The path is clear
Though no eyes can see
The course laid down long before.
And so with gods and men
The sheep remain inside their pen,
Though many times they've seen the way to leave.
He rides majestic
Past homes of men
Who care not or gaze with joy,
To see reflected there
The trees, the sky, the lily fair,
The scene of death is lying just below.
The mountain cuts off the town from view,
Like a cancer growth is removed by skill.
Let it be revealed.
A waterfall, his madrigal.
An inland sea, his symphony.
Undinal songs
Urge the sailors on
Till lured by the sirens' cry.
Now as the river dissolves in sea,
So Neptune has claimed another soul.
And so with gods and men
The sheep remain inside their pen,
Until the Shepherd leads his flock away.
The sands of time were eroded by
The river of constant change.

Not only this song is one of the most beautiful song ever but it has what one should understand as magic. I was 17 when I first listen to this music and it changed my life forever. It is really difficult to say in words what this songs means.

One of the Best Songs Ever Written... without a doubt. | Reviewer: Daniel Rodriguez | 12/21/06
This is a true classical song that should be remembered as one of the best of its time.... definately not your typical radio tune but a true classical of the British Rock Culture that opened the way for bands like Queen, Pink Floyd and others alike to make it into the main stream of pop culture... Tony Bank's opening soothing keyboard notes takes us thru a string of melodious chords that travel up and down the piano with a uniform pattern than would compare only to a modern Bach - followed by an impressive vocal performance by Peter Gabriel singing poetic lyrics that incite our imigination to travel into a mystical time that, in just a few words, revives the pages of the history of war and fear - No flute has ever communicated the spirit of a song touching the heart and soul of its listeners as this - accompanied once again with Banks majestic keyboard style, mixed with Phill Collins' outstanding drums; and when followed by Steve Hacket's inspiring solo guitar and Mike Rutherford's unique and genuine bass depth, it makes this song a grandiose melody and delightful venue for future generations of music lovers looking to understand a generation that turned to music as an alternative to hate and fear. - Definately, The Best of Genesis when Genesis was as its Best.
this is definetly one of my favorite songs. I definetly would recomend this song, or other older Geneis, to anyone seeking music with a sort of depth and imaginantion, rather than the same old verse, chorus, verse chorus song structures and regurgitated lyrical, melodic and rythmic cliches. If you like this you should definetly check out bands like Yes, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Tool, The Mars Volta, Van Der Graaf Generator, and Emerson Lake and Palmer. All around this song is structured magnificently, from Tony Banks' nice piano intro to the lush mellotron set against Gabriel's impressive vocals, and nice flute work to Phil Collins incredible yet tasteful drumming in perfect sync with Mike Rutherfurd's always impressive yet typically restrained bass playing and finally to the Amazing guitar solo played by Steve Hackett. The solo in this song will take you to beautiful places, and then take you to places beyond sheer beauty that you never even knew existed.
This is a most eloquent song of alogorical lyrics and an equally inspired guitar solo by the underrated guitarist steve hackett. This song is not for your average rock fan as it provokes too much thought.
