Fragile Lyrics - Sting & Police

Review The Song (4)

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say

Actually Sting wrote this song in 1987
"The song is a tribute to Ben Linder, an American civil engineer who was killed by the Contras in 1987 while working on a hydroelectric project in Nicaragua." (Wikipedia)
To me it seems a bit ironic, that many Americans feel, this song is about 9/11. Though Sting chose this song as opening song for his concert in Palagio/Italy on 9/11 2001

My 2 cents and a correction. | Reviewer: rainabba | 11/4/10

@Paulette Nordmann, I don't think I could have said it better myself. As a former Marine that was active duty when 9/11 occured (and not having known of the song until years after), it now can bring me to tears in almost any situation. I first really came to know this song from the DVD Sting did in Tuscany. Their performance was on 9/11, but that date held no significance in relation prior (because unless you're into conspiracy theory, he knew nothing of the attacks until the day of the perforamance). That brings me to my correction and please don't let this small correction take anything from this page, his song, or these amazing lyrics. Fragile was originally released in 1988 and has nothing to do (intentionally) with 9/11. Ironically, this just goes to show how timeless the song is and only adds to its value.

A haunting song about 9/11 | Reviewer: Paulette Nordmann | 12/18/09

With Fragile, Sting has written a poignant, memorable song about 9/11. He does this with a simplicity that amazes me because he managed to include everything just as it happened, which he frames in a beautiful, haunting melody. He writes "tomorrow's rain will wash away the stains..." I vividly recall the rainstorms we had in NY the next day, and how we all jumped when the claps of thunder hit.

This was a solo effort for Sting | Reviewer: John P. Havelin | 5/17/07

The Police had nothing to do with the writing or performance of this track.
