Separates and lingerie, seven pairs of shoes,
Lots of Woolworth's makeup, a pair of Black Watch trews,
Your out-of-tune piano, sentimental photographs,
A million little memories, a million little laughs.
The wing of the airplane has just caught on fire,
I say without reservation we ain't getting no higher.
All you wanted from me, all I had to give,
Nothing matters you'll see, when in paradise you live,
The plane is diving faster, we're getting near the ground,
Nobody is screaming, no one makes a sound.
It's a girl, Mrs. Walker, it's a girl,
It's a girl, Mrs. Walker, it's a girl,
It's a girl, Mrs. Walker, it's a girl,
It's a girl, Mrs. Walker, it's a girl.
Written at a time when the Who were at the peak of their creativity, Glow Girl, as amazing as it is, was put on the Who's scrap heap and emerged on Odds & Sods. The song is short and perhaps a verse or two from being finished, but the melody is gorgeous and there are words enough to capture the scene. Townshend's guitar makes stuttering and whoop, whoop sounds that give the impression of a failing airplane. The sense of death and rebirth that the song evokes raises hair on arms.
This song is known of its relation to Meher Baba's concept of reincarnation, but until now I don't clearly understand it. Also, Glow Girl was supposed to be a song for the Tommy rock opera. (Yes, Tommy was originally a girl.)
I love this song! It is heart-breaking and makes me cry. The melody is absolutely beautiful. Pete Townshend is a genius. He wrote this song about a boyfriend and girlfriend on a plane together that is about to crash. I can't imagine the horror of knowing that you're about to die. He captures what is going on in their minds in such a heart-wrenching way. The melody is so pure, it sticks in my head.
