Father And Daughter Lyrics

Performed by Paul Simon
Review The Song (62)

If you leap awake in the mirror of a bad dream
And for a fraction of a second you can't remember where you are
Just open your window and follow your memory upstream
To the meadow in the mountain where we counted every falling star

I believe a light that shines on you will shine on you forever
And though I can't guarantee there's nothing scary hiding under your bed
I'm gonna stand guard like a postcard of a Golden Retriever
And never leave 'til I leave you with a sweet dream in your head

[Chorus:]
I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

Trust your intuition
It's just like goin' fishin'
You cast your line and hope you get a bite
But you don't need to waste your time
Worryin' about the market place
Try to help the human race
Struggling to survive its harshest night

[Chorus 2x]

My parents divorce.... | Reviewer: Tamara | 3/16/12

I actually have never heard of this song since last night... My dad was writting things down to put on my Senior page and he wrote the chorus to this song "I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you" I cried... Just thinking of how much I love my dad, and everything he has done for me... He was who I leaned on to make it through my mom and dads divorce, everyday he told me he loved me and that although we couldn't bring her back he knows she loves me unconditionally... The night my mom packed her bags to leave, my dad promised me that no matter what I do or where I go tat he would always be one step behind me, and that he would never leave me. Now only 1 1/2 more months to go in my senior year I can't help but think that pretty soon i'll be on my own... Out of the house living my own life, but it will be okay because I know what where ever I go my dad will ALWAYS be there for me... Iloveyou dad! Your the best father any daughter could ask for!

I have a six months old daughter and I love her with all my heart. I just have a problem with her mother and I am not happy with her. I am afraid every day that if I leave IF will lose my daughter. This song just keeps me strong because I want to see her development till she gets married.

i lost my dad 6 years ago just 3 months after my mum. Even though I am not young I felt like a child when my dad died. He was always there for me. everything from catching a spider to helping me raise my son. I have never felt so safe and cared for since he is gone. God bless you dad and mum

I cry every time I hear this song! | Reviewer: Julie | 10/8/11

This is the song my dad picked for us to dance to at our wedding and I can't really think about that moment or this song without crying. It's so sweet and I think this song just speaks volumes of how my dad (and mom) raised my brother and me.

my wedding | Reviewer: Stacy | 6/1/11

I, thankfully, still have my father. We had a strained relationship while I was growing up though. My sister was the golden child and I was the black sheep. My father is the most amazing person I have ever met and all I ever wanted to do was make him happy, although I never thought that I had succeeded. When I was planning my wedding reception, we were trying to figure out a song to dance to. My dad convinced me to let him pick a song and surprise me. This is the song he picked. I have never felt as loved as I did at that moment and haven't doubted it since. I still tear up every time I hear it. This is an absolutely amazing song.

My Daughter | Reviewer: Bernie | 4/18/11

This song always brings a tear to my eye.
I have 5 daughters the first two are with my ex wife. I worked my ass off while she raised them. I am not close to either.

I met a girl that had 2 daughters 5 and 1 whom I raised as my own. 1 year later we had a daughter her mother went back to work and let me raise our daughter that was 9 years ago. Last year we split up and when I told our daughter she was happy because she could live with Dad. My ex gave me the gift of being a father. I never was with my daughters or her's but I got to be with our's
There was no fights when we split I have our daughter when ever I want she takes her the rest of the time. I still love and spend time with her daughters. But I am so close and so in love with our daughter. She loves her Dad and is so much like me. I got to be a Dad and will always thank her mom for that gift. This is one of our favorite songs.

I am touched by the stories here of daughters hat have lost their fathers I cannot imagine not being there for mine.

If your fathers loved you 1/100th as much as I do mine you were very loved!

Bernie

Close to My Heart | Reviewer: LAB | 2/27/11

I didn't have the father-figure needed in my childhood. my parents were divorced and i would visit him about 3 times a year. i really loved these visits and I always looked up to him. In my teen years, however, it was all broken. We used to watch the Wild Thornberry's all the time and that is where i first heard this song. Listening to this always reminds me of him and what we used to have. It is simply beautiful and amazing what love a father can have for his daughter.

Rebuilding | Reviewer: sarah | 9/9/10

I have been in the process of writing a book - in my journey I discovered how much I have missed the bond I never had with my father. The last time I saw him, I was 10 and then he died when I was 17. I am 33 now and finally writing my story. The only good memory I have of him was his love for music - something I share in common with him. I have decided to rebuild my relationship with him, even though he is not here in the physical and I could not think of a better way than through music. The words of this beautiful song are exactly the message I needed to hear - thank you Paul :) I know my Dad would love it!

Best father/daughter song EVER | Reviewer: Daughter Proud Of Her Father | 7/28/10

I first heard this song when I was 12 on the radio sometime after my mom left me and my dad. I downloaded it later that day and played it for my dad because I said it made me think about us. He loved it as much as I did, maybe more. Ever since then, this has been our song and I told him that it's my song choice for the father/daughter dance at my wedding when that day comes.

To all the amazing fathers out there....THANK YOU!!!!

thank you | Reviewer: Angi Jones | 5/21/10

My Dad just took his own life yesterday. Three days before that he posted this to me (on facebook) but I did not see it until yesterday. I thank you so much for writing a song that has become a message to me from my Dad, I needed to hear these things from him more than anyone will ever know. I love you SO much Dad and want you to always know...

As long as one and one is two
There could never be a daughter
That loved her father more than I love you ♥

This beautiful song! | Reviewer: Martha Moore | 3/15/10

This beautiful song really touches the heart and reminds me of my relationship with my father. I am very lucky to still have my father here with me today, as he is 90 years old and has battled numerous illnesses and health problems, as well as survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II.

I also was lucky to have a good dad when I was growing up. He did not drink and worked hard to support his family. My dad taught me everything I know about life and was always there for me. Thank you, Paul, for writing and recording this song. If I had to sum up a 52 year relationship in 4 minutes, it would be this song.
