Cat Stevens Father And Son Lyrics

Last updated: 11/11/2014 04:39:43 AM

It's not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

How can I try to explain, cause when I do it turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
if you want, you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them they know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Tears every time | Reviewer: Marc their dad | 3/7/14

I have tears every time I hear this song. It is so realistic or a parent and child relationship.

Yesterday a dad committed suicide because of depression. Last week a son almost died in a car accident because of bad decisions.

Sad. I just the words to my son in hopes he reads it and understands where I come from when i speak to him. I don't expect him to not feel what he is feeling. I only hope he understands what we feel. Love those SOB of our kids don't we.

Yusef Cat Stevens performed this song last night... | Reviewer: peter parisius | 2/19/14

... in "Festival di Sanremo", an Italian song contest, where he was the star guest. He is still a wonderful singer, his voice still gives us all shivers. After two other songs in which he was accompanied by the orchestra, he remained alone on the prestigious Sanremo stage and begun to stroke the strings of his acoustic guitar. People reckoned the song immediately, and since the verse "It's not time to make a change" it was an unique emotion for the audience, an emotion which culminated in a standing ovation after that he sung the last words of the lyrics, "I know that I have to go away... I know I have to go".
Thank you Cat Stevens for having come to Italy.

My son | Reviewer: paul | 2/1/14

Back in Dec I a little trouble with my son not knowing what he wanted in his life. I had a talk with him and let him listen to the song father and son. He listened to it three or four times. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said I guess I do have it all. I told him that he has more than alot of people his age (27).He has really changed and I'm so happy and proud to be his father. He is such a great father to my grandson and his wife also said he like he was when they first met. Thanks Cat for this great song. A happy father.

Great song | Reviewer: paul | 12/18/13

I'm getting up in years I have 2 great children my son is married and has a little boy my grandson and my life he has a great wife. And has everything you could want. But he just doesn't seem to be happy. I'm going to have a father and son talk and hope to find out what is wrong. I have listened to this song many times. I'm a big fan of Cat.I am going to play it for my son. Maybe it will help him to think about what he's got. My daughter is still at home and single but that's OKAY.Always Dad

What a great post on 4/22/13. I think your mothers love and wisdom was not wasted. I too have lived your words, and could not fully appreciate my mother until I became a father.

Live Well.

FATHER AND SON | Reviewer: JOOSE | 4/22/13

The words struck me like a brick. Red, my brother from another mother, made me listen to the song. He was fortunate to have had both his parents. Me, i was raised by a single mother, so i just was just far too brilliant for her small mind. These words held true until a nurse placed a beautiful little girl in my arms and i ceased being me and i forfeited it all just to be her dad. God would bless me with one more daughter and a son. I became a Dad and realized the wisdom and love my mother had given me and i had taken for granted. I will spend the rest of life trying to justify the love my mother gave me and the only way i can think to do this is by giving it to my children and grandchildren. Thank you Yusef.

I am an English teacher (but my mother tongue is Spanish) and I love this song!! I always make my students listen to it and we work with it, we analize it. It is absolutely wonderful. It was written in the 1970s but it is timelss... Just great... :)

my grandson | Reviewer: diane glover | 11/6/12

my precious grandson is keen to join the royal navy and the lyrics help me try and see how futile my opposition is.Timeless is the need to follow dreams and tread your own path ,its what each generation were meant to encourage.God bless and keep you safe Rhys.x

life phases | Reviewer: john | 6/26/12

I remember first hearing this song back when I was in my teens and how much I identified with the son. Since then I've raised 2 boys, both out and making their ways in the world and have 1 more left at home. I reflect on having been the dad and how true the words still ring from that standpoint as well. This song serves as a strong reminder of the mistakes I had to make growing older and hopefully wiser, and the room I had to give my boys to make their own.

Great song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/30/12

Beautiful song. I didn't understand it when I first listened to Cat when I was little but now as I listen to it once again, I begin to cherish this song.

beautiful melody, lyrics to think about every relation that we have in our life(dad, mom, sister, brother, friends etc.)and we have to try to be good person with every living creature on earth

Such a great song!I love it! | Reviewer: little girl | 10/10/11

I accidentally hear this song in Steve Jobs' Favorite Records. And i feel it, crying. I love my parents, especially my Dad,so much, and never wanna do anything to make them sad. We not talk to each other often, and sometimes i feel it's so difficult for me to tell them my trouble,or how i feel. But look at their eyes,i know that they always pray for me to be happy, and always follow every step of my life. Now,i am trying to find out what i really wanna do in my life,i gotta go my own way!Thank Cat for this song.

This song was written br Cat Stevens only. It was released on an album in1970. I am sure lee dewyze wasn't even born yet. Just bc a person puts a tattoo of a song on their arm or sings a song does not mean they wrote it.
