when I wasn’t ashamed to reach out to a friend
Now I think I’ve got
a lot more than my toys to lend

Now there’s much to do than watch my sailboat glide
And every day can be my magic carpet ride

A little bit of freedom is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I’m going back

A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I’m going back
Going back

Memories of the song Going Back | Reviewer: Chris Tozer | 8/14/10

Being a 60's Brit teenager I first heard this rather unusual song as a minor chart hit for the late great Dusty Springfield. The Byrds' version was only known as an early album track here. Whilst working at London's Rainbow Theatre during the summer of '73 I soon knew the lyrics of 'Going Back' off by heart as Greg Nancarrow of The Sheep movingly closed the first half of the much underrated hippy musical 'Lonesome Stone' each night with a solo accoustic version that culiminated with 'Jesus Loves Me - This I Know'. The show's run was interrupted by a Carole King gig. The stage had to be returned to it's normal level position so her piano didn't fall into the orchestra pit! I don't know if she sang her own song but Greg's is the version stuck in my brain after all these years. Ah, happy daze!
