Garbage's success story has been a remarkable one. Starting
out as the brainchild of renowned producer Butch Vig,
Garbage at first was only a small experiment, the search
for a "moody, industrial, alternative sound" he had formed
in his head during his various producing and remixing work.
He originally embarked on the project with his studio
partner Steve Marker and long-time friend and sidekick Duke
Erikson, but it was only with the recruitment of Scottish

This has been my favorite song since I was 13 or 14. 10 years later, I still think it's perfect, from a metsphorical standpoint.

Everything just jives. Love the oxymorons.

Especially, "people like us know how to survive, there's no point in living if you can't feel the life." Fearless.

Furthermore, the song is about her own ego fighting against the other while also wanting to not fight. It wants the other person to scram, while simultaneously wanting the other person to take full control. Hence the lyrics from the first two sets opposing the rest of the song's lyrics. She hates [the other], but then ends up deciding to give it a go because hate is really just the ego's way of covering up the fear of losing control of oneself.

Some people have a dual nature and can easily not interact solely from their emotions. An "ego" is like a shield. No one can manipulate you if you are interacting through the ego. "Love" is when you allow someone (or allowed yourself) to break down that shield into your vulnerability -- your emotions. Then you are completely at the other's disposal. This song is about willingly letting the other person into your vulnerability, past your shield. This song is about willingly let someone into their vulnerability without asking them to be vulnerable as well.

This is my favorite song by Garbage. It doesn't sound much like their other songs, but you can still tell it's them if you listen. Shirley Manson really shows off her amazing voice here. It's a great song that lots of people can understand and relate to. I could listen to it forever. I especially like the line that says "but you do (love me) so they can go to hell". Beautiful song.

I'm not sure what to think about how she describes herself: Milk, red hot kitchen, and cool as the deep blue ocean. Maybe Milk is like her milky skin, red hot kitchen sounds like her kitchen is red hot!, and cool as the deep blue ocean sounds like she can also be the opposite of the red hot kitchen.
I think it's about a woman's ability to seduce and control a man. She admits she's cruel but says she'd be love and sweetness if she had him. She uses her weakness (tears) as strength to keep him coming around. She knows he'll cave in when she turns on the water works.

but, I know Doodle. No, I mean I actually know Doodle. All of the people mentioned in this song are friends of the band. Doodle has a famous father and she is well following in his footsteps, albeit as stumbling as they are, The song is just about how beautiful people have problems too. However, Doodle isn't a cutter. If you google Doodle and Ireland you will find the girl's identity. She is quite famous in Ireland. She is also not shy about airing her dirty laundry. Cutting just isn't in the fold.

I've been through eating disorders, hurting myself, suicidal attempts drug problems and what not... but people think you're a freak at the point where you only sit on a fence that's next to a railroad or something, they get panic'd if you don't eat you evening meal... I've been through it and i've survived. this song helped me get of it... and it still remembers me to it. but that's ok, because you have to stay true to your roots, your past and where you're going...

I've been out of a relationship with my ex. First he broke up with me publicly friends knew about it before me. He came to my birthday after 3 weeks of avoidance. Kisses me, hugs me, looked like we were giving it a go? I forgave him. Haven't heard from him since disappeared yet again. The anger I feel in me is so utterly consuming it's pathetic i think of him still. Hearing this song was refreshing as rain. I hope to continue songs that will continue on making me have hope in that not scruples a piece of shit out there.

Couldn't agree more. Poor Shirl, had to suffer like that... This is one of those Garbage songs that do in fact have very personal lyrics. Shirley Manson: "It's a reflection on past ills in a way." Bullying, isolation, self harm... Thank you for all your courage sharing your pain with us Shirley. You are one amazing songwriter- and my favorite artist...
