Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics - Iron & Wine
Review The Song (71)
I was a quick wet boy
Diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere
Have I found you, Flightless Bird;
Or lost you, American Mouth;
Big Pill, looming?
Now I’m a fat house cat
Nursing my sore, blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats
Crawl through the wide fence cracks
sponsored linksPissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean
Blood of Christ mountain stream
Have I found you?, Flightless Bird;
Or lost you, American Mouth;
Big Pill, stuck going down

This is NOT about Bella & Edward | Reviewer: Anon | 6/10/13
If all of you actually listened to an Iron & Wine album you would know that they are a folklore band which means their songs tell a story usually based on the American Dream, politics, War, drugs, & the Sublime. This song is NOT about love and has nothing to do with love. Kristen Stewart is an idiot obviously misinterpreting the song just like she misinterpreted MaryLou in On the Road as well as the Beat Generation (Read Hemingway).
This song is about the war and the destruction of man. Flightless Bird (eagle, free bird)= wounded men ... American Mouth = their voice, their experience. They lost themselves or a part of themselves with the experience of war. They went from innocent to tainted & lost. They could never regain what they were. This also ties in with what people expect the American Dream that it is not all that beautiful.

FLIGHTLESS BIRD AMERICAN MOUTH
Iron & Wine: Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics
I was a quick wet boy, diving too deep for coins
(Reflects actually from a young prostitute wanting to earn more)
All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys
(All men [even women!] like to watch her as she uses her dildo)
Then when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair
(Captured by authority & was forced to stop this job)
Stole me a dog-eared map and called for you everywhere
(Was cloaked & hiding but still urging for sex)
Have I found you?
(Asking if can live without sex)
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping or lost you, american mouth
(Refering to a cock, which she is longing. American mouth- love to eat vagina)
Big pill looming
(Taking huge amount of pill to avoid pregnancy)
Now I'm a fat house cat
(No job, big pussy)
Nursing my sore blunt tongue
(Just doing masturbation)
Watching the warm poison rats curl through the wide fence cracks
(Watching couples make love either live or movies)
Pissing on magazine photos
(Cumming on nude pictures)
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold
(Men baiting innocent women)
And clean blood of Christ mountain stream
(And taking their virginity from them)
Have I found you?
(Asking oneself if already satisfied from previous intercourse)
Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding or lost you, american mouth
(Missing to have sexual intercourse/ oral sex)
Big pill stuck going down
(Unused huge amount of pregnancy pill)
...apologize if someone got offended.
I Love This Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/20/11
I think this is a great song. It could be interpreted in many ways, yes. But I like it's melody-it's soft music & words. It's a great thing that they played this in the Twilight movie. It really suits the scene.
I really think this is a great song & many thanks for all who helped produce this.
I love twilight and this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/11
People guess all wrong things about twilight. It is really great. People who say they hate twilight....are just a bunch of fools. How can someone on such a good movie. C'mon, atleast it has 1 positive effect, no one is afraid of vampires anymore. And as it is said, untill u get criticized for your work, its useless and meaningless. People get jealous and criticize only the works which are good. Hence, criticisim is the mark of a great work like The Twilight Saga. And last of all thank you Lotus for the meaning.

This song can mean many different things to people. It appears as though this song could mean that he is searching for something, not someone. I think it has more to do with where society is going as opposed to where it has been. Cut my baby hair, could mean he has to move on from where America has gone and become what society wants. Fat house cat, nursing my sore blunt tongue could mean that he has settled for what America has become, because no one will listen to him anymore, hence the blunt tongue line. Just a thought. Not saying I am right, nor wrong, just my thoughts on the song.
It's about the music | Reviewer: Serena | 8/19/10
I would just like to say something. I came to this page looking for insights as to what this incredible song is about, and instead all I got was these annoying comments- people: every person is entitled to their own opinion. twilight is just one series out of thousands, and whether or not a person got something out of it is personal; however, if someone does state their opinion its uneccessary to fight him or her just because yours is different. so please let go of your petty differences and share your love of music- does anyone have a thought as to the meaning of these lyrics? (and thank you to the people who commented already about what this song means.)

I think its a great song, and yeah it was on the twilight soundtrack which is how I found it, but for all of you who hate twilight you have to remember the artist willingly put it on the soundtrack. They want people to find it, and it was a great opportunity for them to expand their fan base. Hate all you want but twilight fans didn't make the soundtrack, they just listened too it.
Love this song anyways:) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/5/10
Ok, first of all I think I should say that I've loved iron & wine way before the whole twilight thing. I am a twilight fan also so people shouldn't be saying "oh you only like this song because it was in twilight" because ur taste in music has nothing to do with a movie that you've seen. And honestly who cares about what think of twilight? If you don't like it then ignore it don't go on and on about it, because obviously you care enough about twilight to be writing a comment about it. And who are you to judge me?? Just because somebody likes twilight doesn't make them annoying. Most of my friends don't even know that I like twilight and they think I'm perfectly fine. Its a double standard!!
good music | Reviewer: holle | 3/13/10
I am glad that movies come out with soundtracks... it allows people to listen to music that they otherwise probably would not listen to. Who cares how it comes into their life the point is they are listening to music that is good, meaningful, and it allows their soul to have a little more depth. I think that's awesome.
lol | Reviewer: lalala | 3/4/10
lol twilight fans are extremely annoying, which i guess would make you think the people themselves are annoying and don't have good taste, which would make you think they are unworthy of listening to such awesome music. but that's just what i'm guessing.
A Take on Flightless Bird, American Mouth | Reviewer: Lotus | 12/15/09
Here's a guy in a relationship with two women, who is focused on (making) money. Too quick to choose the money, or the woman with the money and supposed higher class. Focused on the material (as she is) All the plastic toys, that should make for a 'better life' than with the one who truly loves him for him.
Then when the cops closed the fair (the manipulative rich woman decides it's time for them to marry), he cut ties with the one who loved him. Realized his mistake and stole a dog eared map (the path that always led to her, his true love)...
"Have I found you?' (Jealous, weeping) or Lost you? (will she ever forgive him, take him back?)
Big pill looming is reality faced. (the bitterest pill of his reality of what he has done, is hard to swallow).
Back to his 'life'-- A Fat House Cat. Wealthy and established. Lonely, cold existence. No love. Nursing my sore blunt tongue. Mistake from 'I do.' Watching the warm, poison rats... (wife? those in his life sucking the life outta him, using him, unappreciative of what he provides...
All the while dreaming of his true love...left behind, bleeding, grounded...flightless without her love...
Reality again. Bill pill looming (you made your bed, and now lie it)...stuck going down..It is a bitter pill to swallow...

Yeah I know, but still I love Iron and Wine, and twilight is just mega annoying, and its taking over a bunch of good music. And, twilight makes no sense, so I can have my opinion if I want to. K? Whatever.
