Fiddle And The Drum Lyrics - A Perfect Circle

Review The Song (10)

And so once again
My dear Johnny my dear friend
And so once again you are fightin' us all
And when I ask you why
You raise your sticks and cry, and I fall
Oh, my friend
How did you come
To trade the fiddle for the drum
You say I have turned
Like the enemies you've earned
But I can remember
All the good things you are
And so I ask you please
Can I help you find the peace and the star
Oh, my friend
What time is this
To trade the handshake for the fist

And so once again
Oh, America my friend
And so once again
You are fighting us all
And when we ask you why
You raise your sticks and cry and we fall
Oh, my friend
How did you come
To trade the fiddle for the drum

You say we have turned
Like the enemies you've earned
But we can remember
All the good things you are
And so we ask you please
Can we help you find the peace and the star
Oh my friend
We have all come
To fear the beating of your drum

Why does this song make you feel patriotic? I think it was meant to have the opposite effect, especially seeing at it was written by a Canadian living in America.. America WAS a great country, and this is her lament. If this was ever sung at an inaugeration.. I just think they simply wouldn't allow it, but it would be met with a lot of boos.

In any case, Maynard did an amazing job and his harmonies are gorgeous. But Joni will always have done it better.

I have had all the a perfect circle albums and continue to listen to them to this day i also use some songs in some youtube videos... The lyrics is the truth also inspiring in the sense that humans have to see the illusions that hold us from our freedom.
We generate genocide if you look at it from a human perspective not a canadian or american black or white we always kill our own when we choose war. Our tv's have us comfortable with death or cheating ways in life the tv is just a box of influence with a bow a gift from the devil it takes control every perspective almost as if under control cause the opinions are limited to people who sell there sole for some paper some numbers people kill and die for.. Its so senseless.. Death your made to fear.. Fear is what drives man to follow influence fear is what makes you choose kill and the pills are when you feel ill as your grow you learn your forefathers and grandfathers killed and was killed for us to be here today. Maybe that in the back of our minds seems kinda sick twisted if you will i know my grandfather felt that way when he learned about 9/11. He had a model of the WW2 plane that bombed Hiroshima.. He put the japanese meat balls on the wings instead of American cause he knew the men that dropped the bomb where Japanese..

Imagine the world if everyone was unwrapped of the illusions Religion,National Security,Prime ministers and presidents,Queens and Kings,Paper with numbers... God is who you make.. God is who you want god to be always and forever. Not many church's or priest's can tell you otherwise..
God is your imagination cause for the most people imagine a better world God is suppose to be for the better of things. Not the ruling of man they take the fruit you earned and don't feed the hungry. They are filthy rich and tons of people dieing of hunger its satanic and that's not my Gods people..

Don't fret precious I'm here.
Step away from the window.
Go back to sleep

Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a fuck about you, like I do.

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

I’ll be the one to protect you from your enemies and all your demons
I'll be the one to protect you from a will to survive and a voice of reason
I'll be the one to protect you from your enemies and your choices son
They're one in the same, I must isolate you…
Isolate and save you from yourself..

Here's The plan Georgia Guidestones.

i think its really brave of maynard to go this song with nothing but bare lyrics, and to be honest anything else would not have worked out anywhere near as well as this has (take a moment to understand that, i did) . This song is so beautifull and really proves maynards abilities as a vocalist, despite them already being evident in the noose and a stranger, sooo uhhh........ bye

wow | Reviewer: spencer | 12/14/07

I am a long time fan of tool, a perfect circle, puscifer and any other project of maynard keenan.
The thing that continually blows me away is there versatile and unique songs. This proves to me beyond any doubt that maynard is one of the greatest artist of his generation, and maybe, ever. please, immerse yourself, listen to these songs if you have not already: The Pot-Tool, Choke-Puscifer, and then listen to Fiddle and the Drum. I know joni mitchell wrote it, but it is a testament to the talent of this band

Old Lady's Viewpoint | Reviewer: Kathleen Rhodes | 6/16/07

I'm 56 years old, a long-time Joni Mitchell fan and a jazz/folk singer myself. I have often sung a capella so I know how difficult it can be. It is an amazing thing to me that I have never heard this song! My daughter (20) played it for me and I was astounded! So beautiful, so haunting. The two voices overplay wonderfully and we played it over and over - putting in as many extra harmonies as we could. It is sad that my generation misses such talented people simply by being too set in our ways to try listening to newer material -- or in this case, older material by newer groups. I have not yet heard any other songs by 'Perfect Circle' but I will. I'd be willing to buy their cd for this song alone. The only comment I also have is I don't believe 'Perfect Circle" used the word 'America' in thier version.

My Mistake | Reviewer: Kathleen Rhodes | 6/16/07

I just listened to the song again and they do say "Oh America my friend." As my daughter would say, my bad. Again, a beautifully done song. It has inspired this old lady to open her ears to others.

Iceland | Reviewer: ToGGi | 5/31/07

This is basicly like every song written in Iceland in the 1000 or something :)
I'm always listening to theese songs, called "þríund" or "áttund" I dont remember wich.
Anyways, I love this song. ^-^

great version | Reviewer: robin | 2/8/07

but i still prefer Joni Mitchell's's still a-capella, but her's is the original, and that makes it better

still...maynard and billy did definitely put their own spin on it and definitely made it, if nothing else, creepier

Very nice... | Reviewer: Jessica | 9/22/05

The harmonies, the bare vocals...its a very old school classic. Reminds me of an old 40's or 50's battle hymn or something. Makes you feel a bit patriotic actually, or at least it does to me.

They surprised me with this one...and it was a good surprise! I Liked it. Maynard's vocals are beautiful here.

Fiddle and the Drum | Reviewer: Lolli | 8/22/05

This song is so beautiful.. the way it's sung, with the harmonies, and the lyrics......

I love this song! :)
