(*Fin) Lyrics - Anberlin

Review The Song (36)

Feels like you're miles from here,
in other towns with lesser names.
Where the unholy ghost doesn't tell
Mary or William exactly what they want to hear.
You remember the house we drew.
told you and the Devil to both just leave me alone.
If this is salvation, I can show you the trembling.
You'll just have to trust me. I'm scared.

I am the patron saint of lost causes.
Aren't we all to you just near lost causes?
Aren't we all to you just lost

Tommy, you left behind
something that will mean everything right before you die.
What if you gained the whole world?

You've already lost four little souls from your life.
Widows and orphans aren't hard to find.
They're home missing daddy who's saving the abandoned tonight.
Wish your drinking would hurry and kill you.
Sympathy's better than having to tell you the truth.

That you are the patron saint of lost causes.
All you are to them is now a lost cause.
All you are to them is now, causes.

Billy, don't you understand?
Timothy stood as long as he could and now
you made his faith disappear.
More like a magician and less like a man of the cloth.
We're not questioning God.
Just those he chose to carry on His cross.
We're no better, you'll see.
Just all of us, the lost causes.

Aren't we all to you just lost causes?
Are we all to you lost?
Lost causes
So all we are to you,
Is all we are, is all we are
All we are is all we are

[Choir:]
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you? (Lost causes, all we are is all we are)
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you? (To you, lost...)

Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?
Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?

Take what you will, what you will
And leave. Could you kill, could you kill me
If the world was on fire
and nothing was left but hope or desire
And take all that I could bring forth, is this hell
Or am I on the floor over-desperate?
Hold hands streaming of blood again?
And then take full weight of me
Guard my dreams, figure this out,
It's me on my own. Helpless, hurting, hell
Will you stay strong as you promised?
Cause I'm stranded and bare.
Meanness is washed up in all that I am
is God. Take this and all,
Then grace takes me to a place
Of the father you never had
Ripping and breaking and tearing apart
This is not heaven
This is my hell.

Lament | Reviewer: Matthew | 3/27/13

70% of the Psalms are lament. When you look at the top 150 Christian music of today, you can see none of lament. Just happy, feel-good songs.
I challenge you to read Psalm and find a lot of "Where are You, God" stuff.
This song is clearly a lament by Anberlin.
Why do Christians always have to put on this face that they're always happy?
We all are broken. If we are perfect, obviously Jesus didn't need to die.
We're broken, that's why we need Christ. Lament should be perfectly normal for Christ-followers. God never promises us that once we follow Him our lives will never have hardships or struggles. I believe that those hardships and struggles are what make us cling to Him more.

i dont want to start a huge argument or any bad feelings toward each other, but what he said is very well true. Although it was a little blunt, it is true, and people need to know that. It isn't a message of hate, but the gospel. What he is doing is a form of evangelistic approach. He's just showing how we are all sinners, how we all are going to how, but that if we truly accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we will be saved. Now i see what you're saying, and it does seem a like its trying to make people turn to Christ out of fear, but its not. Anyways, hope this helps to any one :)

This song... | Reviewer: Nick A | 10/29/11

As Jake said earlier, this song is special in one way or another. When i listen to this song it makes me feel happy, a different feeling to all the other bands i listen to (Parkway Drive, The Acacia Srain etc.) with Stephens angelic vocals, this song by far has the strongest lyrical meaning.

my 2 cents | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/5/11

i agree with previous statements below. in the bible, god states we all have free will, and we all are his children. yes, we do go to hell for not believing in him, but thats because by shunning, him, we welcome the devil, however unwillingly. that, too, is stated in the bible. not trying to argue, or trying to get atheists ragin, just trying to inform the uninformed :)

You guys | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/21/11

It breaks my heart to see comment strings like this one. Christians are told not to parade their religion around but they do it anyway. Being a Christian isn't about bringing people to Jesus and it's not about telling atheists they're wrong. It's about being obedient. Why do we argue over everything? You know the two greatest commandments? Love God, love people. Be obedient. Love each other.

For those preaching a message of hate instead of love | Reviewer: frooshie | 5/19/11

Everybody Needs help, They Might think they don't need help, but in reality they really need it; and they need it badly. They are fooled that they're fine, but they're not.

They need Jesus in their lives. Jesus is the only way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father Except through Him.

You can't get to Heaven without Him. If you think you're fine by yourself, then I'm here to say that you are sadly wrong.

You will go to Hell if you die without believing and accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior.

But if you believed and accepted Him then you can enter His Kingdom. Just Be Sure you also accepted Him as your Lord and not just Savior.
...................................................................................................
I am a Christian and the song was written about people like you. Instead of bringing people to Christ with a message of love, you push them away with messages of hate and fear and you make "their faith disappear like a magician" and the worst part is you don't even know you are doing it.

hi. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/18/11

If this is true, that "God" will send you to hell if you don't believe and accept him as your superior, and bow down for him, then um, how is he so "loving"?

