Faust, Midas, And Myself Lyrics
Performed by SwitchfootReview The Song (22)
This one's about a dream
I had last night
How an old man tracked me home
And stepped inside
He put his foot inside the door
And gave a crooked smile
Something in his eyes
Something in his laugh
Something in his voice
That made my skin crawl off
He said, "I've seen you here before
I know your name.
You could have your pick
Of pretty things.
You could have it all
Everything at once.
Everything you've seen,
Everything you'll need,
Everything you've ever had in fantasies."
"You've one life,
You've one life.
You've one life left to lead."
I woke up from my dream
As a golden man
With a girl I've never seen
With golden skin
I jumped up to my feet
She asked me what was wrong
I began to scream
I don't think this is me
Is this just a dream
Or really happening?
What direction?
What direction?
I'm splitting up!
I'm splitting up!
This is my personal disaffection
What direction? What direction?
What direction now?
I looked outside the glass
At golden shores
Golden ships and masts
With golden cords
As my reflection passed
I hated what I saw
My golden eyes were dead
And a thought passed through my head
A heart that is made of gold can't really beat at all
I wanted to wake up again
Without a touch of gold
What direction?
Death or action!
Life begins at the intersection.
I woke up as before
But the gold was gone
My wife was at the door
With her night robe on
My heart beat once or twice
And life flooded my veins
Everything had changed
My lungs had found their voice
And what was once routine
And what was once routine was now the perfect joy
You've one life
You've one life
One life left to lead

this song is so great! the lyrics are awesome and once you look up the title "Faust, Midas, and myself" and it's meaning the work becomes even greater. the three parts of the song directly relate to the three parts of the title. look it up!
Amazing song, listen to it over and over | Reviewer: Steve | 8/27/09
This song puts a feeling in me thats says, "listen to this. learn from it. listen to it again. and again. and again." no matter how many times i hear this song i think about what it means to me and how each time i think of something different that it connects to. it's not a preachy song, but a song that like others have said lets you take whatever way you choose. great song anyone who for some reason hasn't heard this should.
Great Song! | Reviewer: ED6 | 8/15/09
I read a review that said that claiming this as a Christian song was ruining it. It is true that Switchfoot is a secular/Christian band. They don't put God/Jesus in all of their songs. Did you also know that there is a whole book in the Bible that doesn't mention God or Christ? My memory slips me now, but I believe it is Ezra. The principles of Switchfoot's songs are all Christian whether the song itself is about God or not. I really like Switchfoot because their songs teach Bible principles in a way that really makes you think about your own life. What direction do you want to take, greed, want, envy?, or a simple life loving those around you and being satisfied with what you have. I think people searching for answers to why the world is the way it is need to stop scoffing and start reading the Bible.

I got Oh! Gravity. the other day, and I started to listen to it. Then I came upon this track and it was amazing. I put it on repeat and listened to it for about an hour and a half.

This song is so beautiful and convicting. I love the "A heart that's made of gold can't really beat at all" part and "And what was once routine
Was now the perfect joy." The lyrics are so deep, and wonderful and they make me think. Possibly the best song on the record for me.

i don't have an actual review, just a message to Bobby and all those like him. Jon Foreman and the rest of Switchfoot have commented that what they love about music is that it can be interpreted in many different ways. Jon has said that he is carefull in writing the songs NOT to put any specific mention of God or Jesus. By doing so, they leave it open to interpretation. No, this song has no mention of Christ, but neither do any of their other songs. That's what's great about Switchfoot. Interpretation.
yeah | Reviewer: bobby | 4/5/08
i think this song is awesome but i think you people trying to reduce to being dedicated to religion and god are ruining the song. i mean i know they are a christian band but there is nothing about god in this particular song

Every time I listen to this song I gleam at the joy the message brings to my heart and soul. Faust: The man who sold his soul to the devil. Midas: The man with the golden touch. These two people had everything they could ask for, but even they found out in the end the things they had weren't what they needed. None of it was important. Happiness, thankfulness for the things you have. Good stuff.
About the title | Reviewer: matt | 1/30/08
after listening to this song the first time I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics at all. SO i figured it was a boring track because theres not a lot of instruments used in the track. But after listening to the lyrics again it hit me. This song is way deep and I feel carries a good message. And after I did a little research on the title i found out that Faust was a dude who sol his soul to the Devil for knowledge and power. Sorta goes with the whole theme of the song. Love it. Thanks switchfoot !

This song is amazing, the lyrics when you first hear them really grabs you. Materialism is a major issue with the world. People will end others lives over a fight for money which in the scheme of things has little to no importance. What really matters is your impact on the world around us.