It relates back to The Holocaust, Adolf Hitler didn't kill those who followed and were with him, though he killed, and tortured those who didn't.
If there is a God, I believe he created us in his image, He gave us free will. We don't have to live for him. And we are ALL children of him, not just Jesus. Jesus even said he was but a man.
But eh, that's my belief. You believe in whatever gets you through this life. =) Have a nice day. :D

Ask the man. | Reviewer: Jake | 12/11/10

This song is very special. Im not sure what it means. i could try and figure it out but mostly likely i wont figure it out. I think the only way to find out would be to ask Stephen him self. But from the songs ive heard that he has written i believe it might be a song with great meaning.

and even if it is a catholic reference does that make it non christian? why the heck do we as the protestants have such an anti catholic tint to our practices. they're our christian brothers. it makes me sick.....

on another note.... as a missionary kid that has grown up in the ministry.... this song really has had a huge impact on my life as it has helped me deal with some of the pain that inherently happens to pk's and mk's. stephen (lead singer) wrote it about his relationship with his dad who is a pastor

Anberlin's Best | Reviewer: Ryan | 6/22/10

@ -C-: While this is a possibility, I doubt it. Anberlin was originally formed out of the Band SaGoh 24/7, standing for Servants After God's Own Heart. When Anberlin sings about God and hell and faith, they mean it religiously.

Keep in mind the album too. Cities (as defined by Stephen Christian) is lyrically a man vs. self album, so a lot of it is about the darker side of Christianity, i.e., the way we are so corrupted by sin and doubt (Dismantle, Repair is entirely about letting God dismantle your "sinner" self and repair you; Alexythimia is the notion of confusing lust for love, etc.).

As such, this song (to me) is entirely about someone who has just about lost all hope of things and people in this world and is having a hard time holding his faith while trying to survive this world (a common feeling among many of the Christians I know). To him, the people who are supposed to defend the faith are abusing it, and those who have no faith are prospering. So he/they feel(s) lost and desperate, and is almost crying out this song as a prayer for some sort of clarity, meaning, and/or hope in this existence where he/they is/are having a hard time seeing God and having faith.

think about it. | Reviewer: -C- | 4/21/10

What if the song has next to nothing to do about their religious beliefs? Atheists and Agnostics still say "Jesus" and "God" regularly; albeit in a way that offends the christian sect.

If you read the lyrics as sort of memos to the named person (Tommy, Billy, etc), it doesn't seem to be pointed at any religious figure. One verse reads to be pointed at a father who abandoned his children (four little souls) for the sake of others. The other verse seems pointed at a priest (man of the cloth) who caused someone to stop believing in god (faith disappear).

Having a religion doesn't mean that all things apply to your religion.

Boldness. | Reviewer: Jared Ray | 10/4/09

Don't be scared to stand up Christians. You can't stand aside and watch the world do wrong or accept the bare minimum. Someone needs to stand up and be bold about Christ, we need to stop being passive about letting people off the hook with their faith. Take every chance as an opportunity to share Christ's love.

Think of every person you encounter everday, whether you know them or not. A majority, sadly, don't know the Christ that paid for their eternal life in heaven. Be bold. Don't give up. I don't believe you can necessarily shove it down a person's throat, but definitely let it be known throughout the world. Give Him the glory. Be humble and magnify who He is, and the world will see Him and the price he paid for such a small you and me.

Live not for yourself, but instead, die to yourself and let God lead your life. I love you Jesus Christ.

I will keep you all in my prayers. Feel free to email me.

Love. | Reviewer: Joel | 5/17/09

Wonderful song. I think we should love God and people. I believe in Jesus Christ as the way, truth and life. But i also do strongly believe (ESPECIALLY if you claim to follow Jesus) that we should not be unloving when we disagree with someone who feels differently. I hope all who read this think about why you're living today cuz life is so wondeful. :) We all need love. God bless.

I believe this song is talking about the fact that 'we are all lost causes' in a sense. And that in this world there seems to be a never ending cycle of despair etc, even in people that we see as the protectors and ones to keep us on track, the 'patron saints'. And when we see these people that are meant to have it all together, we loose a little hope ourselves.

It is not questioning God at all, it's questioning ourselves. 'The people he took on the cross'. As a christian, I believe God did send his son to the cross to bare the burden of all our sins, even though we are not worthy. And so many of us take it all for granted, or just choose not to believe.

This is my point of view. I'm not pushing religion in anyones face, just stating what I believe, you believe what you want to :)

All those Christians or any other person with a religious view, listen to this song I'm about to write down and take a long hard look at yourselves; Listening to Freddie Mercury - Emery.

Your beliefs about God and Jesus.. i have nothing against it..just don't go telling people how to live. I believe in God and that there is a higher power, but no that he controls my life and that I have to devote my life to him or anything. Please don't go pressing your religious beliefs on anyone..thats just rude and you wouldn't want someone doing it to you. And on a different note, great song ive always liked Anberlin but when i heard them.. i was just blown away.
